If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Beware dark chrome issues

Hey all,

I have been going through absolute hell trying to get my window trim pieces replaced under warranty and wanted to share my experience thus far in hopes that someone may be able to help.

I brought this to my dealer's (Genesis Santa Monica) attention way back in October 2021. At this time, my car was just over two years old and had just under 36,000 miles. The issue had been present for at least a year prior to that, but I just hadn't made the effort to get it fixed until then. The dealership said it would be no problem, they'd order the trim pieces and get them replaced under warranty. However, the parts were allegedly backordered, so it might be a bit.

Fast forward a few months, they finally have the pieces in. I set up an appointment and took my car in. Upon picking it up, I discovered that not only did they only have *one* of the pieces, that piece had arrived scratched. They said they'd order a new one. When I brought up that all of the pieces were supposed to be getting replaced, they seemed confused but said they'd order the parts. Again, we waited.

Finally, in April of this year, they told me the parts had all arrived. I set up another appointment and dropped my car off for the day. When I came back to pick it up, I inspected the trim pieces to make sure everything looked as it should. To my surprise, the warped look was very much still present, albeit a little bit less noticeable in some areas. I asked the dealership what in the world was going on and they told me that Genesis had denied the warranty claim and insisted that they polish the pieces with some special product. I, of course, am left wondering what the hell I've been waiting for for the last 6 months. I told the dealership this wasn't an acceptable solution as the problem is still very much there, and they essentially told me I'd have to take it up with Genesis themselves. So I did.

This is where the real problems begin. I got a case number later that week in April. Genesis eventually got in touch with me in May to set up an appointment for a body shop to look at the trim pieces to give them their opinion, which seemed unnecessary but was a hoop I was willing to jump through to get it done. I was traveling for a few weeks and finally took the car in on June 10. The body shop agreed that the trim pieces needed to be replaced and left a voicemail for the representative I'd been working with at Genesis. The body shop didn't hear back for about two weeks, so I followed up with Genesis and asked them what was going on. They claimed that they never got a voicemail, and I told them fine, but can you get this figured out ASAP? Call the body shop, email them, I don't care what you do but get it solved. Another week goes by and it's all radio silence from Genesis. Finally, on June 30 – about to enter month 9 of this ordeal – the body shop calls me to let me know that Genesis has finally gotten back to them. Initially, that seemed like great news – until the body shop told me that Genesis was insisting they polish the trim pieces with a special product. Which is exactly what had already been done at the dealership, which I told Genesis when I started this process with them, and which they are well aware does not work. I told them that that isn't an option and that I would get in touch with Genesis to figure out what the hell is going on.

I left a voicemail for the representative at Genesis on Tuesday and have yet to hear back.

I truly am baffled by the complete lack of customer service and timeliness to resolve something that will cost Genesis maaaaybe a few hundred bucks. It's not like I'm trying to have an engine replaced (though that would be even more pressing), it's a very simple warranty claim that should absolutely be covered without question or hesitation. And yet, 9 months later, I still have no solution and am left with window trim that looks like it's 20 years old.

At this point, I'm extremely frustrated and have been almost completely turned off from the brand as a whole, and this is coming from someone who has always been a huge Genesis advocate.

If anyone has gotten these pieces replaced under warranty and/or has any advice, I am all ears!

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I have had some real headaches as well, and I've had mine for less than a year.

I had my driver's side replaced by the dealer after they became milky and lost their color/shine. This was only after a month or so of owning the car so take that with a grain of salt. Now fast forward another few months, and my driver-side door trim was again "milky". I was told by my sales rep that Genesis has switched manufacturers due to this issue and they ordered new ones. Was that the truth? Who knows. That was 2 months ago and I still have not heard back. After reading this, I am going to shoot a text and see what the deal is.

But to answer your question, yes. I had mine replaced under warranty, but obviously not 2 years later. Probably more like keeping a new customer happy...

Glad to hear you were successful in getting them replaced! Still though, 2 (now 3) years later or not, this should easily be covered under the 5 year/60k miles bumper to bumper warranty. This is also my second Genesis and my father has had two as well, so you'd think they'd want to keep us happy 🤷🏼‍♂️

What a PITA. Some here have gotten the trim replaced with minimal hassle and some have had nothing but hassles. Genesis has to know and have data on overall warranty repairs across their vehicles so for them to flip flop on what they will cover is odd? I try to keep my trim clean and water spot free as much as I can. Have some spots but not really bad yet.

Appreciate your post. I’m having the same exact issue with my GV70 trim at exactly 1 yr old. Curious to know if the “new” trim has discolored again? Going to take it to the dealer next week to see what they say. From these threads, their response seems inconsistent? Hoping they’ll stand by their $65k car just 1 year after purchase. 🙏🏻

My new 2023 G70 has some discoloration areas on the dark chrome around the windows, especially on the larger surfaces at the very rear side windows. And the grille has some stains as well. Any ideas what to use to remove them? Regular wax or polish? Just curious. Rubbing with a microfiber rag sprayed with water doesn't work. Thank you.

Not sure you can really remove it? Some claim to have used a polish but it’s fairly easy to remove the dark coating if not really careful. Then you end up with just more splotchyness. Any time my car gets wet I just try to dry all the dark chrome pieces as quickly as possible which has helped. In a few months my G70 is coming up on 3 years and the chrome spots are starting to get more noticeable. Not sure what kind of battle it will be for a warranty claim or if dealers have to remove door panels to gain access to remove trim? Don’t really want a dealer monkeying with my car at all.

Yeah, probably not worth trying to use anything abrasive on it. It's not bad, so will just live with it. I told dealer not to wash my car, but I think they started, and aborted it, since I found hard water spots everywhere. I wouldn't want anybody messing with that trim either, so will just take care of it like you said. Unfortunately, when I went to wash the car, the stupid spot-free rinse was not working, and it was 100F outside, so had to deal with removing hard water spots everywhere. Need to wax the car now, which is good idea anyway. Just didn't want to do it now, since it gets even hotter inside the garage. Might wait a month or two.

Same exact problem. Worst part is that I have a matte green GV70 and that paint does not need any waxes or polishes anywhere near it. I'm at a loss.

Tape it off. I did it with my 22 g70 launch edition and took the dark tint off of the chrome. It took some time and effort but it can be done.

Why not just wrap it?

Didn't feel like I should have to wrap a portion of a brand new vehicle.
Couldn't agree with you more. There is no solution from GMA. You either have to be really careful and tape the area off/clean it up, wrap it, or bite your tongue and deal with it. I've had two different Genesis models, and both did it.

And which did you do? :D

My 2020 G70 had the trim replaced twice and now the front pieces are getting fine.

Only have 16,900 miles and I barely drive it but it just has never been fixed and likely never will but they keep producing it.

Morons. Just change it already.

My 2022 G70 Matte Gray with dark chrome has the same issue, 9.600 miles. Took it to the dealer and they are submitting it as warranty and would let me know when the parts will be in.

I had my 22 G70 wrapped and my 22 GV70 wrapped. Looks great. Don't regret it for a second. Less chrome and no peeling/fading issues.
How long have the trim pieces been wrapped? I looked into it but was talked out of it by a local company that does wrapping. I was told that it wouldn't hold up for very long before the wrap started having issues. Could have just been his opinion/experience.

GMA will definitely replace, but it will just happen again. Sad but true experience for most of us.

I've had mine wrapped going on 6 months. I would venture to say he didn't know what he was doing or it was a smaller job and didn't want to deal. I'm in Florida and I see cars everyday that are wrapped aka chrome delete. It's a very common thing to do these days. Keep shopping around. The first two I called didn't want to do it because they mostly do full car wraps. Someone there will do it I'm sure. It's well worth it.
