2009 sedan EGR monitor not ready for smog check

I'm giving up doing the Borrego drive cycle. I tried it at 2 am. Didn't work the first time though I admit I fluctuated above and below the required mph by a few miles. On the second try, I needed to slow down so I merged into the shoulder for the car behind me to pass and it happened to be a cop!

He pulled me over and asked why I drove on the shoulder. I explained and he gave me a warning. :cautious:

For what it's worth, I, too, have a 2009 Hyundai Genesis here in California that is recording a "NOT READY" result on a smog check vehicle inspection (refer to the attachment). This is my first attempt to ever have a smog certification in California. While the car was purchased at Stevens Creek Hyundai in the summer of 2008, it was shipped overseas at the beginning of 2009. We returned to the U.S. this summer and I've had no end of difficulty resolving this matter with Hyundai Motor America (Case #: 10585270).

For everyone's information, the car experienced a dead battery when it arrived in the states (after not having been driven for approximately 3 months). At the close of last month (August 2017), I took the car back to Stevens Creek Hyundai to replace the battery and have other preventive maintenance completed (i.e., replaced the tires, full wheel alignment, and an "all points" inspection). After spending in excess of $1,500, I was told by the Hyundai service representative that "all systems are in good working order."

Note that my 2009 Genesis had most recently completed a "conventional" smog inspection (i.e., "sniffer" in the tailpipe) at the beginning of 2017 while overseas. It had passed that inspection ... and all previous inspections (conducted every 2 years). I am confident that it is not spewing pollutants into the air.

... and, yes ... it only had 17,747 miles on the odometer as of the most recent attempt to pass the CA smog test (I was in a small country with plenty of cheap public transportation).

I've read in this thread that some Genesis owners have solved this problem by driving according to the "prescribed" driving cycle completion procedure. I've also read that some Genesis owners have followed this procedure and the problem remained. I've also read (several posts back) that an owner had the "OBDII Monitor" reset and that solved the problem. But it wasn't easy to have the reset completed.

I'm curious if there is a definitive solution to this problem. I'm also hopeful that Hyundai Motor America is reading this thread as I've yet to hear back from them on this issue. When I spoke to their customer representatives ... and escalated to their supervisors ... every one of them denied ever hearing about this problem. I stressed with them to read this thread, but ... to date ... I've seen no evidence that they've followed through.

At the moment, I'm awaiting a call back from Hyundai Motor America. When I last spoke to "Brad" at Hyundai Motor America on Monday (September 11, 2017), he committed to call me back no later than the end of Tuesday, September 12th. Today is Wednesday, September 13th and I've received no follow up call.

Just had the almost dead battery, time for Oregon's Dept. of Environmental Quality test, no technicians at Hyundai but a great service writer, experience. I don't think this problem occurs just on Genesis or CA or OR. Solution: Replace battery. Buy Innova CarScan Advisor OBD2 code checker model 5210. $90. Do a few of the suggestions for renewing the Drive Cycle such as Start the car and idle for 5 to 15 minutes with the 5210 plugged in. Ask your wife or partner to join you on a drive. Include 50 miles of freeway with stops. Lunch? Shopping? Then drive some country roads, wine tasting? When safe, glance at the 5210. When all of the tested sensors are green, go home. Next day take the test.

May I ask if you actually had to follow the Drive Cycle specified in that Borego page in your "leisure" driving? Or was it mostly long, various style driving or loosely following some drive cycle?

Thanks

Think John-Scotts profile says he has a 14-15. Sure they have figured this problem out for those. Main problem seems to be more in the 09-11 years.

I have 2012. Am I in some sort of forgotten limbo?

Apparently the mechanic at a shop was able to put my Gen 2012 3.8L on their roller. He said...why not, it's rear drive. And he used the roller and some street driving and was able to get the EGR to respond green but also along with Engine code P0021 appear, which I had never seen it.

According to him and my own research, p0021 can be as simple as bad, low oil or as severe as internal engine!! [Sigh]

But I could swear that I'm not experiencing any bad symptoms. The car seems running great and quiet. Good enough for me.

But the car is "dead" in my drive way without being able to smog check and register for operation. With this code or no code, no ERG ready! :(

Oh god, why can't Hyundai have an ez solution like flashing the ECU or an easy drive cycle or something. Can I use 13-15 ECU part or something?

P0021 is the OBD-II generic code indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has determined that the bank 2 intake camshaft is more advanced than what the ECM has commanded it to be. This over advanced condition could be during advancing, or retarding of the camshaft timing.

Well that makes sense that you got that code when trying to get the EGR monitor to set. That is how the ECU created the EGR effect by advancing and retarding the variable valve timing. SO going through the 45-55 cycle had that sucker working overtime. But that is the point of not giving a passing smog till the monitors are run because the ECU does not catch a problem until they attempt to run. So yea bad news for you but everything is working as it should be.

No the state bar put an end to modifying the ECU tuner files about a year ago, not that you could have done it anyway, It's driving the hot rod guys crazy!!

The car runs well as far as I feel. No engine light if we don't run that cycle, I guess. (we ran it once and delete the code).

The shop recommends (a) "to replace left intake camshaft oil control solenoid first." $450; and (b) "Possible camshaft sprocket also"

He said (a) is a part outside the engine, doesn't guarantee to resolve the problem. (b) is inside the engine and very costly, possibly not worth it in some car!!!

I got the shell of this car in early Feb. Have another mechanic changed out the engine, totally put everything on his hand as to buy a used engine and put in the work. $3k total (whatever he asked).

You think I should go back to the "engine" guy and put this issue on him? What's my recourse and options from here? The engine is still on 90 day warranty.

Helps, guys

Yea if it i still under warranty take it back to him ASAP. Basically tell him he needs to get that EGR Monitor to complete with out a code. If he can do it without replacing any parts more power to him. But stress to him you paid to have an engine that will be able to pass emissions and actually be registered in CA. Even though that may not be stated in any contract that is the default position courts take. You did not buy an engine for it to sit in your driveway.

That being said. I would definitely try an oil change with the correct weight synthetic oil. Or Could be the cams did not like the Dyno and you would have better luck on the road.

Thanks.

I'm gonna change the current oil (whatever that is since the engine guy never disclosed) to 5w-30 Mobil1, with a new filter of course. Then, bring the car to the engine guy and say what you told me.

This is very annoying.

On a small possibility, do you folks know if Carmax buys PNO car? Or only cars with current operation registration?

I recently had the same issue with a 3.8 Borreo and was able to find the attached drive cycle that worked on the first try. Would be interesting to know if it worked on the 3.8 genesis as well:

This worked for me! Just did it in my 2009 Genesis that I had been trying to get drive cycle for months!

Nice!! Glad it worked for you. Wish Hyundai would put out a similar bulletin for thier cars. Dealers would probably complain they are taking a revenue source away from them!!

I need help 2010 genisis 3.8 coupe cant pass egr, I’m literally exahust with no options left what can I do?

Hi I have a 2009 Genesis 3.8 sedan, it has no faulty codes or any problems, but the California smog won't pass due to the EGR monitor not being ready, I have driven the car for about 400 miles and it still is not ready. I want to know is there a specific way i need to drive or how long should i drive for it to pass, Any help will be helpfull
Thanks
I had a bad battery and the computer lost all of the driving history. There are several approaches to driving in a way that resets all of the parameters. I bought an OBD2 reader for about $100. Plugged it in, and drove until all of the codes were green. Search "Drive Cycle".

2011 Genesis coupe says cat is not ready any ideas?
Too many to type out. Would you like to give a little more information to narrow it down to something reasonable?
