If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2015 Ultimate HTRAC and have been experiencing ignition starting issues. When I get in the vehicle, press the brake pedal, press the Engine Start Stop button the engine will not turn on. The Engine Start Stop button ‘On’ light will turn on along with all the electronics but not the engine. I can move the gear select to different gears. When I put the gear select back into P the engine will usually start. This happened to me 3 separate times in one day. The first time it happened was about 3 months ago. I am wondering if the Gear Select Switch sensor is going bad or something else. Has anyone else experienced this? Obviously it is giving me an uncomfortable feeling wondering if the car will even start at this point.

Some people have experienced loss of brake vacuum pressure, that prevents the engine from starting unless the brakes are firmly pressed. I don't know if that is your problem, but there are some other threads on that subject.

Thank you for the reply. I did have 4 new brakes installed 2 weeks ago. I have scheduled service for Wednesday and will see if that has anything to do with it.

I assume you mean new brake pads? Most people get about 75K miles out of the front pads, but it depends on driving style, and highway vs city driving percentage. It is very unusual to need rear brake pads for a 3 year old car, although maybe the H-Track has something to do with that.

It could be that they did not bleed the brakes correctly after installing new pads, making the brake pedal spongy, and the car is not properly detecting that the brakes are engaged before starting (which is a safety feature).

Yes I should have said 4 new pads. I have just over 82,000 miles and it was time to replace all 4 pads. This was the first time for pad replacement which I was happy they lasted this long as my Audi's would last about 40,000 miles. Since they replaced the 4 pads I have not noticed any issues but will definitely bring it up on Wednesday.

The engine won't turn over or it turns over but won't start? If nothing happens (won't turn over) when you depress the button, use firm pressure on the brake, then keep the button depressed for 20 seconds or so, many times this will engage the starter. If the problem doesn't go away or it won't start after 20 seconds, you need to see the dealer.

The engine will not turn over as in it will not even attempt to start. The engine just stays quiet and never tried to start. I will try what you mentioned next time that happens or should say IF it happens again. Optimistically thinking.

That may be a good idea to get the car started before going to the dealer, but no one should have to hold the button for 20 seconds before the car starts. I think the dealer needs to re-bleed the brake lines, and do it right this time.

I'm not experienced with Genesis, but here's a thought:
You might be able to confirm or rule out brake switch as the issue by having someone check to see if brake lights come on when you press the pedal. If they come on, it's most likely not the brake safety switch that is preventing start function.

I am not sure that they are as tightly linked as you are suggesting. Others have posted a similar problem where they had to pump the brakes to get the engine to start. The brake lights come on in varying degrees of brightness when the brake pedal is pushed, but the safety start system requires a fairly high level of braking pressure to start the engine.

Thank you and I will try all suggestions for trouble shooting before I get to the dealership on Wednesday. Thankfully it will start but yesterday is was about 75% of the time I pressed button. All good suggestions so far!

I have just experienced the same problem with my 2015. Get in, press the brake pedal firmly (pedal feels hard with no sinking) and press the start button. Dash comes alive, but no starting, not even turning over. Only seems to happen from a cold start - and it has been VERY cold here lately. Car is going in for service this week, so will see if they find anything. Brake lights work fine BTW.

It happened again this morning to me. I started the car with no issues with the temps around 28 degrees and went to the gym. I finished the gym and came out about 1.5 hours later and the car would not start. I pressed the brake pedal very very firmly and still no start. Pressed again and still no start. Pressed again and still no start. Pressed on the left side of the brake pedal and it started. Coincidence or issue. Not sure but still taking it in on Wednesday.

Can you have someone watch your rear brake lights when this happens again? Just to see if there is direct correlation with the brake light switch and the switch that determines whether you can start the car with sufficient pressure on the brake pedal.

I should have mentioned earlier that I did have somebody look at the brake lights and they do come on full intensity.

That's what I figured.

Quick Update. I did take her in for a technician to see if the start problem could be duplicated. They attempted over 10 times and every time it started up fine. They brought the car back to me to take home. I get in to start the car and it will not start. I froze and did not move, except to call the service advisor back out. He got the technician to run a diagnostic and short story is they are going to replace the inhibitor switch. Apparently the Sonata's and Elantra's have had more issues with this but not with the Genesis. I did purchase the extended warranty so it will cost me the $100 deductible which is fine as I am sure it will be a few hundred dollars for the parts and labor. The part is on order and once installed I will update.

The inhibitor switch problem also affected the Genesis in previous years.

Good information and I probably should have said not as many issues with Genesis BUT it does look like there have been from your post. Hopefully this will be solution.

This... is gonna be interesting.

I have been at work for almost a week. My car has been sitting in an airport parking lot during that time in minus 30 degrees C. Will be interesting to see if I have this problem.

I HAVE had the brake pedal be very stiff/not move when I went to start it before I went to work. However, the car started up fine with no issue. Just the brake didn't sink when I pressed on it.
