  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2013 Genesis (Tech/Premium Packages) + iPod / iPhone Anomaly

Follow up post:

Apple has now called me on this issue several times trying to "resolve" it. The lady I was working with said she heard back from the engineering department and that it's a limitation of their iOS at this time, no workaround is currently available if your trying to use it via the lightning cable but it might be addressed during a future iOS update...I wouldn't hold my breath on this.

So I returned my iTouch, Apple lost a customer and I wrote a letter to their corporate office which will fall on deaf ears most likely. It makes absolutely no sense what they are saying, it's truly a simple fix and all they need to do is let you change what player you want as your default.

I understand it's an Apple product and some would argue that they never wanted you to use other apps for music....but with that being said don't make the apps available if your not going to give them full functionality on your device !!

/rant off ...lol.

As a person who has worked for apple in the past (and is a developer currently), I couldn't disagree with you more. To claim it is a simple fix is to not understand the complexity of the lightning authentication protocol nor in how applications function on the device. I have opened an Apple bug track on this issue, and have had six different engagements from Apple engineering to pull logs and other material together for them. I certainly am not trying to change anybody's mind here or be disrespectful to peoples opinions, but I for one believe whole hardily this will be addressed in a future iOS update. I can't think of an example where Apple has by design limited functionality to third party applications. Outright rejection of applications submitted to the Apple App store for violation of the design requirements, yes, but using the hardware to limit functionality to a third party application doesn't make since to me given the ecosphere Apple has created, and derives 3+ billion in revenue (2013) from.

I should have a new beta load of iOS 7 in the next few weeks, and it won't surprise me if I'm contacted against to see if it corrects the situation. I'll post back if my loyalties are well founded or not.

Also I wanted to ask, what the expectation (once this issue is resolved) for having an iTouch function in this environment. Since the iTouch doesn't have a cellular based network connection, you would be extremely limited in what you could expect the iTouch to play (from third party applications like Pandora, or Spotify.) I'm certainly not saying this issue is any less relevant to compatibility on the iTouch, I simply wanted to understand what apps you were looking forward to using outside of the built in iPod functionality?

As a person who has worked for apple in the past (and is a developer currently)... iTouch... iTouch... iTouch... iTouch...

While we're providing corrections, I would expect you, as a person who has worked for Apple and is a developer currently, to know that the product is called the iPod Touch, not the iTouch. As for the rest of your post, I agree: more often than not, those that rant about how easy it would be to make changes to code don't actually know just how much effort it would take.

Seriously this gets pointed out. Okay, here's my reasoning, I continued to refer to it as the iTouch for simplicity since it was already called an iTouch in the original post. Since everybody reading along already knew what the original poster was referring to, I saw no reason in potentially inflaming my post by adding the correction.

Spotify has an offline mode for premium users which stores the music locally on the device, it only requires to connect back to the internet once every 30ish days to update your subscription. The functionality of Spotify works 100% with Bluetooth and it displays everything correctly on screen, I'm not connected to the internet in my car and the WiFi is turned off. The problem is the lightning cable reverting back to iTunes music because it is set as the only application allowed to play via. the cable. Just allow people to set what they want for a default player.....Apple has unlimited resources at their disposal to make changes, it's a verified issue that is not only in our Genesis but several other car manufacturers including BMW. If you troll their forums they have the same discussions there as we do on this matter. I know it takes some time to verify changes etc. before rolling them out, the supervisor said she will keep in contact with me should a fix happen in the near future and I'm also free to call her if I haven't heard anything in a few weeks.

There was a "jailbreak" called Spotiplay that allowed you to use it with the cable which no longer works with the latest iOS update. If Apple makes a permanent fix I'll run right back out and purchase it again, it was convenient to have a player in the car at all times not slaved to my phone.

ok, so i haven't gotten around to buying the cable, even though i visited the dealer for a routine maintenance/oil change(which only the first one is free????, did my first one at 2000)

from what i read from the so-called apple employee, they, apple, is responsible for the malfunction? if this is true, it makes sense as they were in talks with various auto manufacturers to make a media center for their cars(various auto makers, not just 1 huge group).

i've jsut been BTing it and it doesnt bother me as much anymore, ever since i got my iphone, i've used it mostly for music and keep it updated(playlists). how much was the cable, btw?

I'm not convinced it's Apple actually. I recently had my Genesis in for the Version 7 GPS update and the dealership have me a 2014 Sonata loaner. What I noticed was the Sonata worked just fine with the Apple Lightning cable plugged directly into the USB port and played Pandora and other non-iPod music sources that all work fine. These same sources with this same lightning cable urged in to the USB port of my Genesis won't play (start then stop).

This all leaves me to believe its in the software on the Genesis. Keep in mind the Genesis uses a very very different (actually a modified version of Windows CE where the Sonata uses QNX Linux)

EDIT:

Nevermind--seems that the Hyundai cable is indeed special & required for the Genesis to treat my iPod as something other than a hard drive. Just ordered one for $6 & change (incl shipping) from a US seller on eBay.

Thanks,
-Jason

Howdy-

I've been poking around this forum, sifting through all of the iPod complaints, but I haven't found one that matches mine. "Hooray..."

I have:
2012 Genesis Sedan 5.0 R-Spec
iPod Classic 6th gen 160 GB

When I plugged the iPod into the USB port in the armrest console (using one of my cables--either a real Apple cable or a cheap knockoff), the stereo instantly switched to iPod & started playing something from my iPod.

I can navigate through folders, but they're all gibberish--they're all 4 characters long & made up of letters, for what appears to be albums & then tracks.
It looks like
DIAF
JEIA
IEJA
LEUP
QACG

Just random...

Any ideas on how to tackle this?

Thanks!
-Jason

My car is a 2012 Sedan 5.0 R-Spec. It does have the Lexicon system. I assume it has what you're calling the tech package--I think it's loaded.

I have an old iPod classic, which works. I don't have an iPhone, so I can't help you there.

Good luck,
-Jason
