  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Tilt Telescopic Steering Wheel

Getting back to the title of the thread the steering column was replaced today and everything seems to be working fine. Since some have said only the motor needs to be replaced let me re-iterate that in my case the whole column was removed and replaced totally under warranty.

I am glad they got you taken care of as I know you have been waiting a few weeks for the repair.

My dealer ordered the limit switch only. It took 9 weeks to arrive, and will be installed Thursday. I hope this fixes my issue with limited motion on both the tilt and telescoping axis. I would hate to have to wait another extended amount of time to get this repaired.

As for the wheel correcting itself, mine goes in random cycles. It will be fine for a couple of days, then gradually decreases in motion until the wheel is fully extended, and all the way down to the point I have to lower the seat to exit. The mechanic is able to correct this, but it only lasts temporarily.

Is there any easy way to correct the lack of movement, if only temporarily? That would help a little for me I think while waiting for the repair.

On mine there are 2 choices, wait for it to correct itself, or take it back to the dealer. The dealer can fix it in less than 10 minutes.

Mine was doing exactly the same thing. The repair has been working great - so far. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

jgriffter - My experience was like vega's. If it was in a bad position, I would have to wait for the days when it decided it wanted to move to get it back where I wanted it. Once you've got the steering where you want it, until you get it repaired, I recommend turning off all the things that make the steering automatically go in/out/up/down...and don't touch the memory buttons.

The switch was replaced this morning, and all seems well. I have cycled the system 10 times and the wheel is still working as it should .........

As previously posted repaired on Tuesday; lasted 1 1/2 days and lack of tilt range is back.

Got in car last night and memory seat positions were gone and somehow got reset as close as possible to dashboard. Re-adjusted and re-set and noticed that tilt range is back to being limited and tach and speedo view blocked. Car going back in next week, dealer doesn't know what to do (my opinion).

You may want to have them to research the tilt column motor reinstall,Job # 07HYZ102. It is not unusual for the memory function to loose your settings. I think it is strange that when you look at the TSB there is a diagrahm of the repair replacing the two limit switches but no diagrahm of the steering column replacement or column tilt motor reinstal. Is it possible that there is a problem with the new steering column? One thing I did was after the tilt steering repair I disabled both the steering and seat easy exit options as I really do not need the use of these feature and thought may be I could save on unnecessary ware and ward off any future problems.Good luck and I hope you will post back with the results of the repair.

What I wonder is if they are just installing a new tilt/telescope switch that came from the same old vendor.

I'd have assumed that if Hyundai issued a TSB for the switch, they also would have either redesigned the switch, or found a new vendor with better quality assurance standards.

If they are just installing a new switch from the same old vendor, then it doesn't surprise me that some folks are seeing a recurrance of this problem. If, for example, the old tilt/telescope switch had a 1% failure rate, and Hyundai is just replacing it with the same old switch, then you've got a 1-in-100 chance that your new switch will be bad too.

The part number noted on my invoice is "56390-3M000-FFF TILT/TELE-LIMIT SWIT". I'm not sure what the part number of the original switch was.

In my experience with military aircraft maintenance, when a re-designed part is used to replace a defective one, it normally gets a new part number...or an "A" or "-1" suffix, or something along those lines. They don't use the same part number as the old, defective part because of the probability that one of the old, defective parts will be in the supply system.

Any word on your tilt ?

Car goes in again next Thursday due to my schedule not a delay with the dealer. Golf is far more important that a tilt steering wheel. Will let everyone know what the latest ideas are if there are any.

BTW makes me wonder if same mechanism is on the Equus and Hyundai is walking into a problem with a new vehicle.

I'm experiencing problems with the tilt positioning as well. The most common problem is that the tilt steering does not return to the memory setting automaticaly when I start the car, but sometimes it does. The other problem I noticed recently is that when I tried to adjust the tilt steering while driving one day the adjustment control knob was completely unresponsive. The problem was gone the next time I started the car. This certainly seems a bit flacky. I did call my local service advisor and of course they suggested I bring the car in. I may just do that but it will be up the car car to decide whether it is going to fail or not.

The one consistent thing I have noticed with Hyundai service (and this is only from my experience with my local service advisors) is that they always seem to be surprised like they have never heard of any of these issues. I find that a little hard to believe but I could be mistaking.

I still love the car and ultimately these are small issues (to me at least). If am left stranded somewhere then that would be something that I would be pissed about. If I get any results from the dealership, I'll post the solution here.

Having had the limit switch replaced a few months ago, I too am noticing a gradual creep away from the preset position with each on/off cycle. I can live with this so long as it responds to the manual switch.

I just had my switch replaced also and this whole situation worries me a little; not that it happens, but that it's been a problem for so long. 2009 and 2010 have both had the problem, some owners repeatedly.

For a product of the Genny's caliber and aspirations, these problems should be researched and fixed quickly by the manufacturer. This one's apparently been going on for quite some time. It's not a big deal, so why hasn't it been properly addressed? It looks like instead of re-engineering the part, they're replacing either with the same part as the original, or are unwilling to spend what it takes to make sure the replacement is durable enough to do the job.

Having part failures is normal. It's how they're addressed that helps determine the reputation of the product.

Today, I had my entire steering column replaced to restore the full range of motion on my tilt steering wheel (as described in this thread). They told me I did not have a limit switch and instead replaced the entire thing.

No luck- either they did not actually change the steering column, or the problem was not in the column. I think it may be time to take it to a larger Hyundai dealership... Maybe they will be able to help me, rather than my small dealership in my town.

So for the moment, I can see the speedometer, but it does not move any further up.

Exact same problem I have. Car is in the shop now and they hope to have a solution by tomorrow. They checked the tilt function against 2 other Gennys and saw first hand the significant difference in range.

I alerted them that in NJ 3 times = lemon law and they have one visit left after this attempt to find a fix. The problem is if other cars have the same problem a Lemon Law replacement may be no better.

Are all of these 2009's in this thread. I have an April build 2010 and have not had one problem with the car. No Steering tilt problems at all.
