I dropped my V8 2009 at the dealer for some minor warranty repair (parking sensor switch and seat sensor replacement) - I got the fully loaded 2011 V8 as a loaner ... man, while I love the cruise control and auto-hold ... I can live without it. But the freaking suspension ... makes my 2009 feel loose like a 50year old *ooker

So, that gripe being out of the way (and no, I don't want to start another suspension thread) I am wondering if some of you went through the process of trading up a model year ... or 2. Based on KBB the trade-in value is still pretty good and more than I actually paid for my car (Fully loaded 2009 V8@12k miles).

Please share if you went through a similar experience - I would like to consider some options

If you want a 2011 then first sell yours yourself and buy a new 2011. You will save thousands of dollars. I have not traded in a vehicle since 1989 and only did it then because my wife did not want to know who ended up with our 1986 POS Mercury Sable LS (even the outside trim and interior knobs were falling off at 68,000 miles, tie rods ends bad, bad lifters, tranny went out, hoses blew, water pump bad, fuel punp bad, auto door locks quit and on and on)
 
I think you would be crazy not to wait until November when the 2012 comes out with the new 5.0 engine.
 
I agree with homeofstone in that you should sell your car privately. Hopefully the '12 will be out by early summer according to some sources.

Otoh, waiting will make your '09 a model year older and worth less.

Tough call, depends on if the 45 extra ponies is worth that. Also, the ZF tranny you have is a proven commodity. While I trust Hyundai, their 8 speed is new and home grown.

It won't be easy to fetch KBB value with an '09 Genesis.
What dealers are offering for trade-in value in quite lower than that. :(

Around here dealers are giving less than $20K for 09 V8 Tech's
I had a guy come tonight to look at my car for selling it outright.

Holly crap! Less that 20K for a V8? :eek: That is some insane depreciation. I can understand it is the first generation car that is constantly being tweaked in subsequent years, but to loose 50% of original value that fast is just crazy. If that is true nationwide, I can see driving mine until the wheels fall off!
 
What I don't get is how KBB stays in business. Every dealer everywhere tells you they don't use it... so who actually pays KBB? Their business model seems sort-of stupid. They provide numbers for trade values that nobody uses... and yet they exist? The whole thing is a friggen scam. heh.

When I went to a few differant dealers they had a black book and showed me that mine was worth $17,800. I saw it in black and white. It looked like an NADA book, but I believe it said black book on the front

The Black Book is what many car dealers use. It most always list the lowest value for a car. The values are mostly based on wholesale auction prices paid. A value listed in the Black Book in many cases is a low ball price that helps dealers make more profit in the long run.

NADA is a better source for true retail market value.

= 28,800.00 trade-in

NADA retail value is over 32,000.00.

I've gotten black book values multiple times only to be told that the cars go for less at auction, so I'm not getting the full value. Let's call it what it is: Retarded. Any company that provides a service based around giving values for a product... and is NEVER right... should have trouble being solvent. Unfortunately, that's not the case. heh.

I went to six dealers and all of them were within a few hundred of each other. My car list NADA as $25-26,000 for clean trade in. There book said almost $18K. They offered me almost $20K wich was above their "book value". What are you gonna do when all six dealers are telling you the same thing? Thats why I was doing private party

Your experience is the very reason about 35 years ago I started selling my cars to private parties then purchasing my new car.
