  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

6 months, 2600 miles, when to change oil?

I've had the Genesis for alomost 6 months. Ironically I have not been driving much since I moved to LA. The car has only 2600 miles on it. I changed the oil at 100 miles and 600 miles. I'm using synthetic. Since it may take me another 6 months to get to 4500 miles and another year to get to 7500 (if driving habits stay the same); when do you think I should do the next oil change?

By the way..I really dig this car. I like it more and more.

Thanks.

Per your Owner's Manual, every 7,500 miles *OR* every 12 months, whichever comes first.

If you think you use your car under "severe driving conditions", just divide miles and months by 2. According to Hyundai.

Oil really does not "go bad" in the crankcase. Oil sitting on the shelf sits sometimes more than 12 months. Sure if the engine is dirty, high mileage, having sitting in sludge for a long time is not good.

In your case- few miles- let the miles pile on.

100 miles a week living in LA? When I lived in San Diego, I didn't know anybody who put less than 35,000 miles a year on their car.

Thanks Guys. I was gonna check the manual when I got home but thought I'd ask here while at work.

Since you are using synthetic, you can have longer time and miles driven intervals than conventional oil, so long as you comply with the requirements to maintain the warranty. Synthetic oil is a very good choice for those who don't drive much or take mostly short trips.

You're killing me...6 months and 2600 miles.
I think I walk more than that!

Also, how do you know you like it so much when you hardly drive it?
(Just kidding... :D )

When they called me to schedule my complementary first Oil Change, they seemed shocked.
I told them I needed an appointment for the 3,750 change three weeks after I took delivery and they thought I was kidding.

:) That's why I wrote I like it more and more...with each mile a week I put on it. And by the way, I think you might be doing a lot of joy driving in that R-spec.

When I lived here before it took me an hour during rush hour to get to work and work was only 10 miles up Olympic Blvd. I just got lucky and found an office by where I live.

Oil sitting on a shelve seald for 12 months is fine.

Oil sitting in an engine with heat cycles and vented to the atmosphere is a different story. Change it at 12 months if you don't hit the 7500 mile mark first . It won't do any harm and will do the engine good as well as give you a bit of peace of mind. ;)

Nah, it's just for the daily commute and a little work related driving (lunches/dinners/ball games)... all "On-The-Job"

My round trip commute is 140 Miles.

I keep telling them a Lease is no good for me, but they insist on doing it.
My last one was a 3 Year/36K Mile and I turned it in after 34 months with a bit over 90K on the odometer.

They figured out it was cheaper to buy out the lease and donate the car to charity...

Thanks Mark.

There is a section in the manual referring to extreme usage, which has much shorter oil change intervals.
Short trips where the oil is never fully warmed is, in my opinion, extreme usage. We have a coolant temp gauge, but no oil temp gauge. Coolant reaches fully warm in just a few miles. Not so for oil - it always took at least ten miles on cars I have had with oil temp gauges.
My wife's BMW (manual says change at one year/15000 mi) is used for short trips, accumulating less than 5K a year. I change its oil every six months.

With 100% synthetic oil you have nothing to worry about. My Genny has had Mobil 1 since its first oil change. Its every 7,500 for me.

Check out www.bobistheoilguy.com for some interesting reading.

Amen. Think sludge-avoidance and being saved from the engine Anti-Christ.
