If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Video in Motion

Took car to dealer, and they diagnosed problem that I thought was caused by cable as a bad head unit (we had a couple of times when the audio would not come on until after a couple of hours)...so they ordered one yesterday, should be here today, and they'll replace it on Thurs. Duh.

hi guys i know this post to the nav TV is old but why not play it safe and get some universal headrest monitors with built in DVD player and FM tuner this way your Adult or children passengers in the back seat can watch a movie or cartoon while you focus on the road. with the built in FM transmitter on the dvd player built in to the headrest monitor you can set your radio in the front to what ever the DVD player is tune to for example lets say the dvd player on the headrest is tune to 89.9FM then on your radio set the station to the same thing and control the volume from your head unit. thats what i am going to do when i get my Genesis, i also currently have that set up on my 02 Buick park avenue Ultra.

My Genisis is only 2 months old. Will installing this VIM device invalidate all factory warranties?

At least for the head unit and anything affected by it. For those touting the Magnusson-Moss Act, we can discuss the protection the law provides, but in practice, the dealer might have cause for coverage refusal due to functional changes made to parts and or accessories outside of original design parameters, not to mention considered illegal in the US.

The rest is up to you, how the dealer and/or manufacturer decides to interpret warranty coverage, the lawyers and the judge.

Debate on this topic can be found in any auto blog and forum on the net.

If you're concerned about warranty coverage and you cannot reverse the mod easily should a related problem arise, it may not be a good idea. I still enjoy the tech discussion around this topic.

It's an easy installation, and easy to remove if you need service. Generally speaking, though, unless they have some reason to dig into the area behind the head unit, it's pretty invisible...it's only activated by a LOOONG press of the voice activation button on the steering wheel.

Took almost two weeks but they finally got the new head unit in and replaced it. I can proceed with my VIM installation..will post how it comes out.

How did the ViM installation fair?

I was just reading on the VW forums about the same issue. Apparently someone downloaded a program onto a cd that fools the car into shutting the dvd player off at 255 mph instead of 5 mph.

I found it somewhat difficult to get the fiber connector out of the factory harness...I have to use a modified paperclip to slide in there to release it. You have to pull that fiber connector and move it to the back of the NAV-TV harness that plugs up to the back of the head unit.

How do we get someone to create a program like that for our headunit?

How to unlock RNS510 VIM TV Free for free (video in motion to play dvd while driving) The VOLKSWAGEN version

I found some info on another VW navigation board on how to do this but it's been deleted by the mods. So here is a summary and clearly worded article on how to unlock the RNS510 VIM video in motion (TV free) dvd player capability. This previously cost about $150 US for the plug-in box and here is all the info you need for free. The donation button is at the bottom of the page if this saved you some money. First, here is some background.

1. The RNS-510 DVD player will stop playing video faster around 5 mph. This is for safety's sake. See the legal disclaimer for the website. There are dvd players in many minivans so I feel it's reasonable to let a responsible adult decide if they want to enable this on their car and when to use this capability. Make sure to remove this feature before you sell the car.

2. There are hardware devices that will get allow video in motion. They do something to the speed signal which can also change how the GPS works when the GPS signal is lost (like a tunnel). This is because the car uses sensor input to determine position when the GPS signal is lost. These are also expensive.

3. There are many RNS-510 hardware versions and firmware versions. This script will work across multiple versions but it's not known which it will definitely work on. Most people report success but a few have reported failure. So far, nobody has reported a frozen unit but it's possible. DO NOT do this if you're not willing to eat a $1800 mistake for the trade off of getting VIM dvd in motion capability. And of course, neither I nor myturbodiesel.com are responsible for anything that YOU do out of your own free will to hack your car. I am not providing the script and did not write it, another website did. There are too many versions and combinations for me to know if it'll work on your car so please post if it works for you or not, your RNS510 hardware and firmware versions, and model/year. I have no way of verifying if posters are telling the truth so again, do this at your own risk.

There are software methods to enable VIM but you must use the Continental service tool which is expensive and not easily obtainable. Continental is the company that makes the RNS-510.

The way to get VIM yourself is the same idea behind how the continental tool does it - by changing a value in an internal chip to cut the dvd player at 255 mph instead of 5 mph. This basically raises the limit at which the DVD player will cut off. This is not a firmware flash, it's a script that hacks the RNS-510 and changes this value.

Burn a CD with the iso (cd image file) that contains the script. Press and hold the eject, day/night, and guide buttons. Immediately insert the CD and release the buttons. The video demo below shows just inserting the CD and that's it. Let it run. It may reboot a few times, just let it run. When done, it will display an OK message. Even though some people have reported an OK message, it hasn't worked for them.

So here is the site where you can download the iso file. http://www.robpol86.com/index.php/US...ideo_In_Motion The file you want to download is "RECODE VIM Berto89.zip" at the bottom. Extract it. Burn the image file "VIM_Berto89.iso" inside the zip file to a blank CD. The slower speed, the better. There are many free iso burning programs out there and most branded computers come with them. Then insert the CD as described above and shown in the video below. If you wish to revert the changes, use the other iso in the zip file to run the restore script. If your unit really does become frozen, try doing the reset procedure. If it's still frozen, you were warned!

Here is a demo:

I have a first version RNS510 and I've tried it a million different ways, it won't work on mine. It just says CD/DVD error.

EDIT: I used a different iso burning program and it now works fine! Total time was about 3 minutes. Your results may vary.

It is on my list of things to do before heading out and moving to OH next week. So it may not be until tomorrow evening or this weekend. The thing I learned about the install SO FAR is that:

1) TOTALLY shut power off to the unit. the On Off button does not do that.
2) Be VERY careful when removing the head unit to NOT let it slip or dangle by the center wire bundle (the thin wire bundle that connects to the video unit).
3) Use a paperclip to dislodge the fiber cable from the OEM bundle to place into the NAV-TV bundle.

that's about it.

How did the ViM installation fair?

OK, I got it done! SUCCESS!

As was off work this morning, prepping for "one of those every 5 year medical exams (guess which one)", I decided to install the NAV-TV ViM unit.

As I had attemted this before, several weeks ago, and had the head unit problems I decided to proceed a little differently.

I started the car, kept my foot on brake, and put it in D (shifer all the way back out of the way). I then shut the car off and applied the parking brake. I also placed a chock under the back wheel.

I then disconnected the negative (-) batt terminal in the trunk.

I had my plastic putty knife, cross tip screwdriver, 10mm socket/ratched, a very small screwdriver (flat tip), needle nose pliers, and paper clip.

I used the plastic putty knife to pry off the cover plate for radio. Remove the 4 screws and two 10 mm bolts. Place a towel over the console so you won't scratch it. Pull out the head unit. I can see they replaced my cut video cable off the read. It's difficult to remove so leave it on. Drawback is that you do not have a lot of room to work with. Helps to have a flashlight or 'headlight' as well.

I stress, be CAREFUL with head unit. Do not it fall or slide off the console either way. To do so will invite the cable issue I had. Remove the latching lock off the back side of the head unit. You have to carefully REMOVE the fiber optic cable from the OEM connector. That's where you need the small flat tip screwdriver and paper clip, if necessary. Carefully pry the plastic tab that holds the small protruding 'clip' on the fiber. Once it is free, carefully pull the fiber connector from it's place and install it into the SAME place on the ViM connector. Once done, then INSERT the VIiM connector into the head unit and latch it down to lock.

There is an intermediate cable that connects to a connector coming off the Vim harness. Connect it (only one connector and it's easy). Now at the end of that cable is an 18 pin connector for the "black box". Connect it to the black box.

OK, that was the easy part. Now you have to STUFF all that extra harness and wires back inside behind the head unit. This is what took an hour and a half to try and figure out. It was a slow process of push and fit, shove and fit.

It will be much easier if you have one of those wooden paint stir sticks. It makes stuffing the wires in easier as you have no room to maneuver. Without it, it would be much more difficult. Take a flashlight and get a good look at what room you have to work with. It isn't much.

The large Vim-OEM connector has to go up and to the left in that open area. IT's not a big area but enough to hold that big double connector and the wire bundles up in there with some judicious stuffing with the stick.

Once you maneuver it there, keep the other harness out to the front and see if you can get the head unit back into it's proper mount position. Once you get that, you can do it again if need be.

The black box has a USB cable. You can connect it now to figure out what you want do do with it. I left it on and it's coiled up and stuff to the RIGHT of the head unit between the head unit mount bracket and the dashboard that supports the glove box. ..that's the last thing to do.

Now, you have to ensure your black box harness has its wires RUN BEHIND the head unit cables for the antenna and the video display cables. If you don't run it behind them you will get into a bind. Anyways, do that, and now if you are careful, that black box will fit BEHIND the head unit, about in the middle, flat against the air box and just behind the metal bracket of head mount.

This is where i had to make a tactical decision. The harness is used for a LOT of vehicles and has a LOT Of extra long wires that dangle and get in the way. Speaker wires, ground wires, etc as well as two or three video cables. I did NOT cut the video cables or sound cables with the rca connectors. Left them alone. I did remove all other unused extraneous wires, clipped em and stuck them in the box. Once I got rid of THOSE, finishing up was easy. I was able to push the head unit back all the way with little effort. The black box usb cable is accessible in the are to the right..to upgrade the firmware I'll still have to remove the front cover but that is EASY with the plastic putty knife...you can run the cable anywhere you want for easier access. I did it my way cause it was easier.

Once I got it in, before bolting everything up, I hooked up the car battery, and got it back in park, brake on. I was able to determine my activities did not affect the head unit in any way. It still works fine. I a DVD of "Red Dawn" in and it played. At that point I then bolted head unit back in place, replaced bezel and cleaned up my tools.

I started the car and of course, the DVD started playing in park. Once I backed out of driveway, rear camera worked fine. As I started down the street to stop sign, I got the message about no video in motion. At stop sign I engaged the "VOICE COMMAND" button for 3 seconds and released it. The display then showed the video just fine and dandy.

I took it out and around the block, and it worked fine.

SO all in all, the project was a success.

As for cutting the wires...and if I have to return the unit. Oh well. They will have to charge me difference in those few unused cables I cut if need be.

Very happy with the results and my wife is happy with it as well.

:D

How did the ViM installation fair?

No. It's pretty much as I described it. It was very VERY hot in the car, even with the doors open. I was pouring sweat, BAD...I just wanted it to be done as fast as I could get it done, and the toughest part was finding a way to stuff the VIM Harness up in there behind the head unit. And I'm not taking out now...LOL...I'm sure, as others have done, that you could pay a good audio shop $50 or more to install it. LIke I said, it took me nearly two hours. :p

Any pics of the install?

I just installed VIM in my new 5.0, works as advertised! The most nerve-racking part was prying the surround off w/out breaking something. Thanks for all the helpful posts!

yea my wife really likes ours. You think you are going to bust the plastic when you start prying it off, but as I said, if you go to Home Depot or Ace or Lowes and pick up a couple of those 98 cent plastic putty knives, it's a no-brainer to pry it off.

Just stumbled across your post. I bought my car used and it appears that someone broke the fiber optic connector previously. The dealership has since glued together the plastic area surrounding the fiber optic cable making it impossible to connect the VIM harness. Can I purchase another harness from Hyundai? If so, do you have a part number? Would it be too hard to replace? Thanks.
