  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GV70 2.5 rear end noise

I'm starting to take offense to you calling it a truck lol. I don't think it's quite big enough to not be a "car", though I guess it's not much smaller than an old Blazer, which is definitely a truck. Definitely the wrong shape to be a truck though lol.
Yeah, it isn't a truck. ;)

I call it a car because it's closer to a car than a truck. It's built on a car chassis. And SUV is 3 syllables so we are way too lazy to call it that!

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

Drove with the tech Friday and I’m happy to say he didn’t try to discount my issue or say that it’s normal. He called Genesis this morning and was told to replace the differential again. Part expected first of the year. I’m hoping to give the G80 loaner back tomorrow and drive mine until the part comes in. Sure miss my ride!

You should ask if they're using the "new part" with a different part number. These shouldn't reoccur if they really fixed it. I've put about 3,000 KM on the new rear diff and haven't had any problems.

I do notice just a bit of a lower-frequency "noise" when I'm coasting though - kind of opposite the rear diff issue. It's very subtle and not annoying in any way but I did correlate it with every time the dash shows it's in "coasting" mode. Hopefully that doesn't become a thing!

About a month after the diagnosis of rear differential, the part has arrived. I'm due in to have it replaced next week. Hopefully it will go well and solve the problem. Will let you know how it goes. In GTA, Canada.

Finally was able to bring mine in. They confirmed the issue and ordered the rear differential. My VIN also came up with a recall for the torque converter so they ordered that too.

Besides the rear diff hum when feathering the gas at 50-60mph mine also has kind of a deep pulsating noise when I let off the brakes and it moves from idle. It came independent from the rear diff issue, but dealer says they don’t hear anything out of the ordinary. It’s not always so obvious of an issue, but nonetheless they said it could be related to the torque recall and said to wait and see if it helps. Not very thrilled that they have to remove the trans to get at the torque converter.

They claim two weeks wait for the parts. Not holding my breathe.

So…..last month my Silver 2.5l GV70 went in for an oil change and while it was in I asked them to diagnose the rear end noise that I could hear. It was subtle but there so I thought I had the dreaded differential issue. Sure enough I did. The technicians advised against continuing to drive the vehicle so I was given a rental. It took some time to get the parts delivered so I had the rental for almost a month but I got my GV70 back today and all seems ok.

All in all fairly good customer service. They were communicative and forthcoming when there were delays.

Got the rear differential replaced yesterday. Took about the whole day to get done. They loaned me an almost new G70 3.3T for the day which was quite nice to drive! Very fast and hugs the road. Driving home with the repaired vehicle showed no issues and no noise at the reported speeds. Hopefully, it is permanent fix and will hold. Service was as planned and scheduled. Customer rep was courteous and professional. All good!

update, I started this thread last July, and our third diff replacement has now had 4k miles put on it with zero issues or noise. So I am confidant the last replacement has fixed the issue of the original and the second replacement diff.

Excellent! I think at first they just tried different diffs to see if it would work without knowing what was causing it. Then they finally figured it out and came up with a new part #. With that part, it seems to work.

I have about 5,000 KM on the new one with no issues.

UPDATE: so after 3k with new diff - it starts showing same whining noise, same exact symptoms. I assume I got old part replacement, which unfortunately doesn’t hold up. Will be reporting this to my dealer, hopefully getting new part.
Does anyone know new diff part number I can refer to?

at least you got some use out of it, our first replacement didnt last 5 miles

No, I was never told what the new part number was...just that it was different from the "old" one.

Figured I'd lend my experience to this thread.

Bought my 2.5 Sport Prestige back in July of '22. Noticed the dreaded differential whine between about 45-60MPH almost immediately, and informed the dealer (Elhart Hyundai in Holland, MI) to have them diagnose the issue when the vehicle was in for it's first oil change/service. The Tech. noted that the rear differential was noticeable dry, and had almost no diff fluid in the assembly. They ordered the parts needed and after about three to four weeks of waiting service the vehicle and replaced the rear differential assembly, and checked fluid levels and topped off with diff fluid.

Since I haven't noticed the return of the differential whine yet... I'm hopefully they were able to resolve on the first go-around but it's definitely an issue dealerships are aware of, thus Genesis should be as well.

I will dig it up and check.
Following as my GV70 MY 22 has been at the shop for >1 month getting the differential replaced. Were you able to find the updated part number for the differential assembly?

Had my pinion changed out and, knock on wood, the noise is gone. Took a while to get an appointment when a loaner was available and my vehicle sat outside for 12 days before getting on the lift. From there, I picked it up at the end of that day.
I did have a G70 3.5 Sport as the loaner and I'm glad I bought the GV instead. Felt like a cheap ride but I like that it did not have the auto on/off feature I turn off every time I get in my GV. But... that G70 was QUICK! Surprised how much quicker than my GV.
