  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2015 Starting Issues

Quick Update. I did take her in for a technician to see if the start problem could be duplicated. They attempted over 10 times and every time it started up fine. They brought the car back to me to take home. I get in to start the car and it will not start. I froze and did not move, except to call the service advisor back out. He got the technician to run a diagnostic and short story is they are going to replace the inhibitor switch. Apparently the Sonata's and Elantra's have had more issues with this but not with the Genesis. I did purchase the extended warranty so it will cost me the $100 deductible which is fine as I am sure it will be a few hundred dollars for the parts and labor. The part is on order and once installed I will update.

Well, I am glad I am not alone with this problem. I just bought a 2016 3.8 AWD model two weeks ago, used with 43,000kms on it. Really nice car (and way more loaded than the BMW I was looking at). The car didn't start for me 3 days after buying it. The dealer said it was the battery, so I shelled out a few dollars for that (expensive, and wow what a huge battery). Two nights ago the car didn't start again BUT this time all the electronics worked and the lights all stayed on but the car just wouldn't turn over. I tried all the brake techniques, I tried holding the power button, switching the gears around to see if that work work - nada. So, got it towed to local dealership. Its still under the 5/yr factory warranty, so hopefully I don't have to spend too much money (if any at all).

I do have to say that this car is tremendous in the snow. Up in Northern Ontario, for the few days I was able to actually drive it, it handled like a champ. Better than the 2018 Colorado I just got rid of (POS).

Thank you for your situation and I hate to hear that. I meant to update everyone since I had the inhibitor switch replaced. I made it about 26 hours before it would not start again. The starting issue does not appear to be corrected and I am taking it back to Hyundai again. I was really hoping it was the inhibitor switch so I will be curious to see what they try next. I really do not want to find a different car as this one has been great with cost of ownership and features BUT I need to have a solid car when it comes to starts with the amount of miles I put on and having clients in my car. Fingers crossed.

Ah that is not so great to hear :S I'm keeping track of every time I need to use the Roadside. Geez I really hope your issue gets fixed and hope I don't end up taking this thing back and for the Hyundai every few days. That would be a nightmare!

EDIT:

So, my dealership looked at my car. Conveniently, it started and worked great for them. They did mention that the right battery terminal was loose and they had to reconnect it, but that really does sound like an excuse considering ALL my electronics and lights were working fine.

Ill pick it up and let it sit in the cold for a few days and see if the same issue re occurs.

Every time I start my car in the cold, the brake pedal is almost rock solid. As soon as it starts, I release the brake pedal. I then push the brake again and it always operates normally.

I wonder why this is...

I have not experienced that yet and hopefully I will not. I did take the vehicle back in for the technician to do more analysis. Surprisingly they were able to duplicate the issue again AND the car did something new.....it would not turn off when the Start / Stop button was pressed. The technician was talking directly to Hyundai / Genesis and they are going to replace the Instrument Cluster Fuse Panel. I think I got that right but when I get the receipt tomorrow I will provide the correct term for what they actually did. Supposedly Hyundai / Genesis has replaced this to be a solution in the past. Time will tell once it is replaced. Hyundai is paying for this since the last solution did not work. Stay tuned.....

Yah. I'm not sure if the brake pedal stiffness is a symptom of something... My car has not given me any grief at all.

I did read quite a few posts about older Hyundai models with the push button start that the brake pedal was an issue.

My car is working good now, however it hasn't been as cold as it was last week yet. So, I am happy at the moment :)

Lucky that you havn't had any issues. I have had bad luck this year. In June 2017 I bought a Civic Hatchback, my wife bought the sedan. I had issue after issue with the Hatchback - yet her sedan hasn't had a single problem. So, I traded that in, taking a hefty loss, for a 2018 Chevrolet Colorado. 25kms/3 weeks in, power steering failure. Had to get it towed back to Chevy. Then, the 4x4 would never engage properly, the heating would take 20 seconds to switch from cold to warm, it would vibrate violently when stopped - it was an awful vehicle and Chevy didn't give a crap about me or my problems. General Manager at dealership said I should consider myself lucky that I am having issues so early. Sooo I ended up getting rid of that and picking up my 2016 Genesis, and now these starting issues. So. Much. Fun.

I am kinda glad someone else is having these issues at the same time though, because it gives me more information to bring to my dealer - although I wish this wasn't a problem overall for anyone.

So cansat, have you had any issues since you got your car back from the dealership? You mentioned that a battery terminal was loose. That seemed to fix it so far?

UPDATE as of February 8th, 2018. Hyundai replaced the inhibitor switch on January 30th, 2018. This did not correct the sporadic starting issues. Hyundai then wanted to replace the instrument panel junction block. They replaced that February 8th, 2018. So far so good but it has only been 6 hours since the replacement. Hyundai said they have seen this correct the symptom in the past so hopefully that will be the same for me. I am happy that Hyundai picked up the cost of this otherwise it would have been about $935.00. I have 84,000 miles and an extended warranty with a $100 deductible. Hyundai said since I paid the deductible last time and the issue was not corrected they did not want to have me charged for another deductible. Overall still very pleased with the progress as electronic and technical things happen. It is all in how the dealership and manufacturer handle the situation. Hopefully no more issues and IF it does I will let you know.

No issues. They said they had to slightly 'modify' the clamp to the terminal because they used a third party battery, to ensure it was as tight as can be.

However, like I said above, I will try to start the car late at night when the temperatures reach -18 C of colder to see if it starts. That should be this weekend at some point.

Sounds good. Hope all is well. Keep us posted.

Well, its been -20 C here and my car has started perfectly everyday since last posting. I still don't really believe it was the battery, but I guess I have no real reason to not believe that since my car is working great!

The good thing is you are starting good!! Since the last service and replacement of the instrument panel junction block all has been good. Keep our fingers crossed there are no more issues.

Good to hear.

Even tho I haven't had any issues, I will make sure my battery clamps are tight and good to go.

Here is the latest as of February 26th, 2018. The replacement of the instrument panel junction block did not correct my starting issues. It took about a week for it to happen again but then every couple of days the car would not start. I called Hyundai / Genesis care and opened a case. I took the car back to service today. The outcome today was the following. 'Shop foreman finds connector pin in harness to shifter interlock area / gear selector out of alignment. Adjusted pin and OK at this time.' Of course I will let you know if this actually corrects it or if there is another remedy. Stay tuned....

Sorry to hear that the saga continues. Hopefully that was it.
