  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Aftermarket Oil Filters

When you say there are only two OEM filters for the Genesis, you are correct. The one with black end cap is made by Mann-Hummel, and the one with whiter end cap is made by Mahle. The newer V8's specify the Mahle filters. I know that in 2009, the only filter available was the one from Mann-Hummel with black end caps for both the V6 and V8.

mtrot is talking about an after-market oil filter, not branded Hyundai or not one of the after-market filters (also made by Mann-Hummel or Mahle) that are identical to the OEM's. In theory, some other company could make a high quality after-market filter for the Genesis that is as good or better than the OEM (or after-markets that are identical to the OEM), but in this case the filter he got at the quick lube is junk. The filter that mtrot got at the quick lube is probably the correct filter in terms of specifications, but it is just a piece of junk. It is not the OEM filter with black end caps made by Mann-Hummel. Quick lube places typically use filters that cost them about $1 or $2 at most, and you imagine how bad the quality of these filters are, and whenever I have gone to a quick lube (prior to owning the Genesis since I now do my own oil changes) I have always brought my own filter (OEM or quality after-market).

OK, interesting visit to the oil change shop today. I have been using this filter from Amazon for some time:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0068MWZCK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1"]Amazon.com: MAHLE Original OX 351D Oil Filter: Automotive[/ame]

The last time I purchased I ordered two of them. I had the first of them installed with no problem a couple months ago. So, I went to the shop today to have the second one installed, and the tech brought me both the filter they removed and the filter I had brought today. He stated that the filter I brought today did not fit the car, which I thought was darn strange, since I had ordered two of them from Amazon on the same order.

Upon inspection, the two filters are indeed different. The filter they removed appeared to have the black end caps, while the one I brought has white end caps.

What he told me is that on the one with the white end caps, the diameter of that inner hole is too small. And it does indeed appear to be smaller than the hole of the one they removed.

Now, the listing on Amazon still has the confirmation at the top that the filter DOES fit my 2012 Genesis 4.6. So, I am really confused now as to which one I should order in the future. If not from Amazon, what source do you recommend? Thanks!

Anyone who has followed the discussion about Genesis oil filters has probably noted the following things that is causing confusion:
  1. In 2009, I believe that the 4.6 and 3.8 used the same filters (different part numbers due to drain plug washer). Later that changed, but not sure when.
  2. At some point Hyundai changed OEM filter vendors for the V8 (4.6 and 5.0) from Mann to Mahle. Not sure if the latest 2014 3.8 filters are still made by Mann (black hard plastic end caps).
  3. In 2012, the Genesis had multiple V8 engines: 4.6 and 5.0, and 5.0 R-Spec.
  4. On-line vendors can have incorrect information about filter application, due in part to the above situation. I see no reason why one would assume that their information is infallible.
Because of the above, I see absolutely no reason to even consider an after-market oil filter. Best bet is to get them from a dealer, and make sure you give them your VIN. If you need to purchase online, try Jim Ellis Hyundai (and some other dealers who sell online).

There is too much variance in the aftermarket filters. They kinda sorta fit, which is what you don't want in the lubrication system of your car. It's a 9 dollar part. Go to the dealer or buy them online from a dealer, you're not saving any money buying it in the aftermarket and setting yourself up for potential denial of any warranty issues god forbid something were to go wrong.
