Winter tires/rims

My question is.. do I buy just tires and put onto existing rims?
I have been wanting larger wheels for my vehicle anyways in summer.. the 19 Michelin Primacy on them now leaves a big gap between the wheel well and I don't like the esthetics. But that may be out of my budget for now.

Just as a note, the 21" OEM wheels still leave a lot of space in the wheel wells, which I, too, don't find particularly good looking. But, until Hyundai offers a souped-up GV70 GTS model (or whatever they call it) with height-adjustable air suspension, that's just the way it is.

Seconding what others have said, if you are going to the expense of swapping out the Primacies, you really want to buy 3-peak logoed snow tires. The 3-peak rating is meaningful, the A/S logo is no guarantee of a real winter tire.

In Ontario here and I have always had two sets of tires and wheels. I put Continental Viking Contact 7 on my stock 19", and sold my Michelin Primacys. The Vikings are awesome winter tires. Put them on my son's car as well. Then bought an aftermarket set of 21" wheels and tires for summer.

I tend to buy all my tires from Blackcircles.ca when they have sales of up to 12% and soon, manufacturers will start offering rebates on purchase of 4 tires.

Do you want one set of wheels and tires all year round? If so, then you have some choices of all weather tires that serve like an all season tire, except all weather have the 3 peak mountain symbol that will allow you to drive in winter. Michelin cross climate comes to mind as a leading all weather tire. My son moved 5o Vancouver last fall and drove there with his Vikings, and when his Viking Contacts are done, he will be going with Michelin cross climate so he can head to slopes in winter. He has an apartment so no room for 2nd set of wheels.

Or, you do like I did, get winters for your stock 19" wheels, sell your Primacys, and then look for summer set in Feb March.

I don't like the idea of having two sets of tires and one set of wheels. Taking off and putting on twice a year could damage the tire bead over time.

I’m with you luck11. Ditchin‘ the Primacy’s @ 800 miles, even though wasteful, from purely a driving pleasure stand point, is IMHO, a required first mod for all North American GV70’s! And do it sooner than later. ;-)

I like the look of the stock 21", but like you, not a fan of the offset, which is +43. My aftermarket are custom offset of +32, 21x9 and the fronts tires are flush, although I went with slightly wider 265 series tire. Back has a bit of room for flush, but not a fan of my fronts poking out to do so, and not doing staggered set up. The other option is get a set of quality hub centric bolt wheel spacers, 10mm would work, 15 mm would likely result in poke.

I got a great deal on Michelin X-Ice tires from Costco for the 19" wheels...about $1,000 for all 4! They were on sale but you should still be able to find some for around $1,200. Blizzaks and X-Ice are my go-to tires as they are readily available and well priced.

Nice day here in Toronto so I gave the fleet a wash with the winter boots on. Fast FC04A - 20x8.5 ET 35 on Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV - 255/45/20.

Zeus69, you win your bet! Discount Tire swapped out the sensors in about 40 minutes and, what do you know, they paired after 10 miles of driving. Next week I am taking it on its first real road trip and the extra peace of mind in having working TPMS sensors is worth a lot to me.

So, the lessons here are:

(1) Don't give up, technical problems usually have technical solutions;
(2) If you ordered TPMS tires from Tire Rack and they don't pair with your Genesis,
ping customer service and ask them for a swap to the correct sensors (Schrader 29109);
(3) If you are ordering a new set of tires (from any vendor) be sure to specify Schrader 29109.

Also just got the Schrader 29109 TPMS installed with my winter set. They worked right away. No issues.

In a couple of weeks I'll be getting my Advanced Plus delivered with the 21'' all weather tires. The dealer offered the Continental VikingContact 7 235/60R18 as the winter option. Since its coming from the dealer, I presume its the right choice. Or is it?

Going through this thread, I'm a bit confused about them being the right fit.

I already have a set of Blizzak DM V2 with the same specs. I am thinking of getting the Genesis branded wheels and use these. Is that a viable option? Should I let the aftermarket shop handle any fitting issues with the brake calipers, lock nut etc. or get it done at the dealership?

The 21" come with all weather or all season? Big difference. Depending where you are, and how much you drive and where, you may not need winter tires if they are in fact all weather tires. You can put a few coats of ceramic spray wax on the wheels and they will be fine in the winter.

In terms of winter tires, I have the Viking Contact 7s and they are fantastic winter tires. But if you have the Blizzaks and still good, no point in getting new tires...just get wheels. If they are saying 18" will fit, I presume they know what they are talking about. Key is offset and design of spokes to ensure you do not contact the brake calipers. A good aftermarket wheel shop can easily advise, and would likely do a test fit of the wheels. Not sure what Genesis wheels cost, but you may want to cost compare. FAST wheels carries some nice aftermarket Flow Formed wheels, which gives them more strength than cast wheels. Forged is best...light and strong.

I am 99% sure they are all season..likely the Michelin Primacy.

Probably makes sense to get winters for GTA even though u get less snow than here in Ottawa.

Smaller wheels means you need a taller tire sidewall to maintain overall diameter of the tire. Taller sidewall generally means more cushy and comfortable ride. I think 18 is too small from an aesthetics perspective, but that is a personal thing. You can look at tiresize.com, and use their compare tool to put in two tire sizes and it will provide all the differences and impact on speed etc.

Last thing, only mentioned Fast as one option. There are many more and you can do a search for compatible wheels online by plugging in car make model etc. kxwheels, wheelwiz, canadawheels etc. For winter, suggest a painted wheel and often, wheels will be designated "winter appropriate". Try to keep offset under +38.

Note that you may require hub centric rings (usually 20 bucks or so) with some aftermarket wheels since the centre hub hole is often larger than the Genesis 67.1 mm to accommodate many makes and model vehicles.

Agreed...18" don't look great. The 19s (which I have) are a good balance of looks and comfort. The 20s might look a bit better yet but you have less rubber between you and the road - and tires/wheels cost a bit more.

I got a set of wheels from Wheelwiz for summer and use the stocks for winter. Keep in mind some after-market wheels are not designed for use in the winter.

I do have the 3.5 Sport Plus that comes with the 21" rims and I also got the winter tire package from the dealer and they are 18" rims on Continental Viking Contact 7 tires. I was skeptical of the 18 when buying it from them but they aren't an issue. The lower package of the vehicle when they were released came with 18" rims so I can assure you that they will fit especially if you bought them from the dealership.

Actually Costco didn’t fill air in the tires properly, it was less than what even what is required for 19. So when I filled later it didn’t help. What I had to do was to keep air to what is recommended for 21 and once I did that it rectified the issue. Now it is slightly less it is not complaining. In short the trick is to fill to what door jamb says and then can release some air later to what is recommended for 19.
