If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My new beauty decided to take a break today on I-290 in stop-n-go traffic! Both my hands were on the steering wheel. I'm too short for my knees to reach the START/STOP button and I was talking to a fellow Genesis owner on the hands-free phone. Traffic had come to a stand-still after being at a crawl for a while. When the cars in front started moving again, my car shut off, no overheating, no warning, no key removal. 248 miles on the ODO. The car was still in Drive and I could not shift to Park (wouldn't go). I put my foot on the brake and tried starting the car, nothing. After I turned on my hazards and started waving the people behind me around (about 60 seconds). The lights on the dash blinked which me think to try starting the car again. It started and I was back on my way with no other problems.

Scary! The dealership is all over this and I got a call back immediately (I left them a VM 2 minutes after this happened). Will post here what (if anything) is discovered. Thought this was worthy of documenting here in case anyone else has had this happen.

VERY scary. I hope this was just a weird fluke or an isolated incident. One wouldn't need this to occur more than once to shake their faith in their vehicle.

Keep us posted and best of luck!

You started it while it was in drive or in neutral? If you shift down to Neutral, you should be able to start it up no problem, but it doesn't start up in drive

That may explain why it didn't start the first time I tried, I may have been flustered, however, it doesn't explain why it shutdown. Trust me, I WANT this to be user error : ). I just can't think of what I could've done with both hands on the steering wheel and a foot on the brake. Key was in the slot. The other thing that was odd is that I could not change the gear shift to (P)ark - that was the first thing I tried.

What do you mean the "key was in the slot"? Putting the key in the slot is only for emergency purposes when the battery dies and you should keep the key in your pocket. Am I missing something?

Sure he mean the keyfob recessed position by the ashtray, its home bunker

For clarification I looked up the proper terminology in the Owners Manual, by slot, I mean the smart key holder. Sorry for any confusion.

Nothing in the manual suggests that the key should only be in the smart key holder in an emergency. In fact, when you put the key in the smart key holder it adjusts the steering wheel and seat (if you have set those options in the DIS for easy access)

By the way I didn't get a chance to make it in before the service department closed, so no update tonight, but on a good note no problems on my 2 hour drive on my return trip - also in stop-n-go traffic. I did spot this in the Owners Manual which is probably the culprit:

CAUTION When using a communication system such a cellular phone or a radio set inside the vehicle, a separate external antenna must be fitted. When a cellular phone or a radio set is used with an internal antenna alone, it may interfere with the vehicle's electrical system and adversely affect safe operation of the vehicle.

I had my iPhone hooked up to the AUX port (it receives email) and was actively using my Blackberry via Bluetooth. I will have to try to reproduce the problem at the dealership.

I doubt that's the problem. I smell lawyers at work on the owner's manual. I've had all manners of electronic devices in my car (including no less than 9-10 smartphones--car full of co-workers, each with a work and personal cell). I also have an iPhone 3GS that's tethered using the Hyundai cable.

I've had one mysterious failure in Drive, but it only happened once. http://www.genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=3321

I know you meant "smart key holder." I thought the holder is for emergencies only when the battery is weak (but I don't have the DIS).

It seems to me that if one has to insert the smart key in the smart key holder, that takes away from the convenience of having a smart key in the first place. I still wonder if that was related to the problem.

Nothing in the Owners Manual states that the smart key holder should only be used in emergencies. On my car when I insert the smart key the seat and steering wheel return to their last position. As to whether it is more or less convenient to use, that is a personal preference. Since I still have no idea why this happened, it is in the realm of possibility that it is somehow related to the smart key being in the holder.

My smart key is always in my pocket, never in the holder. From what I understand, in case the battery fails, placing the smart key in the holder allows the emobilizer to complete and therefore allows you to start the car. In short if your smart key fails this is the manual way t start your car.

Update:
Stopped in to Pugi today, my dealership for the Genesis (with no appointment) and the Service Manager and Dave N. got me right in. Danny ran some tests and there were no error codes present. While hopeful there might be an explanation, I didn't expect any problems to be found. When something like this happens you have to have it checked. If I figure anything out I will update here.

Hopefully, there are no problem on vehicle itself.
But we need to keep eyes on this post.

I had something similar happen to a brand new (at the time) Honda Accord. It was a real gremlin and happened infrequently enough that a dealer never found the cause. It once happened in the parking lot of a Pep Boys. It turned out to be a loose connector on the fuel pump of all stupid things. I was frustrated for months before the "very simple fix" was discovered. Back then the diagnostic capabilities were not what they are today. Hope they figure out what caused it in your case.

I had something kinda similar happen to me when i first got my Nissan Murano. back in 2006 i believe it was, when they frist came out, i picked up a new murano. While i was on the new york thru way, i was doing a good 85 mph, then i hit stop and go traffic. After about 5 mins of traffic it opened up and when i went to hit the gas......NOTHING. the car wouldn't go past 5 mph. I had to shut the car down and wait like 5 mins. After starting it back up it worked fine. itook it into service and they stated that they couldnt find anythig wrong with it but maybe it was the cvt. being that it was fairly new. I think it happened once after that, but never again.

I sit here today after dropping my 3.8 Sedan at the dealer for a mysterious engine power down in traffic. Yesterday, I was driving on an Interstate and had just exited when without warning of any kind, both the ESC and Service engine lights came on. The engine was still running, but I could not go faster that 5-10 MPH. I pulled over and turned the car off, waited a few seconds, and started it again. The ESC light did not stay on but the service engine light did. The car appeared to drive normally after the restart (except for the warning light and a slightly rough idle when I stopped at traffic lights. I took the car to the dealership this morning and left it for a diagnostic check. They called to tell me that they will have to replace a part related to the throttle body and are waiting for the replacement part. I'll know more when I get the car back.

BTW, I have a little over 10k miles on the Genesis and this is the first glitch of any kind I've encountered. I still love the car. And the Fairfax Hyundai service team ain't too bad either.

Just traveled over 1500 miles this last week with the family in the Genesis and coming home today after I exited the Interstate the transmission was stuck in 6th gear. The car was in D but I noticed the problem when I tried starting from a light and, well, it was in 6th gear so it took a while. I switched over to Tiptronic and noticed it was in 6th and tried downshifting. I drove the 10 miles home trying many different things like switching to Neutral and back to Drive also tried using Tiptronic, turning off electronics like music, etc. If it wasn't Sunday I would have driven right to the dealership in 6th gear so they could see the problem.
Finally, I was safely in my driveway after a long day of driving, I shut off the car and restarted immediately and the problem was gone.

Well, back to the dealership...

That is one of the weirdest stories I have heard about a Genesis yet. I would think the car would stall being in 6th at such a low speed. You must have had the smoothest acceleration in your life :p

It felt like I was dumping gas in the injection system with no resulting power output as a result. I am beginning to feel like a software beta tester with my 2010, now if I could figure out how to save a crash dump file so they could analyze these issues after just ONE.

Got the car back the next day as promised. The fix was to replace the throttle body actuator (as a warranty repair). All is well now.
