  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Second Generation 17 Speaker Lexicon Stereo System

This afternoon I met up with my friend whom bought a new Cadillac ATS. Bose stereo sounded good. Then we listened to the Lexicon in the Genesis. We both agreed the Lexicon sounded better and was louder than the Bose. I must be in the minority, but I think the stereo sounds amazing in the Genesis.

Same here - I find Bose stuff is always too "boomy"!

You are not in the minority. It is a very good system made by a reputable company. Dependent on the media being played, it is a strong system which admittedly needs some tweaking to sound better with various material. In particular, the mid range which is too boosted and becomes muddy - lowering that can help, as does time which helps the speakers reproduce better. The lack of booming bass and a reference to ear bud fidelity has also skewed many listeners expectations.

As they are both Harmon, and the reviews hit on either side of the "brand war", that's pretty subjective, though on par with your usual "insight".

In the UK we have the 14 speaker system.

1) I'm wondering if people are getting out of their 1G, whose system has run for many hours, and into their 2G that has zero hours on the speakers. Decent quality speakers need a run-in time and improve with use.
2) What is the difference between the 14 and 17 speaker system? OK, 3 speakers, but what are they, do the additional speakers make any difference to sound quality, and is there a output power difference?
3) I cannot find the RMS wattage of the 14 speaker system. Anybody know what it is?
4) My only disappointment is that the equaliser is only bass, mid and treble. Is this the same on the 17 speaker system?
5) Where can we check for the latest firmware version. The firmware version is shown on the unit on the specs. page. Is it possible to update the firmware?
6) We get the surround sound option which sounds very good. Do you get this in the 14 and 17 speaker system?

I think that is all for now. :)

Nick

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
1 - No idea as I never owned a G1 - but proposed explanation is possible (at least to some degree)
2 - Units are as follows (per http://www.hyundaiproductinformation.com/vehicles/15_vehicles/15_genesisSedan/genesisSedan_compare_trim_level.asp - this is for 2015, but the audio systems did not change for 2016 - main differences bolded):
  • 14 speaker - Mobis AM/FM/HD Radio/SiriusXM/CD/MP3 audio system with Lexicon® Logic 7® surround sound system and 14 premium speakers and Lexicon® 12-Channel digital external amplifier with speed sensing volume control (900 Watts)

  • 17 speaker - LG AM/FM/HD Radio/SiriusXM®/CD/DVD Player/M3 Lexicon® Logic 7® Surround sound system w/17 high efficiency speakers and Lexicon® 12-channel digital external amplifier (900W) -(mine has speed sensing volume control too, even though not mentioned in official description)
3 - See above = 900 Watts
4 - Yes
5 - Not sure if the audio unit has any updates - check with your dealer?
6 - Yes, Logic 7 Surround on both (see #2)

I'm seeing a LOT of complaints about the 2nd gen 17 speaker system. Almost all reviews stating how lacking the bass is, and how "dull" the system feels, overall. My '09 17 speaker system is absolutely fantastic. I couldn't be happier. The system was one of the #1 motivating factors for me when buying this car. It's just sad to think that negative changes have been made for the new generation.

The more I read about this vehicle, the less motivated I feel to upgrade :(

Where are you seeing these complaints? It sounds great to me.

I can tell you the Gen1 system did sound quite a bit better than the Gen2 and both were the 17 speaker Lexicon. In my case not an issue since I am not a music person so to say.

I will assume the "LOT" in caps should signify huge, tremendous numbers, probably in the 10's.

The key will be how many are actual owners and have the car and that system. There is an internet forum effect which somehow can take a single post and have it appear to morph into some kind of mass opinion. If you enjoy your car, keep it, but the data you may be using to justify that decision may be less than stellar. Unless you sat in, drove and experienced the new generation car, you are relying on others to shape your opinion. The current system is an excellent in car system from a respected audio company, just as the G1 was.

Quit reading what others say and drive one.

I think our system in the GEN2 is awesome. I have turned off the Surround sound it is a much crisper sound but that is just me. Others find it better with the Surround sound on. Listening to music is a personal preference in what you like or dislike. More bass, less bass etc...

About the bass, I wrote in a different theme I think, that there is an option called Power Bass in the DIS, but on my car is set to OFF. I think this can be controlled by the dealer or service engineers.

I have the 2009 and the weakest link by far is the head unit with it's limited DSP (including EQ).

I took my tablet running Jriver which allowed me to play FLAC, tweak with parametric EQ and output to external DAC and then through Aux-In and the difference was breathtaking.:D

The setup was a bit too cumbersome for everyday driving but I'm pursuing again:

  • Tablet
  • External DAC
  • Joyconn adapter to control tablet with steering wheel controls
  • Possibly active crossover to drive additional sub leaving OEM sub for mid-bass

I'm no audophile, but why would you need a tablet? Wouldn't the same software work on a larger phone? Admittedly not as well as on a tablet.

Actually - as the software is the same on both platforms - the end results & "how it works" would be the same.
