If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hey peeps new to this forum, I have a 2012 genesis 3.8 with 9k miles on it but have noticed the rear bumper is getting stained with the black smoke I believe of the tail pipes, also when I was on my way to Vegas I floored it to pass another vehicle and car acted fine but when I looked back on my rear view mirror I saw a cloud of black smoke? O.O what you guys think? Is this happening you any of you? Has it gotten attention of corporate ?

It is because of the ethenal in the fuel

Yeah but is this normal? I don't think it is specially the bumper getting stained? U meant ethanol?

It is on all exhaust tips. That is why I don't like exhaust tips that go through bumpers. My Dad had a 1956 Cadillac when I was boy and it did the same thing. He was always cleaning the tips on the rear bumper and polishing the brass on the front grill.

Yes, it's crazy to route the tips through the rear bumper 'cause it makes a mess. Seems to be a big styling feature on a lot of luxoboxes, though, including the Lexi, not to mention the new Azera.

The exhaust stains om my 2012 Genesis began right after I purchased it. After a trip to Atlanta and back from Dallas, I returned to the dealership to pick up the license tags and pointed our the stains on the bumper. I was told that it was due to cold weather, and it would not happen when it warmed up. ????

This has been an ongoing problem for eight months. Some of the reasons that I have been told by Hyundai are: the gas is too rich; it will stop at 10,000 miles; aggressive driving; that's the way they are made; I don't know: and the latest after the car was in the shop again (3rd time for this problem). YOU JUST HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT!

My vehicle is white and the bumper stains are nasty looking, ugly, and distract from the image of the car. Apparently Hyundai's response is they are not going to correct the problem. In my opinion, this is caused by a design flaw as the exhaust should be funneled downward in instead of outward towards the curvature of the bumper. The only way to cure the problem is to extend the exhaust pipe beyond the curvature (which would probable make it uglier than the stains) or to place some sort of baffle within the exhaust pipes to steer the fumes downward as they should have been done in the first place.

Time to use Google:cool: GDI engines are very well known for this issue. Seach Caddy, Audi, BMW, Hyundai, and many more who offer a GDI engine. They all have the same issue.

I have a white Equus with the same problem. Use a high quality cleaner wax or quick detail to remove. It'll look like new. Unfortunately, have to do it every 3-4 washes (1-2x per month) or every wash if you're OCD.

Yes, it is soot. I use 409 and a microfiber cloth when I wash the car. Then some wax...the beasts are sooty creatures.

I also have a white 2012 Genny with 4000 miles. This has been happening from day 1. A magic eraser gets it off fairly easy but this is certainly a design flaw. The paint on my plastic bumper where it meets the car body is pretty shoddy as well. It would be nice if they would replace the bumper and exhaust system all at one visit. Haha. I must be over medicated.

Yeah I had gone from l.a to Vegas and coming bac I noticed it too at only less than 1k miles, the Hyundai mechanic had said it was because of the design of the bumper and then the service writer had said because of the direct injection but when I've floored it a couple of times it leaves a big cloud of black smoke behind which I also don't like, I think Hyundai wont look into it until there's enough of us complaining on that situation and they make it priority on fixing the issue

I've heard some ppl put Pam also so the black smoke won't stick to the bumper but u have to do a few coats on it

That would be called carbon monoxide poisoning.

I purchased my 2012 Genesis 3.8 in mid August. Have the same black smoke on my bumper as mentioned below. I just created a case with Hyundai customer service yesterday 10/22/12. They say don't have a current case or even a history on this issue. Can't believe it has not happened already and no one has brought it to their attention before. The salesman who sold me my Genesis has black smoke on his silver Genesis demo. The dealership say the black smoke is due to the fuel injected GDI engine which creates black smoke. They checked all the operating specs of the engine and they were within engine operating tolerances. I say the exhaust out the bumper looks good, but functionally attention to prevent this black smoke from collecting on the bumper and chrome exhaust channel is required. It appears the tailpipe needs to be extended with the chrome extensions or the tail pipe turned down possibly. In any event it is an engineering defect issue that requires a solution by Hyundai. The dealership says they can not do anything to void the warranty. Hyundai customer service needs to be made aware of this situation and to provide a proper solution to this issue of this great automobile we all enjoy.

Old drag racer's trick to keep rubber from sticking to the body. ;)

Clean it often and after each cleaning apply a detailing wax like Mothers or Nu-finish. I keep the tips on my 2011 clean by doing this easy TLC. I Clean the exhaust tips about twice a week when I clean the chrome tips on my BMW.
