I've had the Magnaflow for almost a year now and was initially disappointed by the amount of rasp over 3.5k rpm; the drone was pretty terrible too. I added a resonator on each side which eliminated the rasp and drone, but also any sounds of an aftermarket exhaust. I've notice that rasp isnt really apparent on youtube videos (for Magnaflow or Borla).

To the borla owners, is there any rasp from the borla exhaust? I figure there will be some drone, but I felt the Magnaflow was on the high side.

IMO the Borla exhaust is about as sweet as it gets. They developed the exhaust and the muffler specifically to this car. I've had my prototype installed for over a year now and im still thrilled. Almost NO drone unless I'm in 6th at 1800 and going up a 8% grade and push into the accelerator. At flat cruise it's pretty quiet inside the cabin. when I jump on it, it explodes with a throaty growl. Check out youtube for sound clips btw it is 50lbs lighter than stock and adds a dyno proven 22 torque AT THE WHEELS. I haven't heard the Magnaflow system on the Tau but I get plenty of complements on the Borla system. check out this thread for extended info on the cat back sys.

Not sure how you're getting any raspiness?? I have MagnaFlow mufflers with no rasp at all, but there is drone at low RPM. You might want to inspect your exhaust for leaks or possible damage.

I was suprised about the rasp too. I never found any owners mentioning anything about rasp. I checked multiple times, different shops, and definitely no leaks. Maybe just a dud, the rasp was terrible though. Nothing like a V8 rasp, but more of a super tinny tin can.

I just ordered the Borla from amazon for $1006 shipped from Amazon.

when you get it installed give us your impressions // comparisons between the two systems....

Dru, you just spent more money? Over a $1000? Did you see my "electric exhaust cut outs" thread? Don't mean to hijack your thread, but your problem would be solved for less money and best of both worlds with exhaust you can adjust from stock quiet to loud whenever you want. Never drone.

I like your exhaust purchase and think it will sound good! Good luck with it.

I was actually really close to purchasing cut outs from DMH a few months back, but after doing the research and reading about the common problems (all brands, DMH just has best warranty), I ditched the idea. I spend a lot of driving near saltwater so its either broken motors, or exhaust leaks to to the flap corrosion.

My plan was to put cutouts on after the glasspacks I had installed, before the mufflers. The glasspacks dropped the tone much lower and sounded more terrifying than open headers.

Borlas are on, huge upgrade over the MFs. I will follow up with a review soon.

Houston area people interested in my old MF, let me know ASAP, will sell for cheap or the shop will throw it out.

This review may be late in the game with the newer body styles out...

Drone
MF: The drone sweet spot was pretty large in the RPM range. This caused a lot of drone while doing any type of driving.
Borla: The drone sweet spot is a lot smaller. It still drones, but for much shorter moments when driving. With this smaller drone range, it is a lot easier to drive while avoiding drone.

Sound
MF: Has a great deep rumble pre 2Krpm, but sort of sounds ricey beyond that. There was also this tin can style rasp WOT behyond 2.5k rpm. It was pretty embarassing to drive. The exhaust, sadly, reminded me of a 4banger with a bad exhaust.
Borla: Solid sounding, completely different from the MF. It is a lot raspier, but V8 raspy. From low rpm, to high, the exhaust seems higher frequency than the MF, but it has a nice v8 raspy tone. This exhaust sounds like serious business.

Fit
MF: Hands down easier to fit. The clamp allows for perfect installation.
Borla: Fit sucked, both mufflers tips were flush against the inside bumper cutout. The shop put a piece of 2.5 tubing to push the mufflers apart and welded it together. Left side sits a tad lower. The right chrome tip was also banged up, this was a Borla problem, not shipping. The muffler tip was wrapped in the foam, and the foam and box was in good condition.

Final note, you will never get a good feel from the sound of youtube videos. Just buy the Borla, fork out the cash, be happy.

Why not? I think many videos are accurate and precise on the sound as long as the video wasn't recorded with a shoe.

If you're listening to it through your computer speakers, than you have discovered the problem.

P.S. I'm a fan or Borla, but they're too loud for me and a little raspy

To each their own. The problem i have with youtube videos are the differences in camera/sound recording qualities, mic placement and environmental factors.

I have a fantastic pair of headphones I use. I'm sure that's not the problem.

Last call on my old MFs. Gonna throw them out if there's no interest.

what type of finishers did you go with? MF 14832's ?

DRU,

How do you like the Borla system over the Magnaflow? Inside the car with the windows UP which one is quieter?
how about the butt dyno which one FEELS FASTER?

BTW have you revved it in an over pass with the windows down?

~B

Windows up, the interior noise (to me) is all about the drone and low freq noise levels. The drone levels are probably the same, but the MF droned more across low RPMs. So i guess i would sum it up to the Borla being quieter. I can def say that highway crusing is a lot more quiet with the Borlas over the MF.

As far as my butt dyno, with bias, the Borla feels faster. haha. To be honest, which doesnt mean much, the MF felt faster than stock, and the Borla felt faster than the MF. After a few weeks with the Borla, my car still feels like a boat.

Underpass, windows down, awesome. I live in Texas though, having the windows down this time of year, is dreadful.

Without sounding like a skeptic, does one gain measureable (read significant) impovement in performance with the addition of a MF or Borla exhaust system? Granted their sound is different and sometimes annoying (in the case of MF), but are these systems any more than noise makers?

^ I do believe Borla has been Dyno'd for an extra ~20 hp to the wheels.

Unlike a 4 cyl, V8's really thrive from having the intake and exhaust opened up :)
