3.8 Coupe vs Sedan Intake Manifold

Anyone else notice that the Intake manifold on the 3.8 sedan is plastic and the intake on the 3.8 coupe is aluminum?

Anyone know why? I am guessing weight? But are there any other performance differences between the two ?
 
Can you take pictures? Strange the difference. What about the air box in the 4.6?

I can provide a pic of the 3.8 Sedan tomorrow , but the 3.8 Coupe I looked at was a dealer demo I took for a spin when I got my oil change. It had an aluminum intake manifold.

Maybe someone with a Coupe can chime in on this.

Man I so want a Coupe, This was the owners demo and he had installed a SprintBooster and it was soo easy to loose the rear end, it was awesome!
 
Hyundai had to redesign the intake manifold for the 3.8 Lambda RS engine to improve airflow and increase the engine noise that it makes when accelerating. The plastic intake for the sedan decreases the engine noise. The 3.8 engine in the Coupe has one of the best sounding stock V6 engines I've ever heard.

I don't see why it shouldn't. The intake/exhaust and a slightly better tune are about the only difference between the sedan 3.8 and the coupe 3.8. So if you are looking for an easy upgrade - Get the coupe intake manifold and slap it on the sedan.

Also, from a mechanical standpoint, there are quite a few differences between the 3.8 in the sedan and the 3.8 in the coupe:

different intake valve timing
different intake camshafts
slightly more aggressive exhaust valve springs in the coupe
different pistons & rods
different oil pumps

The list goes on...these are completely different engines

Not really. Besides what you mention the engine is still physically the same in dimensions. The lower IM is shaped exactly the same on both vehicles. So replacing the intake manifold would be fairly simple. The only problem would be the MAF and throttle. They are essentially exactly the same, but output back to the ECU at different frequencies. So just make sure you use the sedan's MAF and throttle and you'll be good to go. The Coupe manifold allows quite a bit more airflow so i'd say it would be worth the effort. The only problem would be that you wouldn't be able to use the stock Sedan airbox anymore either, or be able to fit the engine cover back on. However, get the RMR SRI and you should be good to go. No one really cares about stupid engine covers anyways.

Ok...physically, this may be possible, i'm not sure and don't particularly care. The point I was trying to make is that the intake monifolds were designed specifially for the different engines. Believe me, these are fairly decieving, as they are very different from one another. If you want to waste time and money sourcing another intake manifold just to "see what happens," that's certainly up to you. How do you think the PCM is going to react to open circuit signals on the VIS system? If you want the car to perform worse than it does in stock format, go ahead. the fuel and ignition curves are not based off of this manifold, so that may cause some funny business, what about ETC codes popping up along with the forced limited power (limp home)? I understand your theory, but I promise you that these cars are not modded that easily. The management software is very sensitive; yes, it will automatically adjust to certain variables, but only so far. Honestly, if you are looking to extract a little extra power or tone from the engine/exhaust note, why not find a less expensive alternative like a drop in K&N (not sure if they're available yet). How about looking for an opened up exhaust?
