  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Proximity Card Key?

The key card for the 2022's, and presumably the 2021's, apparently is not the same thing as the "proximity card". It's just a credit card. No physical key, no battery. It looks exactly like a credit card. Exactly the same size and thickness as a Visa card, for instance.
Correct. These are two completely different things, NFC card (new cars), and proximity card (prior cars).
I wonder if the proximity card will work with the new cars? Possibly not.

It would be nice if they did. I normally don't need the buttons on the fob. I just have to remember to put it in my pocket before I go out to the car. I know, big inconvenience, right? :)

Wow. That sounds like a lot. Instead of the card.. Can't you use the NFC on your phone too do all that? Seems like now you have the card, the phone, and the fob.

By the way, just to add more confusion to the situation :) for 2021 / 2022, there is a Digital Key App. It's Android only, but it uses NFC to unlock and start the car. You open the app, and then you can tap the door handle with the phone to unlock, and place your phone in the charger to start. Then, there are also buttons - lock, unlock, panic on, panic off, remote engine on, remote engine off, trunk, and remote smart parking assist - that operate over bluetooth. Haven't played with it much, because it's more convenient to grab the fob and put it into my pocket, then when I get to the car, just grab the handle and open the door, then get in and just start the car. The fob doesn't ever come out of my pocket while I'm out. With the app, I have to pull out my phone and start the app. I do need to play with the app more, though. Maybe I could start the app when I turn my phone on and just have it running all the time.

I have the "Old card" and use the app on Android too start The car. Create a "short cut" on the home screen. And use that. No need to swipe into the app drawer, scroll to app, then tap buttons.

Using the MFC Card, once I start car, I place it on my Brest pocket, so that I won’t forget it in the car when I shut car off. Yes, car will continue running with NFC Card in my shirt pocket.

I now MOSTLY use the NFC Card. Very seldom use the Fob anymore.
I like it because thieves can’t hack it like they can hack the FOB.
(I could be wrong).

Funny you should say that.. For Christmas my daughter bought me a "RFID blocking" wallet. It has a liner in it to keep thieves from cloning my credit cards. The liner worked because my car would no longer pick up my key card and my badge reader at work wouldn't pick up my badge. I eventually had to cut the liner out of the wallet, now car picks up card again. It's a Levi wallet.. Really nice.

The key FOB is not hackable per se. The attack is on the interception (man-in-the-middle attack, ) of the radio signal from the FOB to the car. The NFC card is susceptible to the same attack.

So I can use the digital key app with my 2018 G80 Sport and Android phone?

No, you can't. Many are still confusing the key card from the newer cars with the proximity card for the older cars. You can get a proximity card for your 2018. The key app and newer card are not supported on your car.

Thank you so much for the clarity.
