If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Has anybody tried to remove the chrome inserts on the 18" v6 wheels. I hated the wheels and tried to get the dealer to give me the 4.6 wheels. We tossed the winged caps on and it was a thousand percent better, but I still think the wheels would look better without the inserts. any experience?

Don't do it! Each spoke has 2 tiny holes used to secure the small chrome piece. You could take each wheel off and use a dremmel tool to file down the rivet on the inside of each spoke and the chrome piece should come off with no touble, but you'll still have 2 silly looking small holes on each spoke.

Your best bet is to get a V8 owner to trade wheels w/ you. I've heard a couple V8 owners say they preferred the 18" V6 wheels.

The biggest issue with the 18" 4.6 wheels is that the winged caps, which are designed for the 3.8, look funny since the 4.6 caps are a continuation of the spoke design. So for those who want the wings instead of the flying H, you either have to settle for caps that look like they don't belong on the wheel or you have to get the modded mini wing caps constructed from the winged 17" caps and the flying H 18" 4.6 cap.

Can't you also use the stick on Genesis emblem that many people, myself included, have used on their steering wheels?

I think you can, but I think it would look odd, given that the sticker is oval with a length that's almost identical to the width of the center cap on the 4.6 wheels. I think it would look like someone slapped a puffy sticker on the wheel caps, and it would cost around $40-70 for the badges. For the same price, you probably could do what the people who are charging $200+ for the customized caps are doing: get a set of 17" winged caps and replace the center core of the 18" 4.6 caps with them.

To each his own. I love my winged caps for my 4.6 and have received many compliments. I think they look great and IMO other caps that are modded on are those that don't look they belong (because they don't). These are the actual 4.6 spoked caps with the smaller wing design.

I think we're talking about the same thing. There are no OEM winged caps for the North American 4.6 18" wheels. Only aftermarket or ones that you DIY using the 17" caps and the stock 18" ones. Given the price that vendors are charging (double or more than the 3.8 18" caps and more than that compared to the 17" caps), it wouldn't surprise me if they are fabricating the "aftermarket" caps from the two sets of caps by shaving and gluing them.

To summarize, here are the options for the 18" 4.6 wheels:

1. Keep the Hyundai-logo caps
2. Use the caps for the 18" 3.8 wheels
3. Aftermarket or DIY caps that use the spoked caps with the 17" wheel caps in the center

Thanks,
What would you think of black chroming the inserts. Could they be taken off and put back on? Where are the tiny holes?

I was thinking about painting my chrome inserts black--I think it would give a nice contrast and match the wings. Probably look like black chrome when spinning. I was going to by an extra set for one wheel to check it out. Problem is those inserts are $9 each and I didn't want to waste $100 bucks to take a peak. Has anybody done this?

I'm not sure paint would hold up well. Maybe they could be powder coated?

BTW, here's what the wheels look like without the chrome pieces.

So, do the 17" wings fit into the space where the flying H fits on the 18" 4.6 wheels? You just push out the H and put in the 17" wings? Or would you have to somehow modify the 17" caps to get them to fit?

There's some speculation that what you describe is exactly what some of the aftermarket vendors are doing, which might explain why they're charging double the cost of the OEM caps (because they're using a 17" set and an 18" set to make one).

It honestly looks better with the holes lol. The chrome pieces look so chintzy. Its a shame because the only thing that makes those wheels look terrible is the added chrome. Thats my only complaint with the Genesis; adding chrome plastic for the sake of having more chrome :(

My wife actually likes the chromed inserts. I think they look OK, but much better than the holes. The problem I've read, is the inserts can break off...now that is really ugly!
