  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Video in Motion

The Genesis is my third car with a Voice Command interface, and arguably, one of the best when it comes to the accuracy of the voice recognition software. I have tested it with a few commands I have remembered using in my 2003 BMW 745i and worked every time. Still, only the subset of the full command-set is made available to the voice interface by design. So, I found myself using the DIS and/or physical controls as appropriate.

Regardless of the type of interaction the driver chooses to execute, I would argue that any other operation outside of the basic car functions should only be attempted if driving conditions allow. Multitasking is always distracting to a certain degree and slows down reaction time, whether it's taking or making a cellphone call or changing the radio station and especially when programming the Nav system. I do all these things including the use my Nav-TV video only when I'm sitting in traffic inching along, never when the car is moving faster than 5 mph. IMHO, Hyundai could have designed the factory interface to blank out the video feed above a certain speed, instead of allowing it only when the transmission is in Park, but their lawyers probably would not allow it.

I wish the Genesis had THIS Nav feature!!! I think it's great:) Start the video at 50 seconds.

Anyone seen any deals or been able to get any deals on VIM? Is $400 still the magic number?

I bought the navtv and it works great ! love it standing in traffic going to work nyc and very happy that I have it ---sometimes in rush hour you can be almost standing still for 20 mins---- I use it alot and love it ..

watching dvd while car in motion

Is there a way to watch a dvd while the car is in motion with out spending 400 dollars for a bypass piece

Re: watching dvd while car in motion

First cell phones now you want to watch a movie while driving????? I don't believe anyone would want to do something that dumb.

Re: watching dvd while car in motion

Ditto Mike! We've had several people hurt or killed around here in the FL panhandle while people have been texting. I think that is just unresponsible and wanting to watch a DVD while in motion even more so.

Re: watching dvd while car in motion

Where can I buy this nav-tv kit or VIM? It allows you to watch dvd's which the car is moving?

any updates on this? i was wondering if they made such a device as i know the Yukon Denali i had was capable of doing this without spending big $$$ just by disrupting a a sensor so the audio system thought it was in park.

If you watch a DVD while driving, wouldn't that distract you from your texting?

Just put this in a 2012 R-Spec. Did the install myself, the hardest part was putting everything back together, there are a lot of wires on my unit. Looks like extra inputs for various items. Works great so far. The unit is on sale for $299 now from nav tv.

The unit defaults to normal functionality where the video can't be displayed while driving. For those times when you want to see the video you can just put it in that mode. I think it makes sense for sitting in traffic or long trips where other people in the car can watch it.

So let me get this right. We have all kind of idiots texting while driving irrespective of how dangerous it is and now we are going have more idiots driving and watching movies. I may sell my Genesis and get a Hummer H1 so I feel safe around all the idiots.
Sorry if I offend anyone but please...can anyone tell me one good reason why they need to watch a movie while driving...other than just wanting to do it?

nb_mike I agree there are people texting and driving something that is very dangerous. Having this mod on my car is not going to change the fact that these people exist. I will assure you that you won't have to worry about me, and comparing this to texting is not a valid comparison, see my points below. On my post i mentioned 2 use cases : sitting in traffic (not driving) , and for passengers watching on long trips.

Driving is dangerous in general and to be a safe driver you have to manage risks. Risks when driving are distractions within the cockpit (most of which you can control) as well as external risks (that "idiot" texting in the car next to you driving into your lane, or someone running a red light, etc). I am a pilot, and I race motorcycles, two things were you are constantly managing risks. That is the most important thing you can do to be a safe driver is manage risk.

I can't speak for anyone else but in my case just because I have a car with this mod doesn't mean my eyes are glued to a screen watching a movie. The car has a great 7.1 surround sound with 11 channels of audio piped through 17 speakers. It is great to listen to and for my passengers to watch.

Do you ever do one or more of the following:
  • look at your navigation map screen while driving
  • check your blindspot
  • look in your side mirrors
  • look in your rear view mirrors
  • look at your passenger when they talk to you
  • Take your eyes off the road for 1 or more seconds
  • Talk on your cell phone

If you answered yes to any of those you are just as dangerous as the someone who has this modification done to their car. Driving comes first, if you want to glance at a screen that your passengers are watching for 1 or 2 seconds when you are (name your scenario: stuck in traffic, driving with no one around you, have the ability to look away from the road without harm to yourself or others around you) that is a risk, the same risk you take when you move your eyes of the road to perform any of the tasks above.

I left texting out of that list because that it a completely different scenario that shouldn't even be compared to this. Texting is an active activity usually two hands on the phone and eyes off the road looking at a small screen.

All the aforementioned activities above were really just passive activities where you, the driver, are taking in information from various inputs in the car. Mirrors, passenger conversations, information around your vehicle, cars pedestrians, blind spots are all sources of information you need to process. If adding another source of passive information (keep in mind this source already exists in the form of an 8in nav screen which you can already look at for radio information, navigation information, etc), if you switch that video source from "nav" to "dvd" and all the sudden the driver loses their ability to manage risks anymore, then I would argue that person shouldn't have this mod. If the driver is unaffected by that particular scenario then they will be fine and you won't have to worry about them on the road because they are a good driver who understands how to manage risk. I hope i am making my point, sometimes its hard to understand without having had a system like this in your car before. Again if someone is truly watching a movie and that is taking priority over their driving then they shouldn't have this unit.

Drive Safe.

Re: watching dvd while car in motion

This is the specific link for the device for the Genny with prem and tech package (has the round silver knobbus)...

http://navtv.com/product/47/genesis-vim-usb.html?forceShowProduct=1

The price is now $299.00. I am considering purchase. I do have a few questions, since you report that yours works great:

1) Did you install it yourself. If so, how difficult was the process of removing the DVD/NAV/Stereo head unit and installing this device. The sales rep at the company says there is very limited room to install the device. Since it is "USB updatable" did you run a USB cable from the unit to allow easy hookup to the unit. If you did not install it yourself, did you have a reputable car audio place do it?

2) When accessing video content, do you lose the NAV or other system's display? That is, if you want NAV display or XM control, and push the appropriate button, you still get the NAV display while DVD plays?

Also, not specifically for you, but I'm just tossing it out here: When somebody asks a question, they don't need a lecture as to whether it is "right" or "wrong"...it's fairly obvious that the person who ASKS the question is aware of the different issues regarding their question. No lectures please. It would be akin to asking about how to brew my own beer and then have several responses of "Well, you know that alcohol has been proven to cause birth defects in pregnant women, and can impair your ability to drive an automobile or machinery"... LoL...

:)

this is the place my guy got it from ....works great for me !!!
