  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Navigation update -- how much??

I called again MAPNSOFT and can not get a coherent answer. Some say two weeks, some say 3 weeks, some have no clue when they will release the new version for Non-Touch-Screen.

the worst thing is that nobody knows what is in the update. When I ask, I feel that i asked a pizza shop to serve caviar. They ave absolutely no answers and I feel they are all sleeping.

I just received an email from MapnSoft stating that their engineers have confirmed that an address issue that I had reported has been corrected on the updated map for the non touch screen due for release the end of this quarter.

It seems that they push the release further away. Two weeks ago they told me that is a couple of weeks it will be released.

Very strange. I think that they work 3hrs/week.

What a rip off... Got a quote from my dealer to upgrade the navigation system on my 2009 Genesis...$392 for the software and associated labor!!!! Are you kidding me? I can buy 3 garmins with lifetime map and traffic updates for that price! I don't even have an option to install the software myself. I escalated to Hyundai consumer affairs and then to one of their supervisors. NO HELP!!!! All they offered was to help by calling other local Hyundai dealers to see if anyone might have a lower cost. It's RIDICULOUS. I guess I'll just have to carry a garmin in my Genesis. Almost $400 to upgrade maps is a complete ripoff and not what I expected with a supposed luxury car.

With the newer Genesis sedans, you can purchase the updates and install them yourself. Updated software is $199 (according to MAPNSOFT.com).

Did anyone have success escalating with Hyundai or their dealer?

I just picked up a certified used 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6. So far it seems like a really good car and I am glad I someone told me about it when I was looking at cars. Anyway how can I tell if I have the navigation update in my car already? Oh also I use a flashdrive for music, is there a shuffle button?

When I read through threads like this I’m glad that I bought a base Genesis.;)

It’s about 50 miles to my dealer or any Hyundai dealer and if I had to be running back and forth with these types of problems I would fall out of love with both the car and the service department at my dealership very quickly.

There’s a guy that lives across the street that was the Tibetan map reader:) in the Hertz commercials and I rather put him in the back seat to navigate when I go on a long trip then fool around with these Tech packages.

I had the same issue with my $27 hamburger at the Waldorf. Apparently, hamburgers cost more there than they do at McDonalds, even if the latter is better.

DeeVa, I still have the choice of eating a hamburger at McDonalds or the Waldorf. Owners of the early Genesis sedans (w/o the touch screen Navi) don't have a choice since we cannot apply the update on our own - it must be done by a Hyundai dealer. The required labor costs more than the software update package.

Well actually we have choices:

1) Pay the dealer an outragious fee to upgrade
2) Live with the outdated maps
3) Bring along a portable GPS.

Since my maps are now quite out of date, I use the GPS on my Android phone.

I will admit, until this issue, I've been a pretty satisfied Genesis owner. It's the principle that Hyundai would install an inferior product. I should be able to install map updates on my own. That's pretty basic stuff.

If you want room service at the Waldorf, McDonalds is not an option. If you want to walk across the street to McDonalds or keep your Garmin, no one will stop you.

Map updates are a source of profit for Hyundai and dealers, so don't expect any big changes.

I recently purchased a Garmin 40LM (newest generation) for $90 delivered to my door. It was on sale, but can probably be purchased now for about $110 or less if you shop around. It includes free lifetime map updates issued online quarterly. The unit speaks names and streets and has a 4.3" screen. The 50LM has a larger screen, but I thought it was too large considering where I place it on my dash when needed. The smaller screen makes it portable enough to fit in my pocket (just slightly larger than most cell phones).

Factory installed GPS is a gigantic rip-off IMO, and if anyone keeps their car past the warranty period (3 years for GPS) and has a problem, then it would cost a fortune to have repaired (not to mention the fortune it costs for map updates).

The map update just came out last week. After complaining to my dealership who services the car and Hyundai consumer affairs, I made progress. Hyundai consumer affairs said if I pay for the update and submit my receipts they will request a full refund. No guarantees but after escalating to a supervisor, she was optimistic I would get some if not all refunded. I then worked my dealership, since I've done all service there and they've been pretty good. They came back and reduced the upgrade cost to me from $396 to $245. Still a lot but after getting all messed up on a recent trip because the maps were so out of date, I'll take my chances. I will post an update when I find out the outcome from Hyundai consumer affairs.

That is great. I wonder if this is the update that we have all been waiting for?

[hmm, no update listed for 2012. Ver 4 available for 2009-11. Odd]

Hello I just picked up a certified used 2009 4.6 with tech pkg. How can I tell if I have the latest nav update in it? Is there a function that is available on the new updates that aren't available with the stock firmware?

This sounds like a major ripoff. I would venture that all the other auto companies do the same. First off the navigation unit is way more expensive than a Garmin 660. Secondly, I have the lifetime update program and it cost about $90 and it is very simple to do in the comfort of my home.
I seriously doubt that I will pop for the Tech when I replace my techless 2009 Genesis.

I remember the first year for the Honda Odyssey the GPS had to be updated at the dealer. In all subsequent years you just had to buy an outrageously expensive DVD ($150-200?) and then pop it in the unit and it would update itself.

I wonder why there is no update for the 2012s?

Yea this map update BS is just that...BS. Why didn't Hyundai just contract with, say, GARMIN? This is doo-doo. This entire NAV system in this 'luxury' car just seems to be an afterthought. Opinions?

And another thing: EVERY NAV system should also display the ELEVATION you are at, should you wish to know, as well. My Garmin 1300LMT does that. And I have FREE LIFETIME MAPS and TRAFFIC updates as well. And I got it for about $129 two Black Fridays ago.

Read your manual. The Genesis does give the elevation. And the Genesis Nav is much better than my Mercedes nav.

Yea, we were driving around up in the mountains a couple weeks ago wishing it displayed our altitude. Half way home and in the flat lands my wife was playing around with it trying to change another setting and came upon the altitude. It would be nice to have it displayed on the map/nav screen when you want. Of course as I say it my mind flashes to the British Top Gear episode with a M BMW. Oh, how they ragged on it's endless options.

Also gives longitude and latitude as well as GPS signal strength. I think you bring up with the map by pushing down on the DIS knob.

I read the manual - I missed it! THANKS! I'm much happier now!
It's not that I don't like the NAV, I love it, but know it could be better. I'd LOVE the 3D view...even a STREET VIEW like I can get on my 'droid. I'm a pilot as well and the 3D images and views mean lot me to be able to orient myself to things like geographical landmarks, etc.

:D
