  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Surround sound

Well I would have sworn that I read that the Genesis was capable of streaming audio via blue tooth... I looked in vain for the reference I remebered reading in the DIS manual. I realised, after searching for about five minutes, that if the car had Bluetooth Streaming Audio Hyundai sure wouldn't hide it. In fact they would be front and center advertising its capability. Much like the breakaway tight end who misses an easy pass for touch down "My BAD!".

Yep. But what's really bad is that the non-Tech folks get it and we don't.
You'd think it would be opposite.

I sure wish they would get a fix for this one. Otherwise I am going to try the "replace the head unit" route.

I remember the reference for streaming music via Bluetooth: in the main manual for the 2012 3.8 Genesis under the heading "Using the head unit as Bluetooth music" it states The head unit supports A2DP ~ and AVRCP...so wether our vehicle does or does not stream music the manual reports that it will.

Moving forward on this issue I was told by the Hyundai customer service center to take my vehicle into a local dealer today at 1pm to confirm surround sound setting not staying checked for all sources after ignition restart. They already have a case number and all prior info that I have posted on this thread. I will post more info as it comes to me. Slowly the wheels turn...

Took my car to the dealer last Friday and they kept it all day. During that time all 4 Surround Sound settings were checked (AM, FM, XM and AUX) they said they checked them throughout the day and the settings remained. I reminded them that this was happening in at least an 8 hour period to my observation. I called the Customer Connect people at Hyundai and they suggested that the car be left overnight because Service should be open on Saturday. Went to dealer and Service had closed for the night and was not open on Saturday. I talked to the sales manager and the salesman that sold me the car. They went with me and we set the 4 settings and locked the car and left it overnight. I went back first thing Saturday morning and we unlocked the car and checked the settings. 3 of the 4 were unchecked. Verification.. Vindication!!

Called Monday and informed the Service manager and he said they would have their Tech guy work on it and give me a call back. I emailed him this thread, so they could see I was not the only one. I called again Tuesday and got my answer.

Wait for it.........

Wait for it.........

Working as designed.

They explained that they talked to Hyundai Engineering and confirmed the behavior on the other two 2012 Genesis on their lot. Following is an explanation of the design as told to me by the Service manager.

The stereo is designed to hold the last selected Surround Sound setting that was listened to as the car was shutoff. When you return to your car and start it, the last listened to component should reflect the Surround setting as selected, if it was selected before the car was shutoff. All other Surround settings will uncheck.

If you are listening to FM and you select Surround setting and then as you are driving you switch to XM and do not select Surround, you can expect all Surround settings to have unchecked.

Make sense? I hope this helps some of you. BY DESIGN and a crappy design at that. Should be 1 Setting for Surround Sound just like my BMW 525i that I traded in. Not so impressed with the Tech so far in Hyundai, compared to my old BMW and my wife's 2010 Lexus RX 450.

Interesting since we have the same Lexicon systems and Surround remains checked in all modes for me. I guess the 2 seconds to re-select Surround would irritate me too, though I don't think it would cause me to be "not so impressed" with the Tech.
Btw, just how much "surround" do you think you're getting from XM whether checked or unchecked? And did you know that a DVD-A will still produce true surround whether checked or unchecked?

I guess I better take mine back to dealer for a fix. Darned AV stays checked on surround sound when switching sources.

Often frustrating when having dealers address warranty issues. "Sorry, can't replicate it" heard too often but stating that something that is obviously flawed is operating as the way it should is a bit much.

I am sure that the true surround is as impressive on the AM setting as it is on the XM setting.;)

I do not know? Logic would state that one setting for Surround would be sufficient. I do not follow the logic that we need a surround setting for AM. I will continue to watch this thread for any updates.

I got the same "as designed" message too. which, i suppose, given all the other obvious user interaction problems isn't too far off :)

however, its complete nonsense. IMO, this is the type of stuff that will keep Hyundai from ever competing with the big guys (lexus, acura, infiniti, audi, etc) regardless of how many bells and whistles they add for the price.

when toyota wanted to break into the high end market with lexus, they focused on great service and customer experience. based on my experience with hyundai dealers, their service depts and stuff like this they are FAR away from moving up to the big leagues.

i've had an acura, audi, lexus and mb in the past. after spending a few months with my genesis ('12 3.8 tech) i find parts of it fun and parts of it impressive. however, i'd never buy another hyundai (let alone consider the equus) based on the entire overall experience of the car and the dealerships. hard to explain, but they don't quite put the whole package together like the other guys do. maybe they will some day, but they don't have "it" yet.

Hello John,
We have communicated a few times and you told me in our last conversation on 10/5/11 that an update was in process of correcting the surround sound not retaining its checked box setting between ignition starts on various sources and approx. 12 hours of time. Looks like the local dealer is going to replace my whole head unit as no update or campaign has been issued, and a new head unit has been ordered on back order due the end of this month.
If you have any further comments please speak now or forever hold your peace.

Hello Tim.
I understand your frustration. I too am anxious for the software fix to be released. I do not know all the logistics that has taken place but Harman is in communication with Hyundai in Korea actively on this issue. However, official release from Hyundai of the software update has not been given. My contacts at HMA are also anxious for it as well.

Thank you,
John

Thank you.

Your most welcome, although with my luck by the time they rip & tear out my new main head audio lexicon unit... and hopefully without any scratches or damages to the adjoining panels, watch this update become available! ARRRRRRGGGGG lol
I had the service bulliten TSB 11/1/036 campaign completed last month for the O2 sensors.
Love, love, love the car but am surprised they decided to do a replacement head unit knowing an update is in the pipeline...OH AND DID I SAY I LOVE THE CAR?

:)

Well replacing the entire head unit is good and bad. Right? I mean with the expense and time involved you have got to be happy with that level of response. On the other hand I just hate having my car "opened up" that way. It has been my experience that the dealership guys (Hyundai and et al) never get it back together they way it was. I had a satalite radio installed in the sunglass holder of my Toyota Tundra and now, two year later, there is a gap at the front of the interior ceiling cover (can't think of the correct term just now) that I just know was caused by the mechanics taking it apart for the radio install. I hope your experience with the Hyundai service department is much better. Thanks for the information and updates. I'll stay tuned to see how it all works out.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
The dealer is not sure of what's wrong with the audio; can't stream from my Iphone 4S; surround sound does not stay checked; and ipod does not allow to change albums or any selections until you unplug the ipod and start over. I have an appointment and will post after the dealer can contact technical support.

I'm having the same "unchecking surround sound" problem with my brand new 2012 4.6. My reading of this thread seems to indicate 2 solutions: replace the entire unit or "working as designed." Does anyone have further information? I'm taking it to the dealer on Friday, but would appreciate more knowledge before then. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Currently working as designed... I recognize that it occurs but I always keep it on XM so for me it always stays 'checked'
