If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Don't believe everything you see on the internet. Your example is one of them.

5hp increase on 340hp+ -- that's amazing
Is the increase at the lower end, top end or across the whole range?
So, I will stay will the V6 and with the new air filter I will have a real sleeper"
Will it now out accelerate the 5.0 RSpec? --------- and oh yes" ->
Anything on the internet m u s t be true :D:D:D
:grouphug: amazing what people believe......"""""""

As you see im asking you , so as to be sure, asking doesn't mean i believe

Pass..............................

You'd be surprised. Some OE replacement paper filters out flow "performance" filters.

I've never dyno'd anything with just a filter change, but I have seen a few HP from a complete intake kit with K&N or similar filter. Not always, and most of the time it only makes a worthwhile difference if you tune for it as well. If you actually get anything out of a filter alone in these cars, I doubt it would be enough to see it on a dyno, and since we have no way of tuning a G, my guess is zero gain or close to it. I run a K&N because I will never buy another filter, not for the HP.

Obviously air plays an important role in combustion engines. Cold air intakes are based on getting denser air into the system, and superchargers are based on getting more air into the system more quickly. There's even a quite noticeable change in my cars' performance on a 40-50F day vs. a 90-100F day (I love those first few cool days of fall when it seems like you've gotten a free performance upgrade!).

So while it's very possible that a filter that allows more air flow into the combustion chamber will yield a slight increase in power, you also run the risk of allowing things you don't want in as well! Oh, and 5HP on top of 300-400HP is going to be pretty much imperceptible.

It may or may not be snake oil, but I would personally pass.

Absolutely true.

Glad you said that....... I've been trying to come up with something similar but now you've done it for me :) Very well said!!

That's why I use K&N in all my vehicles - 2012 Genny V6, '04 GMC Envoy 5.3, '90 Isuzu 2.6 SpaceCab, and my 2006 Suzuki 650.

Clean 'em once or twice a year and that's that. Used them for years and never had a problem them or with them "letting more stuff" into the engine.

How long does it take to clean and re-oil the filter?

How much does it cost per application to clean and re-oil the filter?

(i'm thinking too much time and money since I don't drive but ~8K/yr)

I've got a small spray can of K&N filter oil that's going on 10 years old. It was about $6.00. The proper cleaner goes a bit quicker and is about $10.00/bottle. The spray oil is the only way to go, it makes it much tougher to over oil VS the squeeze bottle and lasts at least 5X longer. The filter cleaner is the only thing that can be used on a K&N filter without damaging it. This is where most people go wrong and then blame the filter for passing dirt. Using gas, some other solvent, and/or trying to "blow dry" the filter with compressed air destroys them every time, even if you don't see the damage. I've got a friend who learned this the hard way. Cleaning one usually only takes a few minutes after letting the cleaner sit on it a while. Air drying depends on how hot it is, humidity etc. Usually I just let it sit overnight, oil it, and re-install. Doing it "right" for 6 different cars/trucks/motorcycles costs me a few dollars/year.

EDIT: Only driving 8K miles/year, you would never buy more oil or cleaner. There is no reason to clean a K&N filter more often than every 20-30K miles or in your case every 3-4 years.

Unless you put the car on a dynamometer before and after installing the filter how would you know if you get 5 more H, 5more HP is hardly noticeable. I put a K&N filter in my 2010 4.6 and couldn't tell the difference.

When it comes to changing out the OEM style air filter, think twice. All you may be getting is a little more intake noise (Oh Boy, more power). For sure, you will be getting less filtering------------which is not a good thing if you want to keep your car for 100,000+ miles. A different style air filter may also cause problems if you have internal engine warranty issues.

In any event, take the time to read through http://moto.lexp.net/wiki/ISO_5011_Duramax_Air_Filter_Test_Report

Among other things in this report was the statement that:

In 60 minutes the AC Filter accumulated 574gms of dirt and passed only 0.4gms. After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N “plugged up” nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt.

Guys... Ford and other OEM use K and N or similar as Factory installs. Yes, I said it.. And they do it. Check the Boss 302, or the GT500 or the Ford GT two seat. And the SVT Focus..

And GM has used these as OEM. And all of them offer the full systems as OEM certified aftermarket dealer installs.

So, all the crap back and forth means nothing. The $40k GT500, putting out 650 factory HP engine works just fine and does not ingest too much dirt with its factory aluminum throttle body and cone design K&N CAI... Installed by Union craftsmen, hand signing each engine.
