Howdy - first post here.
I just bought a new 2015 Genesis 3.6 with the Ultimate Package.

I have searched the forum, but can't seem to find what I am looking for:

I want to see what my options are for replacing the wood trim with something else - grey/black plastic, carbon fiber - really anything that isn't brown wood.

They really did a great job on the interior styling/fit and finish, but I just don't get why I had no options other than brown wood for the dash/door panels.
It just takes away from the whole interior experience, which is 99/100 for everything BUT the wood panels.

I got an all black car, black leather seats, and a brown wood panel.

I see where people have posted "there are many 3rd party companies that make these parts that a google search can help you find" - I can not find a single vendor that sells replacement panels. And I looked!

Anyone know of any links they can send me?

I would even prefer the shiny black striped wood panel that was offered on the non-Ultimate package over the creepy matte-brown wood that is in my car. But that wasn't an option according to the Hyundai dealer (no idea if that is actually true or not...)

Thanks to anyone who has some ideas!

Randy

If you had selected the Ivory interior, then it comes with Matte Finish Black Ash Wood on the Ultimate. Unfortunately, the Black interior only comes with the Brown wood.

So it is theoretically possible to order the Matte Finish Black Ash Wood from your dealer parts department and swap it out. But not sure how difficult that would be, or whether it would be cost effective.

If you could actually remove the existing wood, you might be able to refinish it with a dark stain.

You could also order the Grey Woodgrain plastic that comes with the non-Ultimate trim levels, but again, no sure how easy it is swap out.

I uploaded the pictures for you. Normally you could link directly from your image pages but the pictures are too large to post. You can upload pictures to your album, then right click on them and choose image location. Copy image location and paste after clicking the insert image tab.

I agree with your dilemma which is why I went with the beige interior, I found the wood much more natural looking (it's actually what sold me on the car). Because the wood is open pore rather than lacquered finish, Mark's idea of having it refinished might work. On the other hand, you might get used to it after a bit of time has passed. I regretted my decision to get the car in black but it's really growing on me.

You didn't search very hard. Just Google "wood dash kit" and you can spend hours reviewing numerous vendors' offerings. Additionally, your local custom interior auto shops would be happy to give you some ideas. They install these dash kits every day.

The third party vendor websites don't appear to offer the OEM genuine matte wood finish found in the Ultimate package. The online vendors I have seen appear to be offering various veneers that have adhesive backing, and are designed to be applied ON TOP of the existing trim for easy installation, rather than removing and replacing the existing trim.
I am therefore curious to know whether anyone has asked their Hyundai dealer's parts & service departments whether they will sell us a different OEM Genesis wood trim (of our choice) and do the installation to replace the trim that our model came with, if we prefer to make a substitution. Has anyone already inquired and been given a cost estimate for parts and labor?

I'm sure the cost would be astronomical from the dealership. You'd be much better off having a local upholstery shop refinish it to something more appealing to you.

Additionally, very few people dislike the trim to the point of asking a dealer to replace it. I seriously doubt Hyundai has any kits available for a simple swap. removing the trim is no easy task and no dealer will want to deal with it so they'll likely price it extremely high if they are even able to do it.

The only way to know that is to ask the dealer parts department if the wood trim is sold separately, or if not, what assembly is required to get the black trim. There is no use guessing about that.

But it will expensive.

I wonder if Carls Bad, the original poster, has traded in his car? Where are you Carl?

yeah, no need to guess...I assume buying the parts directly from Hyundai would be incredibly expensive, assuming they price their interior trim parts like any of the other car mfgs price their stuff.

So hence my hope that maybe a 3rd party vendor would make them...

Maybe there is some confusion here. Why would a 3rd party company make replacement wood panels? How many would they sell? Do you even know what it takes to replace them in terms of labor?

I suspect that a 3rd party company makes stick-on veneer wood that could be used, but it may not fit exactly. Such stick-on veneers would be used to put on the plastic dash for those that don't have the wood-dash. If they don't make one yet for the 2015 Genesis, they probably will eventually. These are quite common for most autos, but the Genesis is not exactly a high volume car, so may be low on their priority list.

MinWax Polyshades comes in a "classic black" color and is designed to work on unfinished wood, or wood previously topcoated with a polyurethane-based finish. However, PolyShades is not recommended for use over lacquer. So it "might" work. It would be great if you had a sample you test it on.

Yeah, I think in most cases, 3rd party dash kits are designed as an upgrade from the basic plastic/bland trim or a facelift for an older vehicle. In the case of the Genesis any replacement kit would likely be a downgrade in terms of quality.

The upside to owning a Genesis sedan is that you rarely see one on the road. The downside is there's no market for aftermarket products.

As I said above Carls Bad, all you have to do is Google it. Your local custom auto shops install this stuff every day. Here's just one company's offerings.

It's not just a matter of upgrade or downgrade, but whether there are any slight differences in fit of a veneer kit that is designed to fit over the plastic dash, versus one designed to fit an existing real wood dash. Any differences would probably be small, but should be considered. But it appears that some vendors do make separate kits for either option.

I'll be damned, here's a side by side for comparison.

these are all helpful replies, and I appreciate the links.

I'm sorry but that looks like ass. It looks cheap & tacky... even gaudy - and really breaks up the clean lines that the car was designed with. Really reminds me of the gaudiness that Merc was doing not too many years ago. Pass.
