That is a serious piece of kit. I've never seen an instrument cluster with cast aluminum chassis like that. Looks like it's used as a heat sink, so I'm guessing this thing draws a lot more power than an "analog" cluster. I put quotations around "analog", because these days, they are all digital, the traditional clusters just converts the data it receives from the ECU back into mechanical sweeping needle analog displays.
$1500 is a lot of cash. I can think of better mods to spend that kinda money on. That said, the instrument cluster does account for a huge part of how the driver interacts with the car, so it isn't exactly frivolous.
BTW, looks like it has a receptacle for a GPS connector. I doubt the traditional clusters have that.
