Purchased a new Silver 2010 4.6l Genesis w/ Tech in December 2010 and just wanted to share my ownership experience so far. Almost up to 60k miles and below are the issues I have encountered. Wanted to see if anyone's ownership experience has been similar or if I ended up with one built Monday morning right after a long binger ;)
I change my oil religiously ever 5k miles and follow the manual for regular maintenance. I am coming close to the end of the warranty period and am worried about owning the car past the warranty period.

Issues fixed under warranty:
-> Lexicon amp went out and had to be replaced
-> Front parking sensor gave up on life and had to replaced (btw if one goes out the entire front array gives up)
-> Steering wheel movement controller has been replaced twice due to wheel not moving up and down anymore
-> Entire steering wheel has been replaced due to leather peeling
-> Memory module has been replaced due to both seat and steering wheel being stuck in place
-> Seat rails have been replaced due to seat moving back and forth under acceleration and breaking
-> Replaced stalk/controller for lights due to flickering lights and headlights turning off completely when turn signal is activated
-> Lumbar support on driver seat had to be fixed due to it seizing

Current issues not yet fixed:
-> Steering wheel memory module not working so the steering wheel always starts off in my crotch area when I turn on the car
-> Driver side fog light bracket broken so fog light is not secure anymore

Some additional observations
-> Car goes out of alignment every 10-15k miles
-> Alignment issue causes the car to eat tires like they are made out of butter. I am on my third set of tires and second set of Continental DWS (I think those should last longer than 30k miles)
-> Leather on seats almost immediately started wrinkling and stretching and looks very poor on the driver and passenger side seats. I don't have a lot of rear passengers so those still look pristine.
-> DIS control knob feels pretty loose and felt a lot tighter and clicked more securely into place when it was new. I mainly use my steering wheel controls now as I am afraid of wearing it out.
-> At slow speeds like when stopping and then subsequently accelerating at a stop light the transmissions gets confused easily and likes to hammer in that first gear very abruptly.

I am not trying to dissuade people from this car but just wanted to share and see if anyone has a similar ownership experience.

Now where were you on this thread?!

http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=14218

Reading this makes me queasy about just buying a Genesis!

That's pretty crummy reliability. My last new car purchase was in February 2000 (a Nissan Maxima). In 14.5 years, I've done the following:
* under warranty at 30k miles, all ignition coils (design defect...nearly all 2000 Maximas had this done)
* rear brakes 3 times
* front brakes 1
* radiator in 2009
* starter in 2014
* alternator in 2012
* muffler in ~2006
* exhaust (again) in 2012 from cat on back
* one O2 sensor in 2013
* one MAF sensor in 2011

That's it. Nothing else.

I just turned 34,000 miles on my 2012 and have had only one issue, a tire ruined because of a foreign object on the road. The oil & filter are changed every 6,000 miles and the cabin and engine air filters were changed at 24,000 miles. The tires have been rotated several times and the three originals have 7/32 tread on them as measured by Discount Tire. I am fighting the urge to look at the 2015's while saying leave well enough alone. This one is paid for.

Having read almost all of the posts on this forum since Jan 2009, I would say the following about other member's experiences:
  1. Lexicon problems were common for early models of Genesis, especially on Tech Package. Lots of head unit and some amps replaced under warranty.
  2. Steering wheel movement controller problems were common. This was a defect that was fixed under warranty and usually did not reoccur on most models from what I can tell.
  3. Alignment/suspension problems were common, especially for 2009-2011. This includes complaints about OEM Dunlop tires. Major suspension upgrade in 2012 and fantastic suspension upgrade in 2015.
  4. Leather seat stretching complaints are very common. Some people fix this with a hair dryer. Design flaw and not really a defect.
  5. Transmission acceleration from rolling stop can be jerky. There were some TSB's for this, so make sure you check with your dealer if still under warranty.

Then consider this - I bought my 2012 R-spec in December of 2012. It went back to the dealer exactly once for a nav map update. That is the total number of snafu's I've had (other than my own ignorance such as leaving the trunk lid open and draining the battery).

Life is a crap shoot. Somedays you eat the bear and somedays the bear eats you. I'd consider car models on the overall reliability and not one isolated case.

So far the Genny has been as reliable as my 2000 Toyota Avalon - the most reliable car I ever owned (but it's a lot more fun to drive).

Car is currently at the dealer to look at this steering wheel issue. They can't figure it out and are talking to Hyundai Corporate Tech. Will get a loaner overnight. Hard to believe it will take the dealer 2 days to figure this out. Well at least not much can break on my base Sonata loaner :eek:

Perhaps I have a Monday built Genesis, but I'm still very satisfied with it.

At around 3,000 miles, had an undercarriage rattle that was difficult to reproduce with the service tech (but easily heard on my daily commute). The tech didn't just blow it off, spent an hour looking under the car, and ended up tightening some bolts. Luckily, whatever he tightened fixed the issue.

At 4,100 miles, a rattling sound started at what was thought to be the right side c-pillar. They couldn't locate the source of the rattle (easily heard) and said to come back in case they needed to "open up" some interior panels. :eek: After a day, they found the culprit: a cracked rear strut mount. They replaced the part and all is well.

During the fix, they broke the top cover of the trunk (it's hanging low). The part is on order.

Note the loaner they gave me for the 3 days (2014 Sonata base) was terrible. Wreaked of smoke, and filthy inside. So happy to have the Genesis back.

Hopefully that's the end of my story (at 4,400 miles now). :)

Different Genesis model years have had different number and intensity of problems. There are also some difference based on engine or trim level. 2011 has been a lot more reliable than 2009-2010. With regard to audio/video/Nav, and suspension/tires, I think the 2012 has been pretty reliable. Only big problem with 2012 is the 5.0 V8 oil consumption issue, and Hyundai seems to be replacing those engines when pressed by owners.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that your Genny will stay trouble free. I love the way the Genesis drives and the V8 power but I think this shattered my confidence in upgrading to the new generation. I guess I'm in for the same loaner :(

One thing I have to agree with is that Hyundai has never denied or tried to push off any warranty work so that's a positive. I just see way too much of my dealers service department.

I bot mine July 2010, 62 k miles on it. Mostly high speed hiway driving.
Replaced: The Nav system around the 6 mo. mark.
Idler pulley bearing around 30 k
Left door window switch around 40 k
New set of tires.....OEM Dunlops went out-of-round and became very noisy at around 40 kmiles.
Now planning to change the battery. It went dead a couple of times...one time left trunk open.......last nite, it was very cold but and it died, dont know why. I think its time to change it.

As you can see from above, that's not a bad repair record. Sounds like you got a Monday built.

MY 146,000 miles experience. The steering wheel limit switched replaced in first 20k. no problem since. Only needed one wheel alignment and has never been bad on tires which we get about 55k to 60k on sets after the Dunflops. Front brake pads lasted to over 130k. So will I buy another Genesis? ABSOLUTLY. The Transmission in mine is the ZF and its still smooth as silk as is the 4.6 V8 engine.

Well your experience does seem atypical. My 2013 R-spec is approaching 25,000 miles, and I bought it in '14. I drive a lot, as I have an 50 mile one-way commute. (100 miles a day minimum) I have done regular oil & filter changes per the manual, and one set of all the air filters. I have had ZERO problems. I have a back road route to work and my car sees 100+ mph almost every day. I had the leather loosening thing but cleaned the seat with a good lexol cleaner and it tightened right up. I'm still on my first set of Continentals and they provide a decent ride and enough traction that I would need to do a track day if I wanted a stickier tire. I am very satisfied. My wife drove the car from the Sacramento California area to Salt lake city and averaged over 29 mpg running regular gas. 29.8 max. My typical is around 22 on premium fuel with a heavy foot on the back roads. Stereo is FANTASTIC and I use it every day. No problems. I would make the purchase again in a heartbeat.
The thing is that the people that have no problems rarely hit the forums, they are having too much fun driving!

awesome.
I was going to get a 2013 as they come off lease but the 15s are so dang pretty, I can't decide.

I just ticked 80k on my 2011 4.6. I am noticing the transmission occasionally gets that hard kickdown to first when coming to a stop, and I also have issues with my turn signal turning off my headlights. I think the first will be helped by a transmission service (I'll replace the pan/filters and flush) I don't care what Hyundai says about "sealed for life". I'm sourcing the turn signal unit from a breakers (about $100) and replace myself. It's only 4 screws and a couple of connectors.

The only other complaints I have are not due to failure or issue, but around intentional design/feature. I'd like to upgrade to the 2012 suspension. If anyone has a real solution for the intrusive ESC I'd love to hear it. Unfortunately, just turning it OFF or removing the fuse is not a great solution.

Outside of that, it's been gas, oil and tires. But those were all expected. Still very happy with the purchase overall and would likely buy again (if I ever get tired of this one ;-) ...)

I have both the 4.6 and R-Spec, in both cases I found the ESC intrusion was significantly reduced by installing the Uniq Collar mod.;

Coupled with a decent set of tires, the ESC problem is almost none existent in the 2009 4.6 even though I push both cars pretty hard!...:D

It might worth investigating this relatively simple cost and effective mod., prior to investing in a suspension upgrade... just my two cents...

I bought the collars for mine, they came in the mail the other day I will be looking up the install instructions as they do not come with any.
I have found the esc is always flashing as my tires try to spin, I replaced the stock 235/50's with 255/45's to see if that improved it, the car can still spin the 255's no problem.:)
