  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2012 spotted on the lots!

Mark, I am far from being an automotive expert, but in addition to shocks and struts doesn't a car's suspension also depend on how its computer is calibrated? Correct me if I'm wrong, but in addition to replacing parts shouldn't the car's electronics also be adjusted? And is this possible? I would like to think this is a simple fix, and I sure hope it is a simple fix, but I have a suspicion that improving the suspension on rough roads might be more complicated than just replacing the shocks and struts.
Obviously, if the Genesis has an active suspension that is electronically adjustable depending on road dynamics, or even driver adjustable, that would be the case. But the North American Genesis suspension is not like that (so far).

I can't say about the 2012 enhancements, but the 2010 enhancements consisted of different spring and shocks rates (softer springs and beefier shocks to compensate), and a beefier rear stabilizer. This information came from http://hyundaithinktank.com and other sources. The overall firmness between 2009 and 2010 is about the same (beefier shocks compensate for softer springs), but the 2010 doesn't bounce around as much as the 2009 where the springs overpowered the shocks. So there is not a change in the overall suspension (both 2009 and 2010 can handle the same load capacity). If all they had done was to make everything softer, then that could have caused a problem such as you are suggesting.

The specific differences between the 2009 and 2010 were discovered by some others who posted them on this forum previously. They looked at the shop diagrams on the HMA service website (http://www.hmaservice.com), and worked with a dealer parts person looking at the parts catalog to figure out which suspension parts had different part numbers from the previous year. There are different part numbers in some cases depending on V6 or V8 (the V8 and ZF transmission weigh quite a bit more than the V6).

I can't say if the 2012 suspension changes are going to be that simple, or whether they changed some other things in the overall configuration such as those you are concerned about. We should be able to find out in due time.

I am curious to know what Michelin tire they put on the 18" wheels. I suspect that it will have the Michelin Pilot HX mxm4 Grand Touring or Michelin Energy Saver Passenger both of which absorb road impact better than the OEM Dunlop Sport 5000M Ultra High Performance Tire. In that Hyundai has changed the tires I believe the suspension changes will be minor. I base my speculations on the fact that Hyundai put 19" wheels on the Equus but put a Grand touring opposed to an Ultra High Performance Tire on the car.

If anyone gets word of when we can expect the R-Spec in the Atlanta metro area please drop a line in this thread.

I guess that depends on what you mean by minor. The changes to each part (shock, springs, etc) may be minor, but the parts still need to be replaced to get the 2012 suspension.

Not sure what the Equus has to do with it, since it has a totally different adjustable air suspension.

That's what the dealers i saw yesterday said. They get the 2012s randomly. The one where i drove the 2012 v6 said he(the dealership general manager) could see a v8 coming his way through there computer program but wont know any details until his dealership is invoiced.

how is the new transmission 7?

Alkaizer,

I didn't notice much difference in my drive. I didn't do any highway cruising since i was mainly interested in the suspension feel on the bad roads. I did notice the same lag once you put the peddle to the floor, that was disappointing. I did not notice any gear hunting or anything like that either. It shifted very effortlessly.

Regarding the 8 speed transmission: when I test drove I found the shifts very smooth - even under hard acceleration. What was interesting to me was that when I put it in 'man-u-matic' (or whatever Hyundai calls it) it was a bit disconcerting to find myself in 8th gear and having to downshift multiple times just to affect the rpm range. Nothing wrong with this but it would take getting used to if you liked using the gear selector.

In addition to the above, I found the position of the shifter when in man-u-matic to be too far to the right to be comfortable. Though my guess is most people won't use it, I personally like to use the gear selector for added control and did not love the positioning of the gear selector.

Cheers,
Newman

newman are you a fan of the pre '12 suspension? Whats your review of the suspension in the 2012?

Am a bit ambivalent about the exterior cosmetic changes, but one thing for sure, the rear definitely looks better/classier w/ the "cutout" for the Euro-shaped plates.

I never drove the pre-2012 Genesis. I drove the 2011 Equus but that is a completely different animal.

I have read the copious reviews of the pre-2012 suspension and I can say that with the '12 I detected none of the issues with harshness in the ride quality that many have reported (on pre-12's). The ride was smooth with a good feel of the surface that I was on. I am personally a fan of stiffer, more sport oriented handling and will probably go after the R-Spec if I buy one. That said, the standard suspension was a really nice mix of sport and comfort.

Cheers,
Newman

Had my dealer perform a "vehicle locate" on their computer and all they saw was V6's. All the V8's and R-Spec's were still unavailable.

Panting heavily to test drive a V8 and R-Spec.

HAHAHA... I know my dealer is already tired of me dropping by and calling.

Why don't you try another dealer?

I agree about the backend. Looks classy to me. I like the more flared out grounded look. IMHO

LOL..... I called 3 in my area and 2 of them told me the 2012's were not even being shipped yet.... Dumb A$$'s.. They dont even know their own business.

They know. Number one rule of a salesman is that, if they don't have one to sell, they will tell you it is not available yet (or discontinued).

It irritates me that a salesperson doesn't have product knowledge and oftentimes my wife and I know more about the vehicle than the twit trying to sell me the car. I guess that's what the business has morphed into.

Tell me about it. I was introduced to the guy "with the most knowledge about the genesis" by the general manager. I was constantly correcting him. He didn't know the horsepower figures for the new 6 or R-spec, couldn't recite most of the changes/upgrades outside of what he could physically see. It was as if the first he heard of the 2012 was when it was pulled up from the backlot and he was only summarizing what he could see. Very sad. I don't really expect him to be an enthusiast with all the gritty details but, dude, come on...you are selling these.

Yep that's my experience also. I asked the service writter at my nearest Hyundai dealer about the changes in the 2012 yesterday "They (I assume he meant corporate hq) don't tell us about the changes in the new car" WHAT? so I went to the parts counter and the very polite clerk looked at his schematics and reported that the schematics for the 12 aren't out yet (probable) and there hasn't been any change in the suspension since the cars introduction! muy fustrante!

As Genesis enthusiast this car is a passion/obsession for us. For the odd salesman, service writter, parts clerk its just a job.

Can't tell by schematics, because they have been the same, even for the changes in made in 2010. What is different is the part numbers.

When I upgraded by suspension from 2009 to 2010 specs, it was very difficutl to tell the differnece in parts just by looking at them, so not surprising schematics are the same.
