2018 Genesis G80 Sport Trim Debuts With 3.3 Liter Turbocharged Engine

I can't see it priced like a CTS-V. You are talking 100K!! I'm thinking it should come in around 75K.

The CTS-V starts at $85k... The M5 starts at $94k and the E63 AMG starts at probably over $100k. If Genesis Motors is going to bring us a twin turbo V8 - it's going to be priced like the lower end CTS-V.

$75k would be great but I don't see Genesis Motors remaining a 'bargain' luxury brand at that point...

I've decided to hold off for this. Can't wait!

Love the look of the G80S! It may come down to that carbon fiber dash for me, I'll have to see it in person.

It'll be a fun decision come spring deciding between a G80 5.0 or G80S.

Media reports say the 2018 G80 Sport will come in spring of 2017 (April to May). I spoke with several Genesis dealers who stated it will be more like August to Sept 2017. I was told that Genesis will need to produce about 4000 cars then they mass ship from South Korea over to the USA porting in Portland, OR. G80 Sports produced in April 2017 takes about 3 months to finally hit the dealer lots.

I did not want to wait and found a 2017 G80 Premium and Ultimate packaged car at $1000 below dealer invoice, so I jumped on it. Paid $50,127 total. I wasn't sure what the price points would even be on a Twin Turbo V6, amd a new model year price increase, so I decided to make the move as I wanted a pure luxury sedan. New 2017 G80 gets transported to me from Colorado this coming week. Patagonia Blue w/ Ivory interior.

I think you are ignoring the fact that Hyundai (Genesis) entire marketing model is to built cars that are a solid 25% below the prices of the cars that they otherwise compete against in features and performance.

Considering that the Genesis is still struggling to gain respect and sales, they are nowhere near ready to be priced with the big boys. Even Lexus can't do it. Sales of the GSF are pathetic because they priced it too high.

Should compete much better with the GS350. As for pricing, totally agree...Hyundai/Genesis doesn't have brand cache to demand a higher price. Very much reminded me of the LS400/Q45 releases in '89/'90. People had no clue about how much effort was put into these cars, let alone how reliable they would be. Although, competing against Cadillac/BMW/Mercedes Benz reliability was nothing but laughable. Now Hyundai is knocking at Lexus' door...

Although I bought a G80, I found that the Audi A6 had a better ride and the Lexus GS has better reliability. But the G80 has the best bang for the buck.

A6 is more comfort tuned. You can alter the ride on the Genesis by just changing out the tires. The GS is more reliable, but its navigation system and joystick ended it for me. Just too distracting.

If that's Genesis' marketing model - to build cars that are a solid 25% below the prices of the cars they compete against - than perhaps you're right - and the high performance version of the G80 will start at $75k. You don't know how HIGH I'd jump for JOY if that were to happen. While I think it's unlikely - I know it's not impossible. Let's just say I won't hold my breath but I'll keep my virtual fingers crossed. :)

I don't know if I'd consider Cadillac to be priced "with the big boys". Not really. They even admit to being a "near luxury" brand just a year or two ago. They're not really "there" yet. So if Genesis were to mimic Cadillac pricing, I'd be cool with that and wouldn't be surprised. That's still better than Lexus pricing. The GS-F - who'd they BUILD that for? It doesn't compete with ANYTHING. I mean - it's not an M5, an E63 AMG, an RS6... What market is it going for? I'm pretty sure it's not selling because, as you mentioned it's priced too high - for what it is... If "F" is supposed to be their "performance" division - than why is their midsize "F" competing with the Cadillac CTS V-Sport (not "V-Series") and cars like it? I think they made a mistake there.

On the other hand - I understand WHAT it is they're doing. They're giving people who want a V8 with good performance an option at Lexus. But I think they should have kept the "F" off of it...

All things being said, if they did come out with a G80 N with a V8 Twin Turbo and 600 ponies, who would jump on it no matter the price? :-) On the real, when are we look at this, 2018 Model with a release in the fall of 2017?

I'd love to sit and talk to you about it. Sometimes I'm too impatient to give the full response I'd really like to, and right now I'm sitting at a Starbucks on my iPad before heading to a business meeting. So pardon me if my response sounds a little abrupt.

There is zero reason Genesis shouldn't be able to take a car that is loaded at $55k and has decent "bones" with a solid 420hp V8 and an equally solid suspension and chassis, add 100+ hp with either turbos or a supercharger, tweak the suspension, and add some better rolling stock and brakes for $20-25k. They are all about value and being VERY patient breaking into markets with value.

A CTS-V is essentially a $90k car, GSF $87k and everything else with that kind of power is over $100k.

Do I think they can and will - yes. Heck, the new Sport is a good start to getting the enthusiasts attention. I think it's looks are dead on the money. I'm a little dissapointed that it will not be offered with the V8 as an option, but from what I'm reading it may actually be priced below a loaded 5.0, so they will have that going for them if it is.

The Cadillac starts at 87k, I went online to build one http://www.cadillac.com/v-series/cts-v-sedan/build-your-own.html#/trim (trying to be cheap) and when I was done it was 105k, if that's not M5 or AMG territory, I don't know what to say. I do agree, they should be able to take the G80 Sport and add a V8 Turbo/SC engine and a few other performance and handling upgrades and keep the price around 80k or maybe even 75k. My concern is I have a big milestone birthday coming up in July and I want to gift myself something nice. If I have to wait another 6 months after July I will, but not much more than that. Can I still visit this forum if I get a 2017 Camero ZL1 :-)

If I could afford it I'd buy it just to be unique. I'd rather have something different than the M5, E63 and CTS-V. But the G80 would have to perform like these other cars. Not like the GS-F. If I'm going to get a fast car - I want it to be competitive with other fast cars.

They can definitely MAKE it for that price. $75k would be fine and make them plenty of profit. I just have the feeling they're going to be beyond the "Buy us! We're cheaper!" phase by the time a high performance G80 rolls around. The CTS-V is a bargain for what it is. You're getting a hell of a lot of car there for $87k if you're okay with the base version. If Genesis Motors can do something similar for $75k - mark my words - "Genesis" will become a phenominon and the G80 would/could be the best enthusiast/tuner car of all time...

I built a BMW M5 to $135k and the E63 is generally about $10k more. So if $105k is in the same territory to $135k and $145k - than we just have a difference in opinion. No big deal. You can get into a CTS-V for about $10k less than an M5 and $20k less than an E63. $75k might make sense for a high performance Genesis G80 but I think by the time we can actually buy one - Genesis will have established itself enough to play in the same league as the next cheapest luxury performance brand in the game - Cadillac.

I have a feeling we won't see this car until after the new crossovers are available. I'm thinking not until the G80 is redesigned for it's next generation. If you get a ZL1 you better come here and brag about it every so often. :p

I'll get one, just not buying new.hyundai screwed us 2015 buyers, fool me once

Old thread, but I don't understand why anyone wants this motor over the silky smooth 5.0. I have owned turbos, and they are noisy. When they hit you get lots of torque but I prefer the more stable powerband of the V8, which is more powerful overall. Turbos' are for sports cars.

If they turbo charged the V8 and made 600 flywheel that is another story, but I do not see the advantage of a 3.3 liter with forced induction for a luxury oriented car.

Evidently you did not drive the right turbo's. My BMW 535i with a 3 liter twin turbo is very smooth, not noisy at all and powerful and gets better gas mileage than my Genesis V-6. Europe has more turbo cars than the US because they are lighter than larger engines and offer better gas economy with no sacrafice in power. This is the future. Future EPA gas mileage requirements will only accelerate this trend. The European Diesel turbos are amazing.

One factor is weight, the V6 is a couple of hundred pounds less that the V8 and that weight comes right off the front axle which helps handling. There is also a slight fuel economy benefit.

I like the V8's from a tradition and long term reliability perspective, but the new smaller turbo engines are impressive. It will be very interesting to test drive the 3.3t sport.
