Been here awhile...
To my surprise they are selling aftermkt oil filters for the Genesis at Pep Boys. Pep boys was running a special for 5 qts of quaker state and a puralator classic oil filter for 10 bucks. That's 2 bucks a qt and a free oil filter. I am usually not a buyer of aftermkt oil filters, but after having done a few oil changes on the V8, I was a bit surprised at how flimsy and cheap the OEM Mahle filter seems to be. After checking out the Purolater filter, I was suprised to see that it seems to be built better.
Disclaimer:This is anecdotal evidence by me, I am not an engineer and I don't know $hit about one performance versus the other. These are just my observations.
The OEM filter looks like this. When you pull it out of the housing the paper portion securing it to the filter housing basically disintegrates (white portion):
This filter comes with the gaskets for the housing and the V6 gasket at the end of the oil filter as well as the drain plug gasket. (it's missing the hex key gasket for the V8, but I don't even bother with that). I think it's worth a try, considering that the 5qts of oil and the filter are almost as much as just the original OEM filter alone. (FYI, I used the oil on another car, I use Mobil 1 AFE 0-20). The filter is regularly priced at 3.99, which is about half of price of OEM.
The Puralator Filter (L25848)
1.Seems to have a skeletal structure made of plastic, on the top and bottom, as well as internally.
2. Pleats seem to be denser and more uniform than the OEM filter.
3. There is a green rubber gasket on the top and bottom ensuring a tight seal.
