The Battery Died in my Genesis GV80

Why would starting your car twice in a week, when your on vacation a few time a year if your car is sitting idle in a parking lot ruin your engine? If I was home, I would start it a lot more often that that?
Iam old, so is there something I am missing?

For a spec race car, maybe, for any normal car, no.

Anytime you cold start your engine, you are subjecting it to a considerably higher level of wear and tear. There is little-to-no oil at the top of the engine once it's sat for a while.

This isn't a debate, it's merely a fact.

Obviously, we all have to cold start our vehicles on a regular basis, but the last thing you want to do is cold start it, and then leave it idle and then subsequently shut it off.

The ideal way to cold start an engine is to start it and then immediately drive it so that the oil can begin circulating as quickly as possible. The oil will also come up to operating temp substantially faster when driving vs. idling.

I found that when you click "see all" on the owner's portal under vehicle status, you can see the battery level. I can't find any official way to see that data in the car unless there is a hidden engineering mode.

That is the only way to see it. Also, it does not show this in the mobile app. Go figure.

I was down for a month and was unable to drive the car. Figured it would be near dead and it was. I put it in the tender to bring the battery to full. Two more times in quick succession if found it near dead with only days passing of it not moving. I'm surprised the car doesn't seem to have a feature most cars have had for nearly two decades when the car shuts down 99% of it's electronics to allow one more start. If it has it, it's not working. The only item I've left connected is my android auto wireless adapter but from what I understand all the USB ports turn off when the canbus goes to sleep. What gives? Maybe just a bum battery? Does anyone know if the factory battery is led acid or AGM? My tender can recondition lead acid batteries. Thanks in advance.

I only went 12 hours without driving and my GV80 and it was totally dead. I have talked to service person today, he said it is either a bad cell in my battery or an electric leak that drained it. But, they can’t look at my car until Oct 10th and this is August 22nd. My car is 3 levels underground, can’t wait to see how they get it out. Will let the professional jump it!

Yes, there is something definitely going on with your vehicle. Mine tends to show lower voltage, but I do have a dash cam (front and rear with parking monitor) installed, so I can expect this. Almost every time I start the vehicle after it has set for a day, I get the alert that something is draining my battery, but it has never gone dead. I expect the message, so no big deal. I fully charged my battery after I got it and it still drains down to around 75 - 85%.

I only went 12 hours without driving and my GV80 and it was totally dead. I have talked to service person today, he said it is either a bad cell in my battery or an electric leak that drained it. But, they can’t look at my car until Oct 10th and this is August 22nd. My car is 3 levels underground, can’t wait to see how they get it out. Will let the professional jump it!

I'd ask them to replace the battery ASAP. It's highly unlikely that it's anything but a defective battery.

If the dealer won't help you should absolutely escalate this to Genesis directly.

Just get a CTEK branded battery tender. They have a really nice one for AGM batteries.

For those who park for long period of time, please don't start the car periodically to charge the battery. You're causing considerable wear and tear on your engine. A new battery is far cheaper than a new engine.

dfad - your battery should be perfectly fine for 2 weeks. If you're really worried about it, you could disconnect the negative battery terminal while it sits parked, but you're going to lose vehicle settings of course.

LOL. I was one of them. I showed you how to use the key fob to back the car up and then move it back. My GV80 was getting a dash cam installed.

I got one at Walmart. Works great. Allows you to add pig tails to your battery so you can just plug it in.

I have left my car for 9 days without issue. But, I wonder if using the remote start and letting the car idle for 1/2 hour is your away once a week will help keep the battery charged?

in the past you had to be higher rpm than to spin the alternator. So no, Idling wouldn't do it "in the past". Might have changed. ??

I use "Batteryminder" battery maintainers on limited use cars. There are specific models for AGM batteries (I use the 2012 AGM model). They are fully automatic (no buttons), so it's just plug it in. They're not very expensive, I've used them for years with no issues. Haven't used them on my GV80 so I'm not sure where to connect it but I have then hard wired on other cars, all I do is plug it in and that's it, easy peasy.

I haven't looked much at these as I'm still using a really old CTEK charger that is branded as "Porsche" - it's technically not even the right one for an AGM battery (even tho my 911 does have an AGM), but it has worked fine for many years. The downside to this specific charger is it only has a cigarette lighter plug, so it doesn't work on the GV80 (I tried, the cigarette ports on the GV80 don't allow trickle charging).

If I were buying one today, I think this is what I'd get:

I also plan to try my off-brand battery tender that I purchased from Amazon to see if it works well with the GV80. There are quite a few time periods in the summer where the GV80 sits for 1-2+ weeks at a time as it's mostly only used as a highway/spare vehicle in the summer months.

I got fed up last night when it died on me while running errands near the dealership. I took it over there and dumped it on them. I'm tired of it. I expect they will already kick it back because they tested the battery and said, "it's good, but it just needs to be charged." I ALREADY CHARGED IT TWICE for 24 hours. And the kicker of, oh we don't have any loaner cars for you. In two years, with a nearly $80,000 car, I have NEVER been able to secure a loaner car. Give me anything!

Well, they tested again this morning and magically it's bad today when they said it wasn't yesterday. The replacement has been ordered for Friday. Still no offer of a loaner car.

That is beyond frustrating. It's going to be the after-sales experience of this brand that prevents me from buying another one.

I hope they get your battery situation squared away ASAP.
