Thinking of getting a new genesis

Hi All:

Sorry for starting this new thread. But I am looking for a new car and came across the genesis and love the features and everything it has to offer.
I am currently on my 2nd maxima and initially planned on getting latest maxima. However, after reading all about the genesis, I am interested in the genesis.

However, I never had a hyundai before and not sure how their engines are. I have heard bad things about their othe models (please don't be offended). However, i did hear that this gensis model is something totally new. so, this is what I am trying to figure out:

1. How are their engines? who has the most # of Miles in this forum and how does your engine sound and run? The maximas, go for a while and still are pretty smooth.

2. Anyone have the 2010? and notice that the issues reported for 2009 are gone or rectified?

3. Anyone here regret getting into a genesis? from a maxima or a lexus?

4. I read a thread here about lemon genesis. How many have you seen one like that? is it only a few isolated incidents? I also read something about how genesis lost power on the HWY. My maximas have never done that in the past 8 years or so...

I've had my Genesis for 10 months and, generally, think it's a great car. However, I have concerns regarding the attitude that Hyundai USA has regarding after-purchase service.

A radio issue that should have been a simple fix took several months, multiple trips to the dealer and hours on the phone with Hyundai to finally get resolved.

My 2010 car was sold with a 2008 GPS database that is seriously outdated. Hyundai has offered a free update to certain 2009 and 2010 vehicles (tech package) but not to my car. Hyundai told me that if an update ever did come out for my car, it would not be free.

I've owned cars from Infiniti, Lexus, Acura, Audi and BMW. With the exception of Audi in the 80's, I've never experienced a manufacturer with such a cavalier attitude. My last Audi purchase was in 1985. Bottom line: If I had it to do over I probably would have purchased the Infiniti M even though it is significantly more expensive.

I currently have a Lexus which includes a certain dealer relationship which includes "special handling". They are skilled at meeting the expectations of their special customers who can afford their cars and generally are used to upgraded customer service.

When I asked the sales manager what strategy Hyundai had developed to mirror the luxury dealer experience for their Genesis owners, he had a blank look and admitted that their was no differentiation for Genesis owners.

It seems as though that is the point of the previous share, where is the special handling luxury car owners have come to expect?
 
I went from a 2001 Maxima to a 2010 Genesis and have no regrets whatsoever. The Maxima was a great car, as you say, 132,000 miles and still smooth running. However, the Genesis is a superior vehicle in almost every respect. I have a bit over 10,000 miles without a problem other than the steering column TSB that was rectified and has not been an issue since.

The V6 is smooth, quiet and very peppy.

The suspension issues with the 2009 model seem to have been corrected with the 2010. I have no complaints on that score.

As far as dealer issues go, I don't plan on seeing him too often. I don't care what kind of donuts he serves or if his chairs are cushy enough. If I end up spending enough time there for the "dealer experience" to actually be a factor, then I will reluctantly come to the conclusion that I chose the wrong vehicle.

Customer experience varies at different dealerships. While I don't think Genesis owners get "special handling" at my dealer, it seems to me that all customers get very good treatment. I was treated well when I had an Azera, and I am still treated well as a Genesis owner. When I chat with other service customers, regardless of model owned, they all say they are very happy with the level of service provided. Having said that, it's clear from comments in this forum that not all dealers are up to this standard of service, unfortunately.

as far as nissan goes, I have had the worst experience and as well as the best experience. Example: there is a minor spark knock noise that comes up in my car and no one has ever been able to fix it, even after numerous visits. But that's very minor and once in a while, so i don't mind it. Other than that, there is not a single incident in the past where i left like my car gave up on me. I live in Canada and the maxima and genesis are going to cost me about the same. I don't mind going back to nissan as i know it works great. But want to try something different.
 
Hehe... I can't comment on the Nissan dealership experience, because I never had to return there except for a check engine light shortly before I traded it in. All I ever did for that car in 132,000 miles was routine maintenance that did not require dealer involvement. The Genesis will be hard pressed to match its reliability.
 
go drive a genesis 4.6 V8, if you fall in love do some more research and try to get the best deal possible
 
Traded in my wife's LS430 and have never looked back. I have 4,400 miles on a 2010 4.6 V8 with Tech package. We love the car. Best sound system that I have ever had in a car.

1: I have the V6 and the engine is fine, except for a dry startup noise. It sounds like valves clattering. Mine has gotten worse since the car was new and recently 2 different loaners both do it. Once running it is very quiet, though, not as refined as Toy/Lexus 3.5 V6.

2: The biggest issue with the 09s is the ride. I have an early 09 and will say that I hardly notice any changes in the ride of the 2010. The rear end may be a little firmer in the 10, however, its the same nervous, jittery ride.

3: I was considering a ES350 or another Avalon... yes big regrets as I hate the way this car rides. I never noticed on the test drive the full characteristics of the suspension. My Avalon was in the shop less for the entire time I owned it, than my Genesis in 15K.

4: In 15K miles I have had the steering wheel TSB, both interior "B" pillars replaced (vinyl peeled away), sun visor replaced (light not working), and random stalling and no power issues. The power issues appear to be resolved by the dealer cleaning and re-torquing all ground connections per Hyundai corporate.

Sorry to write a novel, however, my best advice is to drive the Genesis on a lot of the roads you drive everyday to make sure you like it. I am not sure which Lexus you have but most of them ride softer/plusher than the Genesis.

Have 18K on my 2010 4.6 and other than the shi## y Dunlop tires, I love this car! I've owned 47 cars in my life and with the exception of my 86 928S Porsche, this car is my favorite !
 
Very happy with the Genesis , I have the 2009 V8 with just over 50k miles still runs like the day I picked it up..

Only complaint I had were the stock dunlop tires... long since gone...
 
I traded in a 2002 Maxima for a 2010 Genesis. I went over 3000 miles today and I'm generally disappointed. Same complaint with the jittery ride. It's not something I noticed on my test drive either. It was really a day two or three realization that something was not quite right. I live in Pennsylvania and the roads around me are not great. On perfectly smooth roads it is a fine ride, but my daily commute bothers me. I have a feeling that some people are more sensitive than others so perhaps you will not notice it. I've let friends test drive my car and they don't really notice it, but nether did I on that first drive. As far as features, styling, and engine are concerned, it's a beautiful car and it really hauls. Just wish it were smoother on uneven roads.
 
I like the look of the new Maxima, but it's quite a bit smaller than the Genesis, and I think the road tests on both show the 4.6 Genesis is quicker (but you'd have to check). So if you like more interior room, the Genesis is the way to go. That and I think (even with the 2011 prices) the Hyundai remains a better value.

I traded my early 2009 3.6 prem pack + for a 2011 4.6 tech and the diference is like day and night in every aspect. quality, suspension and power, ect. no regrates for the trade, the 2011 4.6 is much superior.

Worth noting that the Genesis V8 is a repeater on the (a?) list of top 10 car engines, and the only V8. Also worth noting that Hyundai's initial quality is scoring in the first few (although this has dropped due to gains by Ford and Honda this year, Hyundai's defects-per-100 actually held the same at 102, and others improved), and also high in overall quality. Good quality means less dealer time after purchase, but it is my assumption as a new Genesis owner that my dealer experiences, when necessary (and given the subsystems in the car, I'm sure they will be) will involve some frustration. I saw no espresso machine in the lobby, and lots of econoboxes. However, the shop is spotless, and the dealer has a very good reputation, so my calculus was that the risk associated with those factors was outweighed by the great pleasure I take in the car--and the many extra dollars in the bank.

I drove several copies before deciding, and the dealer gave me the one I ended up in for 36 hours before I threw the switch. I've also only got 450 miles on the car . . . so . . . consider the source.
 
I've owned a few Nissan's (and Datsun's) in my day and they are good vehicles. I prefer them over Toyota, however comparing a Maxima to a Genesis is apples to oranges. The Maxima is a front driver and the Genesis is a rear driver. Both engines are rated by Wards as some of the world's best, but it is hard to beat that 4.6 V8 linked up to a 6 speed. There is no torque steering with the Genesis. After you get rid of those OEM tires and get a decent set, you are set for miles of driving pleasure. Like Matt Z, I too have owned more than my fair share (51) of vehicles. This Genesis is the best one I've ever owned. I recently took an 8000 mile road trip in mine and I was glad I had the Genesis. It will run mile after mile in complete comfort.

Do yourself a favor and get the Genesis.

I couldn't agree more. The car just doesn't ride well, IMO. I thought it was just my car, but I have driven a few loaner 2010s and they are just as bad. I have come to the ultimate conclusion, that cars that ride like the Genesis are not for me.

I think this ride issue is really just a matter of expectation and preference. I come from a long line of sports cars, with a lot of miscellaneous junk in between, and I love the way my Genesis rides and handles. I am now just a commuter, and seldom take long trips. I'm way past the stage of aggressive driving and pushing the limits of my car, though: a person who is running slaloms or whatever might find the car lacking. As others here have said, the only way to determine if this car is for you is to drive it under conditions you are likely to encounter in real life and see how you like it.
