If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Just a heads up, I checked my oil level this morning on my 2015 5.0 Ultimate and found it to be 1 quart low. I am hoping this is just due to the break-in of the new motor. Will monitor up to first oil change and report back if any abnormal oil consumption. I have been washing my car every weekend and have found no evidence of black deposits on the exhaust tips.

Can you describe your driving habits during the break-in period (0 - 600 miles), and also 600 - 2000 miles?

I followed the suggested break-in per the manual. Kept it under 4k RPM's for the first 600 miles. During that time period I did not use the cruise control. Since the break in period I have been using ECO mode and getting on average 19.8 mpg back & forth to work. I have used the sport mode a few times on that on ramp but besides that, ECO mode the rest of the time.

This is my first GDI engine so not sure how the break in period of the motor reacts compared to normal engines. Any idea?

The break-in instructions call for RPM to be between 2000-4000 RPM (when feasible), and not just less than 4000 RPM. The major cause of poor piston ring seating (the main cause of excess oil consumption on new cars) is trying to "baby" the car during break-in. Also, if you have synthetic oil (which I normally recommend), it might be best to switch back to conventional oil until you hit 5000 miles, and give your engine a better workout (take out of eco-mode).

Still using regular oil. I'll keep it in Sport model for the next 2000 miles and see if the consumption improves.

Drive it like you stole it. Break it in hard after the first couple of hours of operation. And don't worry about it . If its not burning blue smoke from the tail pipe its no big deal . Every car I have had (since I am ocd )and check constantly and when I mean check I pour the oil out of the oil pan when I change my oil into a Pyrex measuring bowl after all my synthetic oil changes and keep records of consumption. The worst was my wifes Nissan murano that used 3 qts the first 6 thousand miles now uses about 1/2 qt every 3 thousand . The best was my fj used about 12 ounces every 3 thousand miles cant tell yet on my Genny yet because I have changed it at 500, and 1000.

It will be in Sport mode starting tomorrow and I can't wait :D I will put my fuel test on hold until after my first oil change.

Update:

Kept it in Sport mode for a full fuel run. Had numerous Red Light, Redline, Hole shots :D over the course of this test and I must say, much more fun than ECO mode for sure :D

Note to self: Make sure car next to you is not an unmarked cop :D

Burned 1 full tank in Sport Mode using Mobil Super Unleaded and got the following fuel mileage:

Onboard computer - 18.90 MPG
Calculated mileage - 17.40 MPG

This morning I filled it up with Mobil Regular Unleaded fuel. I will keep it in Sport mode and report back to see if there is any difference in fuel mileage on this fuel run. Next I will switch back to ECO mode and due the same test to see if there is any benefit in using Super Unleaded. One this I did notice when I washed my car is that my chrome exhaust tips were showing signs of black deposits. Cleaned right up but I did not have this when babying the car in ECO mode.

Better to have carbon on your exhust tips then in the motor. High rpm blows all that sh$t out. Mac

Good point. Better to have hit the rev limiter that not :D

Did you check oil level when you took delivery or are you assuming your dealership topped it off to the full mark before you took delivery?

Beat me to it. Gotta have a baseline.

Do you think it would be a good idea and or raise eyebrows when picking up your new car you requested an under the hood fluid check?

I have never heard of a new car that did not have the proper amount of engine oil from the factory. Maybe I am wrong about that.

Proper amount is anywhere in between add and full. However many seem to think it must be as close as possible to the full mark which is not the case at all. Compare this to temperature gauge with a normal operating range, the area between add and full is exactly that. ;)

That being said, I have never pulled the dipstick on a brand new car.

You have a valid point Midnightsun. I did not check it and should have specially after reading all the issues with the previous generation oil consumption.

^^^ lets hope that is the discrepancy. And not another round of oil drinkers.
