If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Trunk release switch rubber cover

A few members here have had items in the rear of the car quit due to broken wires at the trunk hinge arms. Thread above deals with it.
Thank you!!!

look at this thread about the wiring harness. If the trunk switch is connected by a wire in this harness there is a good chance its a frayed wire. If your car is under warranty I would take it to the dealer. Otherwise an independent auto electric can fix it.
Thanks!!!

take pics. This looks to be a common fix to these spectacular sedans.

I don’t think I HAD to take it to this extent but I didn’t want to leave any stone unturned. FYI you will break 50% of all the clips. Then I got called into work. Will finish investigating and upload more pics when I get back home.

junk like this covering needs no charge replacement from hyundai, with normal use of this part it should last at least 9 years if not longer. it is in the details.

You should relocate the wire harness so the issue will not happen again if you fixed the wires already. The wires harness is on a bracket that is too close to the hinge which puts too much stress on the wiring harness when the trunk opens and closes. The wires break over time and disable the inner taillight usually, however other wires are in the harness as well so something else can be affected also.

The solution is to remove the wire harness support tab from the metal bracket(remove metal bracket as well) and place the tab in the oval shaped hole in the chassis a bit lower than where the metal bracket was located. The location gives the wire harness more slack to prevent the wires from being overly stressed when the trunk moves.

I had the same issue recently. Here is my fix.

Yeah I already fixed mine. But I wasn’t going to go through all of that again in the future so I went ahead and spliced and added wire to every single wire at the weak point. About 8 inches in length and a little thicker I think it was 18 gauge. It has pretty much the same set up on the driver side but I didn’t mess with that side. I’ll just keep my fingers crossed for that side.

Have 2016 Genesis with basically disintegrated rubber over exterior trunk access lever. Went to dealer and first told me $220, then called me back and said I have to replace entire assembly. For that they want: $720. Local dealer here in SC needs a new yacht or something.

I ordered new one from S Korea, $20.

Just buy the SC dealer their new yacht and fix the wires yourself.

My rubber cover finally disintegrated and the whole switch is exposed. So do I have to tear the whole trunk lid apart to replace this stupid piece of rubber or do I just let it be ?

I would expect the switch to fail eventually now that it is exposed to the elements.
Getting to it is not too difficult. There's a screw/bolt to remove from the triangle holder, and several plastic pins to remove to get the cover off the inside of the trunk lid, and then you should be able to replace the switch assembly.

You would think!!! But if it’s anything like replacing the license plate lights, that area is NOT accessible by removing the inner black fabric cover. You have to remove the exterior plastic back cover that sits on the sheet metal of the trunk lid. In other words, what your rear license plate attaches to. And if that’s the case, you’d probably rather just leave it as is. By far the DUMBEST DESIGN EVER CREATED. Good luck 😅

The trunk switch assembly can be replaced without removing that back cover, but removing the clips is tricky. The new part comes with new clips. Remove and reinstall the camera. Diys are posted here.

After reading these posts about the manual release for the trunk located in the trunk lid I checked our 2015 Genesis 3.8 and sure enough it was rotted away. The warranty was expired so I ordered one from Ebay for about $40 with free shipping. On arrival I found the unit is press fitted into the opening of the trunk lid. It has tension springs around the edges that hold it in place. There is a switch for the trunk release with one connector and the backup camera is mounted with 4 small screws. Its a simple changeout once you see the new unit and dislodge the old one. You do need to be careful due to the camera changeout. Its a easy way to save yourself some bucks if your Genesis is out of warranty. I should have taken some pictures of the new one and the install but did not.
Could you please send me the link so I can buy from Ebay, Thank you for the post
