In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. To my surprise they are selling aftermkt oil filters for the Genesis at Pep Boys. Pep boys was running a special for 5 qts of quaker state and a puralator classic oil filter for 10 bucks. That's 2 bucks a qt and a free oil filter. I am usually not a buyer of aftermkt oil filters, but after having done a few oil changes on the V8, I was a bit surprised at how flimsy and cheap the OEM Mahle filter seems to be. After checking out the Purolater filter, I was suprised to see that it seems to be built better.

Disclaimer:This is anecdotal evidence by me, I am not an engineer and I don't know $hit about one performance versus the other. These are just my observations.

The OEM filter looks like this. When you pull it out of the housing the paper portion securing it to the filter housing basically disintegrates (white portion):

This filter comes with the gaskets for the housing and the V6 gasket at the end of the oil filter as well as the drain plug gasket. (it's missing the hex key gasket for the V8, but I don't even bother with that). I think it's worth a try, considering that the 5qts of oil and the filter are almost as much as just the original OEM filter alone. (FYI, I used the oil on another car, I use Mobil 1 AFE 0-20). The filter is regularly priced at 3.99, which is about half of price of OEM.

The Puralator Filter (L25848)
1.Seems to have a skeletal structure made of plastic, on the top and bottom, as well as internally.
2. Pleats seem to be denser and more uniform than the OEM filter.
3. There is a green rubber gasket on the top and bottom ensuring a tight seal.

Nice pictoral!

Hey the filters are made in Korea- most likely rebranded.

Not sure who makes them. Wix also makes aftermkt filters for the Genesis. It wouldn't surprise me if 1 place makes them and then some other place just stamps them with different brand logos :

In case there's no Pep Boys store nearby, I found that Advanced Auto Parts also carries the filter.

Maybe I am missing something, but my stash of OEM filters for the 2009 V6 (26320 3C250) looks identical to the black one above with yellow filter element and green rubber gasket inside (and not anything like the white plastic one shown above). I purchased mine from a dealer about a year ago and still have 5 left (since I do my own oil changes).

They switched the filters. The new ones are on the left, the old ones on the right.
They did this on my Lexus as well. The old filters were made in Japan. The new filters are made in Thailand, are cheaper and lower quality and the old ones were discontinued except in Japan. TRD (toyota racing development) still used the old oil filters and you could buy it from distributors, at 5X the cost.

They don't even look like the same filter to me. They have differrent flange configurations, so I would be suspicious as to whether the white one is the correct filter.

First time I bought Genesis oil filters at a dealer about 2.5 years ago, they gave me the wrong one, which I didn't find out until I removed the old filter. But if the white one is correct, I guess I will be buying Purolater from now on.

The filter I removed from my my 4.6 at the first oil change was a Mahle with the white end caps. A Hyundai 26320-3C30A I purchased last year is also a Mahle wih the white end caps. I now use the Wix that looks to be the same as the Purolator.

It's the correct filter. I have changed the oil 1/2 dozen times and not bought filters in bulk but rather one at a time from 2 separate dealers. They have all looked the same, the part number changed but the product is the same.

I went to the Pep Boys website looking for the Purolator L25848 and the price was $3.99. However, the picture of the filter appears to be like the white one shown in previous posts:

Maybe there is only one manufacturer (for OEM and after-market) and they are switching over from the black model to the white one?

Try Amazon, they are much better at displaying the actual product, instead of a catalog photo:

Yes, I saw that also. I was wondering if they are in the process of swtiching designs, just like Hyundai (and maybe there is only one supplier).

The Wix filter looks identical, so that wouldn't surprise me. The Mahle filter is different, honestly couldn't tell you if one is better than the other. Anecdotally the aftermarket ones feel better built, but WTF do I know.

I would agree with your assessment of which filter is better, except that the black Hyundai OEM filters I purchased are exactly like the the black after-market filters you purchased and posted pictures of (and I mean exactly, including the 6 round dimples on the flange).

Yes, exactly with same markings. That appears to be the same one (but with different markings) as the Purolator you posted a picture of above.

I also have an older Hyundai OEM filter with almost identical markings, but with the the letters "DONGWOO CO." added. A Google search reveals the following:

  • The Bosch Group and MANN+HUMMEL form a joint venture and acquire the Purolator filter business from ArvinMeritor on April 1st, 2006.
  • MANN+HUMMEL KOREA LIMITED is founded in Seoul, Korea, also in 2006.
  • MANN+HUMMEL purchased the Korean filter specialist Dongwoo Co. Ltd. and name changed to MANN-HUMMEL Dongwoo Co. Ltd. in 2008

Thanks for the info
Will be getting the after market from now on.

Ummm. Maybe you should read the entire thread. The after-market and OEM filter are made by same company; however, it appears that both have switched designs from the black one to the white one. Open the box and see which one it is before purchasing, and if you want the black one, better stock up because it looks like it may not be around much longer.

The price charged by Pep Boys seems pretty good. I just bought a Fram at Walmart for the 3.8 and it was about $6.00. My last batch of Wix brand filters came from Rock Auto, but they were not that cheap once one pays shipping.

yeah 3.99 is great. Or just wait for an oil special, where you essentially get the filter for free along with a discount on what ever oil they're bundling it with. Right now it's QS 5 qts 17 bucks mail in rebate 7 bucks, or 10 bucks before tax.

2 bucks per qt and a free filter, can't beat that.
