  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2013 Genesis R-Spec...CarPlay add-on

Hey guys, this is my first post here. I bought a very lightly used '13 Genesis R-Spec w/ 85k last month and I am in love with this car! I'm amazed at how far Hyundai has come.

I'm an R&D engineer with an 12v OE-integration company, so I'm currently working on adding CarPlay/Android Auto into my system. This car has the OE knob control (with extra page buttons) and full OE Nav, so I'm adding Android Auto via the OE A/V input. I'd rather it be a digital connection, but I can make this happen pretty fast so I'm going to go this route first, for now. I got the image on the screen using a Chinese universal unit and it looks pretty decent for being low resolution. If this project generates enough interest, I will likely make T-Harnesses and make it 99% plug & play to offer anyone who wants a kit for this specific system.

So here's something interesting, the screen in this Genesis (8" monitor), is actually a touchscreen, but Hyundai is not using it as such. As you're probably aware, for OEM, everything is only controlled via the control knob on the dash. My guess is that they only use the touch commands once they added the 'i-Box' in the next generation Genesis (DH). The touch-screen commands are on the main radio CAN bus, which we've already mapped out. So if all goes to plan, this add-on piece will be controlled via knob-control and touch screen!

I'll keep you all updated on the project as time goes on here.

I was just wondering how this project turned out. I have a 2014 Rspec 5.0 (Black) & would be interested in getting mine done the way you described

Last I heard from him they are looking at a different hardware platform (PCB) so that it's more universal across multiple mfgrs, not only Hyundai. So unfortunately, nothing rolling with mass production as of yet.

Has anyone tried either one of these?
I installed this one:

Everything works except the reverse camera. Which I just installed the wireless one from their website. The sound quality is much better too.

How is the quality of the rear view camera? Anyone think about the Universal 360 degree camera? Wonder if you can add both to the system?

The quality is better than stock but it’s by no means 8K ultra HD 😂. I did think about the 360° camera but decided I didn’t feel like doing that much. Not sure if you could do both

My Seicane kit came today. Excited to install it.... hopefully tomorrow.

The other place never responded to questions while Seicane was very responsive. Was nervous as the Google reviews of Seicane made me concerned it was a scam site. At least the stuff showed up as promised.

Will update when I get done.

I am not having the easiest time getting this installed. Is what I attached similar to your factory units? I have the 2013 Sedan with Tech Package.

Having some CAN bus issues, which I think is a result of one of the pins coming out of their wiring harness. Three emails so far and the best answer I got was to put it back in next to the green wire.....above it, to the left of it, to the right? How about telling me what number pin it should be.

They are also telling me to use the RCA pre-amp output from their unit and run a cable to the center console and use an RCA to 3.5mm adapter cable and plug it into the AUX input in the center console....I'm like hell no, that is not acceptable.

How did the audio get from the existing head unit to the amplifier....let's follow that path.

Also, is the CD or DVD player (whatever version you have) dead? Is the navigation knob dead?

Post a picture of the harnesses that came with yours. As far as the console knob, it became a volume knob for me. And the directional presses change the song or advances and rewinds. The CD player/main unit does become dead. Currently trying to find something to put in there.

Sorry, not sure why I didn't see your reply to my question. I ended up getting the unit working with sound. I took the stereo RCA out cables from the unit and connected them to an input on the harness that goes to the CAN bus decoder device. I have a ground loop noise with this solution, I just need to put in a ground loop isolator. I'm not sure what type of signal goes to all the surround speakers in the car with this setup. I would have expected a digital out from the Android unit to the amplifier.

I did resolve some situations that were told not resolvable. I found an adapter to convert the factory GPS antenna to the plug that goes in the Android tablet. Same with the radio antenna. The other important "hack" I figured out was looking through enough pin outs, I figured out which were the factory mounted back up camera. I spliced in an RCA cable to those pins and was able to plug it into the Android unit. Works great AND I did not have to run a cable or install a new camera as the instructions told me to.

My challenge is the CAN bus settings. The HVAC kind of works. If you turn on/off the auto, the menu pops up and shows it. You will also see fan changes, etc. What is really frustrating is I can't seem to find a setting that works for the temperature settings. The cabin temperature always shows 63deg and there is no display for the set point temperature. Anyone have luck picking the right decoder to see the setpoint and actual cabin temp? WOuld be cool to see outside air temp too.

Steering wheel controls work great. The control knob works like you mentioned....volume and change track, etc.

Another bug for me is that the Android Auto freeze up. The screen freezes and the music will start skipping. This is very random... some times it never happens, some times it happens a lot. The wife's CarPlay works just great.

I have a 2013 Genesis 3.8 Sedan with Tech Package. I was never able to find a pin out that matched my car exactly. Piecing together info from other diagrams helped me solve for what my pinout were and then I modified the harness accordingly.

Thanks for your kind words! It wasn't without help, I can assure you. I work with some smart people and we've all been doing this stuff a long time

I'm in Florida actually, near Ft Lauderdale
Will it work for the 2016 3.8 sedan?

Unfortunately, no lol... we're at the same place as the last update

hopefully we will have it ready while you guys all still have these cars :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Following along, new owner. 2011 4.6 Sedan with tech pkg.

New owner as of June. Any updates on this project? @Silver5.0

I'd pay $x,xxx for this at this point, even if it's not a finished product. Let me know!!!

How do you connect this to your car stereo? Wired or wireless/bluetooth? I'm curious, and this looks interesting.

I have been looking at the replacement stereo setups on ebay and Amazon which are just a tablet with a launcher and the desired apps on it. Maybe an alternative is a Raspberry Pie with the launcher and apps loaded that would connect to our existing screen. Maybe there is a way to mirror our phone screen directly to the oem monitor?

I am hoping someone who is up on all the needed tech can noodle this and develop a functioning system.

Jeff
