  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hyundai is recalling more than 26,000 Genesis luxury cars in the U.S. and Canada to fix a water leak that can cause the transmission gear shifter to malfunction.

The recall covers cars from the 2015 model year. Water can leak into the rear light assembly. In rare cases that can cause delays in gear shifting or display the wrong gear on the instrument panel. The gear selector is connected electrically to the rear lights.

Hyundai says in government documents that the incorrect gear can increase the risk of the cars moving unexpectedly and causing a crash. The company says it has no reports of any crashes or injuries from the problem.

Dealers will install pads to stop the water leak at no cost to the owners. Hyundai will notify owners starting in April.

Didn't realize you posted this. Sorry.

Thanks for posting the info.

I called the service department at the dealership. The service employee stated that they do not have the parts in to complete the recall work and have no idea when they will be in.

Next, I called Hyundai customer service and spoke with a representative. The representative advised there is no remedy currently for the recall.
I enlightened her by quoting directly from the NHTSA website:

REMEDY:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will apply pads to prevent water intrusion into the combination lamp housing, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 128.

She replied "Oh. What I meant to say is that the fix should be available shortly."

I asked could she define the time frame for shortly and she stated, "Hopefully by the end of April."

I'm surprised since the recall was announced on February 19, 2015 and since the remedy has been announced, that these parts have not been shipped to the dealerships to date. Hyundai's definition of "shortly" is quite a bit longer duration than mine.

Has anyone experienced this symptom yet? By the way I have a 2015 AWD ultimate. Love my car. I came from a 2008 Audi A6 3.2 Quattro.

So that's what the problem is. Just started to experience some weird transmission shifts when I go from park to drive. Only happened twice so far but the transmission seemed confused for a split second before going into D.

There was moisture in the air both times - snow / sleet. Interesting.

My car was identified by my dealership as having this issue. It was originally diagnosed as part of a TSB in January this year but was asked to bring in my car last week for additional diagnostics. Looks like my car was the only one encountering this issue in the Toronto area and will be one of the first to get the replacement part when it arrives in April.
If your car is affected, you will start to see your tail lights flicker for no apparent reason.

BTW dealerships are doing these now. I had mine done earlier this week.

Thanks for the update.

Just out of curiosity, where did you test your VIN?

Would be nice if someone could post a picture of what they did.

Can't see it unless you disassemble your taillight. Aint nobody got time for that.

My new Genesis was just delivered this week. I searched that site with my VIN and they said there were 0 recalls. Would the recall not apply to ones purchased recently?

Heisenberg, there are two possibilities:

  1. Your car was built after the issue was discovered and "came correct" from the factory
  2. The dealer fixed it before delivery

At least one Hyundai dealer I deal with (Wiesner Hyundai in Conroe) told me that they almost had an assembly-line performing the fix the Genesis vehicles on the lot.
