  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

3.8 oil change questions

So I picked up a new oil filter and it comes with three o-rings and the crush washer. I can see where two of the o rings go, but where does the third go?

It's confusing, I know. Initially they had different part numbers and gaskets for 3.8 and 4.6. To make is simpler:confused:, they combined the two. The first rubber o ring goes to the filter housing, no brainer. Second crush washer obviously goes to the oil pan drain plug. The third one is V8 specific and goes on the drain plug for the filter housing. The Last one is V6 specific and fits on the neck of the oil filter. It will become obvious to you when you remove the filter housing. But if you are giving it to Jiffy lube, don't count on them taking the time to figure out the differences between the two gaskets, because the V6 one is "fatter" than the V8 one.

Okay, that makes sense. Do we not have a DIY for this yet? I can make one when i change the oil next.

I think there are a couple. Not sure if they are for V8 only. Do one anyway, can't hurt, although some people may argue with you about the oil amount. Seems to be 5.5 is showing high, but is factory recommended and people have been taking it upon themselves to read the dipstick literally and putting in only 5qts.

I've owned a lot of cars over the years (Swedish, German, Japanese and American), but changing the oil in the Genesis is amazingly easy. It's almost as if the vehicle were designed with the the owner/mechanic in mind. For example, my Volvo and 350z require removal of pan beneath the engine (and about 20 bolts) to drain the oil. Hyundai engineers provide a small opening in the Genesis pan for drain-plug access. Changing the filter is another nice touch - easy access and no oil dripping down one's arm and all over the floor. It's thoughtful details like this that makes Hyundai a strong competitor in the auto business.

I recently had the dealer change my oil. I gave them 6 quarts of Mobil 1 to use and they gave me back one unopened quart. Problem?

Check your oil level. It takes just over 5 Qts. completely drained.
