  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Soon we'll see 2015 new genesis here. I guess it'll be as high as 50K.
What do you think of comparing 2015 hyundai genesis to used germans.

1.2012 Audi A7 20K~38K miles
2.2012~2013 BMW 535i xdrive or 550i xdrive 20~38K miles

Price will be a bit higher in those two germans comparing to a new 3.8 genesis Htrac(I am assuming)

Please share your opinions.

A quick autotrader search in my area yields 2 2012 A7's both with mileage in your range and both right at $55k. In most states you would benefit from the tax value of your trade only toward a new car (about 7% of $20k for me) -- so count that against the used Germans as well. Throw in that most banks run 1-1.5% higher on interest for used car loans and you're talking about a serious price difference compared to the V8 Genesis, let alone the V6. I think the money argument clearly goes to the Genesis assuming they don't jack the price significantly.

I don't think the Genesis is truly competitive with the Germans on a few fronts though. I think it will be more compelling to potential TL/RL, GS/LS, M (err Q70?) and CTS buyers. The only German that gets close on price/performance/features would be the A6 3.0"T" vs the V8 Genesis, and that's only valid if you're comparing 0-60's instead of freeway passing or specifically looking for an 8cyl.

For me it will probably be new Genesis V8 unless they do something stupid with the US model in which case I will be looking at a used-loaded vs new mid-optioned A6.

My German car experience has not been good. Calculated together, my two high end Audis (A8 & S8) averaged $1,500 per month to own during every month out of warranty. That includes just repairs and maintenance. These were new cars only driven by me and serviced religiously. But this expense was not evenly spread out - it was $7,000 here, $5,000 there, etc., and almost always included towing and the inconvenience of loaner cars and disrupted personal and business life. Lemon laws didn't apply - the problems were all different. This was analogous to living with a take-your-breath-away pure sex goddess who went on knife-throwing spasms without warning.

My BMW experience was not as bad - however it brought on PTSD. My only good German car was a 1979 MB 6.9 sedan that I'll never forget.

The M cars, like the AMGs and Audi S models, are intoxicating to drive and look at. But being able to buy them and being able to own them are two very different things.

That 6.9 would be worth some bucks by now.

loved the analogy....so true, lmao!

I think the smart money is on the flood of fantastic Genesis '11, '12, & '13 models that will come on the market when you dedicated owners trade up to a new 2015. I think there will be some great cars available in the 2nd half of 2014. Too bad I already have a great one. Almost wish I was gonna be ready to buy one ...

But, who ever said that any car buyers were the "smart money"?

On a side note - I think that we will look back on 2010 - 2015 as a truly exceptional period for cars, much like the period of american muscle cars from the 1960's and early 1970's. There are so many phenomenal cars out today. And I count the Genesis among them.

++++++++ 1 ^^^^^^^ We are in auto's best of times for performance. In a few years we are mandated to be stuck with 54mpg crap.

All the more reason to run out an pick up a new G when they come out...:)

I finally took the leap and went to drive a R-spec last Friday after having another little piece of German technology go bad...again. This time it was the DSP amp on my E39 540i wagon. Second time for that.

Anyway - I drove the Genesis sedan and thought it had good power and no one disagrees that it looks nice but there were a few flat spots that either the dealer couldn't/wouldn't answer or that dawned on me only after getting back in my 5er.

1) Is the transmission adaptive? I've read complaints about slow shifting and although it didn't bang gears like a BMW SMG it was smooth and only seemd to lag a little on kickdown (understandable with 3 overdrives)

2) Can you seriously not in any way turn off the traction/stability control? Not a deal breaker here, but c'mon - you're selling a car to American men and tires aren't under warranty.

3) Steering, oh the steering - it is completely emotionless, has NO feel, gives NO feedback. Has anyone developed a pressure control device to greatly reduce the steering pump output? Is the pump belt driven or electric? I got back in my 5er and was immediately reminded how a sports sedan should feel.

4) the "leather" seats. This felt like it came out of a Ford Fusion. Based on the texture is it safe to assume this is "bonded leather" or some other barely-recognizable-as-animal-hide material? They just felt cheap. I've got a quote from one dealer to replace the leather with a color of my choice for about $1,000. Has anyone else experienced this and is it the same rubbery stuff or real split hide? I'd pay that to keep it black but have better materials.

5) Exhaust note - what exhaust note? Folks buying a 5-liter sedan don't want it to sound like a Camry - even at idle. Does the Borla system screw anything else up? What other options are there to have a voice to match the muscle?

6) Warranty stuff - what negates your warranty? Cat-back exhaust? Driving schools? Coilovers?

That's all I can think of. Right now I'm leaning toward keeping money going into the 5er.

Thanks.

This thread is about the 2015 Genesis, which is an all new design that will be available in the April to May 2014 timeframe. Some of your issues may be addressed with the 2015 model, although you could probably get the 2013 or 2014 models at steal (maybe up to $10K off MSRP).

Missed that "2015" part in thread title.

I'll try posting elsewhere.

Thanks.

Now that the '15 Gen's are in the dealerships (and charging at or over MSRP), this is a great question to revisit.

A new 2015 Gen or a used BMW/MBZ/AUDI where you're not tempted to "re-badge" anything?

Not sure if I would include the CTS with the latter instead of the former, esp. the CTS V-Sport.

It really has nothing to do with hiding the Hyundai name and if the Korean market did not offer wings all around I doubt we would be doing this over here.

Can't speak for others but in my neck of the woods the Genesis is a rare beast. Very different compared to lets say a C Class MB which are all over the place right up there in numbers with the most popular economical car. Removing the H and in my case the Genesis from the rear has people doing double takes and asking questions as they have no clue what type of car this is. Bentley, Aston, some exotic thing they have never heard of? It has more to do with exclusivity than anything else which usually demands an extremely high price. Gotta love it.

Correct, and there wouldn't be any wings to use if they were not OEM on KDM models. But for 2015, they reduced the number of flying H's that need to be replaced to just one (on the trunk). The 2015 now has wings on the hood, wheel caps, steering wheel airbag, keyfob, etc that had flying H's on 2009-2014 models.
