Hard shift in 2017 G80

I am experiencing a hard shift in my transmission. Have documentation of at least two times the tech witness the hard shift during test drive and they reset something called a transmission adapter valve which now the hard shift is more frequent. They reset the adapter 5 times. Genesis is not taking this issue seriously which is so disappointing. Has anyone had this issue?
We have it not only in the 17 but also in the 12. We thought they would have fixed it in the newer models the reason we bought a 17. Now we’re having random power loss when we turn the car off. We have to manually open the trunk mess with the battery power comet back but it constantly does this and hard shifting. The dealer doesn’t get a code and sometimes it won’t hard shift when they test drive it. We are at a loss about it

My 2015 5.0 is having this issue. It’s very intermittent and of course never happens when Hyundai tech is test driving it. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Sorry to hear that. I specified the problem, demonstrated it to them with a mechanic on the passenger's seat (of course, did not happen, so I managed to replicate the problem using manual gear shifting), and they were still skeptical of it, so I left the car overnight.

That overnight turned out to be 4 months. They provided a renter for one week during the 16+ weeks.

My car is now fine, but my confidence in Hyundai / Genesis service has eroded quite a bit.

The dealership shouldn’t have a problem with the replacement claim if your car is still under warranty. You can go to post # 17 on this thread and download the technical service bulletin. The dealership should have it but just in case it might be a good idea to print it and take it to them
Thanks for your advice. It got fixed. And it only took 4 months. Very poor service from the dealership I got my car.

Yes, my 2017 G80 was doing the same thing. 2nd owner, 37500 miles, awd. Conicelli Genesis is replacing the transmission. Located in norristown pa. No questions asked. They have replaced several 17 G80’s transmissions. Apparently replacement fixes the problem. Hope this helps. Mike
Hello Mike!

Do you still have your '17 G80? I live in the area and i am planning a trip to that exact dealership for service. My car started the hard shifting off and on a few weeks ago once it made 35k miles. I kind of want to get ahead of this problem as i see it is very common. How was your service at the dealership? I hope I have no issues getting this resolved as well. We literally have the same exact situation. 2nd owner and all! -- How long did it take to get a new trans through warranty? I hate that we have to deal with this.

Check this out. Hyundai Genesis released a TSB to fix the transmission harsh shift issues, it also applies to 2017 and up models.

Thank you,
Husam

And here is the TSB issued by Genesis for the harsh shift. It's a new TSB as of late year 2021.

I'm having hard shifts/surging as well. The dealer has not been able to pull any codes and with my luck the care doesn't show symptoms at the dealership. Most of hard shifts are 2nd to 3rd; 3rd to 4th, and 4th to 5th. It happens at different speeds when the car is warm and the car is in normal mode. I can go for days with no issues and out the blue the car becomes possessed. 5.0 by the way.
I also have this problem. When it is warmed up. 2-3rd is violent & 4-5th is also a jerk. Mine will also slip from 2-3rd. Occasionally it will slam as it is upshifting as I slow. Doesn’t matter which mode I’m in.

I have experienced hard shifting in my tranny 2017 G80 3.8 . It usually occurs between first and second gear .Unfortunately the dealer has no solution for this problem. A transmission fluid flush didn’t help . Completely frustrating.

No patch or reprogramming they can do? I used to have issues like that on my Infiniti G37 and transmission software updates fixed it.

I'll add my experience to the list. I have a 2017 Genesis G80 3.8 HTRAC ultimate package, 90k miles. I bought it with about 38k miles and started getting the hard shift between 1 and 2, and between 2 and 3 at roughly 70,000. It will stick in first gear and then RPMs will rev up to over 3,000 and then 'jolt' into second gear. Obviously this all happened beyond the 5yr/60k mile warranty threshold.

The hard shift is constant, but it does get better or worse seemingly by how warm it is, or how much driving I have been doing. I find that its worse in seattle, where things are hilly (?). Took to our hyundai dealer (no genesis dealer around) and they could replicate, paid $200 for a diagnosis that "I need a new transmission." It didn't seem like the technicians knew anything about this discussion we're having. As far as getting it fixed outside of warranty, as many have noted, very few people will touch these transmissions. I couldn't get a transmission shop like AAMCO to give me a quote for less than $10k. Dealership said OEM transmission is $8k and thats w/o labor. I still owe $9k on vehicle at this point. I contacted Genesis just to complain and beg for warranty coverage but to no avail. So, I rolled the dice... I bought a used transmission which had 30k miles on the exact same totaled model of Genesis, and had it put in by a local mechanic . Honestly I lucked out just to find someone. $850 for transmission part, $1250 for labor and fluids. I'll be all in about $2250 after taxes. I'm told it fixed the issue in the test drive. I go to pick up the car tomorrow AM. Definitely one of the more maddening experiences I've ever had with a car. The problem would subside for awhile and I'd get to thinking there was nothing to do, then "Wham!" the jerking between lower gears would start up again! Good luck!

Yes and it is fine when cold around 40 degrees

So this hasn’t happened in my car for the last week or two…yesterday was so warm out, first tk second was hitting so hard. The worst is when I was attempting to park, the car wouldn’t engage Reverse and started to roll. But when it engaged it slammed hard, hopefully this keeps up and I can get a solution at the dealer, (I’ve been waiting for it to show back up)

Exactly, sorry for your issues but thank God someone else is having the same problem. What have you done so far with your issues; been to the shop or reported to Genesis?

It appears that I'm experiencing the same exact issues with my G80, 2017 and the dealership is not finding any error codes. I will be bringing in again to continue the recording of events and results to substantiate the problem being covered under warranty.

46313-4E702 & 46313-4E602 are the part numbers for the two transmission shift solenoids that you most likely need to replace. Please double check fitment for your car model. Refer to the TSB in my post above and show it to the dealer.

Yes. My 2017 Genesis G80 transmission is shifting roughly over a year now. Can't get the delear/service department to take it seriously. For giggles, I tried changing my fuel to high end 91 octane and kept using the same fuels station. It has some impact (sporadically) however it does not remedy the shifting issue.

Hey Genny Runners (hoping that's a thing...) - anywho....my '17 AWD has been experiencing the harsh 2nd-3rd & 4th-5th shifts more lately. Just over 65K miles, having hard time finding that sweet spot in the revs to go between the gears above, and at times, jerking rather forcefully into them once 'found'. Was hoping it was just a fluke of the range not meshing right, but after glancing at some of the threads here, realized it's more common (not a great thing...) than I'd like to hear about. Bought mine w/~ 48K miles almost 2.5 yrs ago, never an issue until recently. Progressively worse as the car warms up. Saw something about replacing a solenoid (or 2) related specifically to the shift points in those gear changes, but when I dug deeper, determined that a recall was provided, yet only for prior to the '17 model. I have it at a local dealer now (Ricart, Columbus, OH), and thankfully, at point of purchase, I added an extended warranty for an add'l 70K miles, so I'd hope that any related costs to repairing/replacing would be covered. Feedback from dealer is to have it replaced (by either a remanufactured or new)...likely weeks out. Good thing they've loaned me a '23 G70 Sport Prestige....been having some fun w/that one. Any viable feedback/support from the group here is greatly appreciated!

Same issues. I own a 2017 G80 that started to experience the hard shifting (jolt- like) just after my warranty expired at 60,000 miles. I bought it used with 40,000 miles on it and it drove great for 20k of those. I don’t have a genesis dealer in the immediate vicinity. I took it to the Hyundai dealership where I originally bought it, and they just told me my transmission was “bad” and there was nothing they could do. Quoted me $11k or something. I did quite a bit of research including on this thread, but there were very few mechanics that were willing to take on the work. I ended up hiring a guy to completely replace my transmission with one out of a totaled 2017 G80. So far so good. No issues.

Wow. Was at an appointment "today" with the local Hyundai dealership (There were a Genesis dealer for about 2 years then fell back under Hyundai). They literally told me I needed a new transmission however I have been bringing up this issue for over a year now. I will work with a local transmission technician and leave the Dealer out of this since the warranty has lapsed.

Timing...I just found this online for the 2017 Genesis G80. It specifically states "This TSB provides a procedure to replace the solenoids listed below for slipping, shift flare and/or harsh shift during the 2-3, 3-4 or 4-5 upshift. Drive the vehicle with the ATF at normal operating temperature (158-212F) (70-100C). If the vehicle has a shift flare and/or harsh 2-3, 3-4 or 4-5 upshift, follow the procedure below.". 21-AT-010HG Genesis Technical Service Bulletin
