2009 sedan EGR monitor not ready for smog check

For what it's worth, I, too, have a 2009 Hyundai Genesis here in California that is recording a "NOT READY" result on a smog check vehicle inspection (refer to the attachment). This is my first attempt to ever have a smog certification in California. While the car was purchased at Stevens Creek Hyundai in the summer of 2008, it was shipped overseas at the beginning of 2009. We returned to the U.S. this summer and I've had no end of difficulty resolving this matter with Hyundai Motor America (Case #: 10585270).

For everyone's information, the car experienced a dead battery when it arrived in the states (after not having been driven for approximately 3 months). At the close of last month (August 2017), I took the car back to Stevens Creek Hyundai to replace the battery and have other preventive maintenance completed (i.e., replaced the tires, full wheel alignment, and an "all points" inspection). After spending in excess of $1,500, I was told by the Hyundai service representative that "all systems are in good working order."

Note that my 2009 Genesis had most recently completed a "conventional" smog inspection (i.e., "sniffer" in the tailpipe) at the beginning of 2017 while overseas. It had passed that inspection ... and all previous inspections (conducted every 2 years). I am confident that it is not spewing pollutants into the air.

... and, yes ... it only had 17,747 miles on the odometer as of the most recent attempt to pass the CA smog test (I was in a small country with plenty of cheap public transportation).

I've read in this thread that some Genesis owners have solved this problem by driving according to the "prescribed" driving cycle completion procedure. I've also read that some Genesis owners have followed this procedure and the problem remained. I've also read (several posts back) that an owner had the "OBDII Monitor" reset and that solved the problem. But it wasn't easy to have the reset completed.

I'm curious if there is a definitive solution to this problem. I'm also hopeful that Hyundai Motor America is reading this thread as I've yet to hear back from them on this issue. When I spoke to their customer representatives ... and escalated to their supervisors ... every one of them denied ever hearing about this problem. I stressed with them to read this thread, but ... to date ... I've seen no evidence that they've followed through.

At the moment, I'm awaiting a call back from Hyundai Motor America. When I last spoke to "Brad" at Hyundai Motor America on Monday (September 11, 2017), he committed to call me back no later than the end of Tuesday, September 12th. Today is Wednesday, September 13th and I've received no follow up call.

Yaoshi have you or the dealership tried the Kia Borrego Drive cycle I have posted? Between this board and another board it has worked for about 3 Hyundai owners and not worked for 1. Better percentages than the Prescribed Hyundia one I think.

HMA will not help you. Their solution is to buy a new Genesis. Or you could move out of the Peoples Republic of California to another state.

You can also try filing a case/complaint with CARB (Ca air resources board). As I posted above, they may be quite interested in non-compliant Hyundais running around--just witness the VW fiasco. CA used to allow up to two monitors to be "not ready" but I think they tightened that up recently.

There is an 8/80 warranty on a lot of emissions components but unfortunately looks like you are just one year out on that, well under mileage.

It's not that Hyundai is non-compliant, it is that they are too compliant, but only for the 2009 model (Hyundai fixed the problem after 2009). If one disconnects the battery, the factory stats are lost, and a complicated drive regimen is required to pass in CA (no other states have this problem).

Pardon my delay in providing a follow up. We've been in the process of moving.

I'm relieved to report that the problem was solved. Kudos to the Dublin (in northern California) Hyundai service department. If you're interested in reading my Yelp! review for them ... here it is - http://bit.ly/myYelpReview.

What was the definitive solution? Well ... driving the Genesis was required. The Dublin Hyundai service department had added approximately 110 miles to the odometer. I believe one of the technicians had driven the vehicle home to Stockton. That's why there were so many miles. They followed the instructions outlined on page 7 of the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) "Automotive and Smog Check News" newsletter from the fall of 2011. Uploading limits prevent me from attaching the .pdf ... but, if you search for "ARSC_Fall2011_R4.pdf" in Google, it's the first result.

Thanks for the Update Yaoshi!

That seems to be the entire Hyundai drive cycle (also attached in post#15 of this thread) so the EGR gets tripped somewhere in there. THe Kia one I posted targets the EGR monitor only so you won't have to do 140 Miles! Thats Crazy, props to the dealer for dedication!

Glad you got it worked out.
Now in the future if someone wants to replace your battery without a memory saver tell them to pound sand!!

Just an Update to this saga. With respect to the Kia Borrego the California BAR has admitted defeat! They have programmed their smog testing equipment to ignore the EGR monitor on the 2009 Kia Borrego (with the 3.8 V6). What this means is that even if your EGR monitor is incomplete you can still go for a test and it should pass.

This does not however help Hyundai Owners with the 3.8. I am not sure how we would go about getting the Hyundais on the OBD problems list. It seems with the Borrego they took one look at that drive cycle and said that is way to complicated. Perhaps if Hyundai put out a similar bulletin it would garner the same exemption. Just a thought.

HMA is too lazy to do that for its customers. Kudos to Kia.

Has there been any updates or new solutions to this problem? Moved to CA back in February and am unable to get this system to be smog ready. Driven over 1,500 miles and a few failed drive cycle attempts have been made. The posted drive cycle is impossible to do where I live. Not sure I would be able to do it on roads I'm familiar with anyways due to how ridiculous it is.

I'm close to the Dublin dealer but won't let them take my car for a couple of days.

Hello All,
Just purchased an 09 Genesis, but can't register it in S.Cali because of the "monitors not ready" issue.
Dealer wants to charge $120 with no guarantees !!
I've put on about 900 miles, tried the recommended drive cycle and nothing seems to work.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Please help!!

Is that a 3.8?

I'm not sure, but all Genesis owners should be concerned because they can't sell the car in California with this issue that's fairly common.

ALL Genesis owners?
Fairly common?

It’s good that you are not sure.

Correction: All 2009 Hyundai Genesis owners. Spoke to 3 different service advisers in OC. They're aware of the problem!

Wow! I was not aware of this risk at all. I may have dodged a bullet as I bought a 2009 4.6, 3 months ago (about Feb/March 2019), that did not have smog done by the seller; so i had to get smog done after buying the car, before being able to register it at the DMV. Luckily, it passed.
Now, the registration was a continuation of the prev owners, so expires in Sept 2019; not sure if DMV will make me redo another smog so soon again in Sept 2019 (hope they do not; do not want this issue/headache).

I don't think it effects 4.6 cars. But just to be on the safe side, if the battery dies, only replace it properly.

So I have an 09 3.8 I bought 2 years ago and now I am dealing with the won’t pass smog issue. I finally had to take it to the dealer to try to solve the problem. Has anyone found a solution around the dealer? I think it’s ridiculous that this issue exists and Hyundai hasn’t done anything to help the car owner. Thanks in advance.

UPDATE:
I just got my car back from the dealer. It was 2 hours of labor. The paper says the tech drove it with the computer hooked up until it said it was ready. Was only about 30 miles or so.
I picked it up and drove directly to smog station and IT PASSED!!! Yay. May I suggest contacting Bobby (service advisor) at Victorville Hyundai and maybe they can help you guys out as well.
