Another turned off potential Hyundai Genesis buyer...

Sales manager told me today that he would sell me a Genesis at 1,200 below msrp. Said it does him no good to have them sitting on his floor. He "wants to get them out in the community for potential customers to see". This was in casual conversation, so I bet I could get more than that with some negotiation.

I have always been treated respectfully by this dealership...so there are good ones out there.
I haven't figured every package version of the Genesis, but on a loaded V8 ($42,000 MSRP) dealers have over $3,700.00 in mark-up from their invoice price.

Wow! That realy sucks...

The last I heard was 22K by Dec 31. 5% V8s.

I'm no expert and certainly don't have inside information but I can't believe, for one minute, that Hyundai is "Limiting" US production to 8,000 vehicles and then not shipping any until next summer.

They spent a ton of cash creating this vehicle. They are going to want to sell a lot of them. I think right now they are a little slow in production because they are scrutinizing every vehicle to make certain the product is right. One they get the recipe down, they will crank that baby up!

Someone in an earlier post stated that the math works out to 14 cars per dealer. A local dealer in Dallas, TX already has 13 with more on the way. This isn't a mega-dealer either.

There will be plenty of Genesis. Hyundai isn't making a collectors car (unless it flops).

I'm just sayin!

I can get a Lexus today for invoice. Or a Genesis for MSRP. Hmmm?

That's a no brainer.

Well i work at a World Largest Hyundai dealer in S Florida and we are at MSRP reason being only 8,000 genesis are being ship to US market for 2009 model with 700+dealer thats like less than 14 per dealer. i went 2 the genesis star training today and was told this by the trainers after that we wont get any till next summer for 2010:(

Sounds like a bunch of BS to me.

Also sounds like this BS is being used to justify selling at MSRP for a long time.

I hope you are right. It is just all this mis-information. I wish Hyundai would address it. Almost sounds like their fueling it with the training guys.

It is hard for me to believe that Hyundai is ready to launch a $88 million dollar advertising campaign on 8,000 vehicles. Even on the 22,000 this calendar year, that I've heard.

There are lots of rumors about problems with this car. One of the most believable is a custom issues. Who knows?

I've quit trying to figure out what is true and I'm waiting to see what happens.

In doing my research, somewhere out on the web it said the target U.S. sales number for the first year was 50,000 vehicles. That would be 2,500 V8s, a more reasonable number, like 3-4/dealer. For the V6, in round numbers, it's about 60 cars for a year or a run rate of 5/mo. A no brainer, IMHO. My guy has already sold 4, including mine, and it isn't even announced yet!

John...I appreciate your comments and the whole supply and demand issue. I get it. But in situations such as this, I think the dealer and the salesman are being very short sighted by the fat payday they can receive now, when they (along with the parent company) can be better served in the long run by better word of mouth, customer satisfaction and cars on the road. And in the big picture, I'm sure that's what Hyundai wants. But then again, that's just me.

I couldn't agree with you more. My post was not an effort to defend their actions. Rather, it was just intended to recap what actually happens in the real world. It's not a new phenomena...and certainly won't change so long as there are people who are willing to play the game.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the initial introductory hub-bub dies.

That's pretty much how I saw it.

Misinformation to create a false sense of limited supply. That would justify the "market adjustment", wouldn't it?!

I know the dealer you're talking about. They had 14 originally. Then down to 13. Now up to 14 again. Someone forgot to tell Hyundai about this dealer getting more than it should. :)

Excellent point! This is probably just something said by dealers charging the additional money...

LOL!

This dealer would have already exceeded his allotment of cars based on the original posters claim of approx. 14 cars per dealer. The math in that post was wrong. If you use the numbers mentioned (8000 cars and 700+ dealers) it works out to just over 11 cars per dealer.

There are 2 dealers within 50 miles of my house that currently have 9 cars available and an additional 2 dealers with 8 available. The other dealers have anywhere from 3 to 6 vehicles available. All total there are 43 Genesis sedans available within 50 miles of my location........not too shabby, and certainly doesn't justify paying MSRP or higher. It's just a waiting game and I have plenty of time.

I own an '06 Azera and my dealer is tired of seeing me buy my cars from the competiton. He's offering me $500 above invoice. Since I;m going to the Hyundai Tour this Sunday I can pick up a coupon for the $500 I'd be giving him and come out at invoice which is not bad for this early in the launch. He says he can order the car so I just need to tell him whether I want a V6 or V8. I'll make up my mind on Sunday.

Hello all. I posted some of the previously but wanted to give more details in case it might help someone. Reaslistically-I purchased my Genesis for $32895. I was quoted a market adjustment of $2500.00 and politely told him what he could do with it-trying to negotiate so I didn't want to piss him off right away.

We negotiated over a 3 week period during which I brought friends in to look at the car to show that I am a "team player". The person I was dealing with is the sales manager, and his boss, the General Manager knew who I was since I was the first one to ask about the Genesis a while ago. The MSRP was $36000.00 when we started. I had a trade which due to the mileage, top dollar from any dealer in this area was $5000.00-including this dealer. Auction prices confirm that this is what my old car was worth.

My salesman called me and told me that he had the car that I wanted in stock-3.8L Genesis Platinum/Black-Premium Plus. I walked into the dealership with 4 quotes ranging from $33888.00 to $34500.00-this poked the first hole in their MSRP-Market Adjustement/Markup plan. I had each quote on a separate piece of paper with the business card of the salesman from that dealership prominently showing-laid it on the desk right in front of the salesman-he kept looking at them during our "discussions" I also had a blank check in my hand from my bank for a car loan that was pre-arranged at 5.89 fixed rate-just needed the amount filled in.

I told him at the start that this was a "want" and not a "need" and I could drive my Avalon for another 4 years at least-but I wanted the Genesis if we could meet on terms. He gave me an additional $3450.00 for the Avalon and didn't jack up the price of the Genesis to compensate because I told him that I'd leave if he tried it. Turns out that they had hooked some person into buying my old car for 29 percent interest-and they thought they were going to get $7000.00 for it-wait-it gets better.

When I finally got to finance to sign paperwork, the salesman had promised me tint, etching, and some free oil changes (they didn't like this one) on the "due to the customer" sheet that they all signed-these items were not on the final contract. Because they listed it on the "due to the customer" sheet-and it wasn't my fault-I received all these items for free on top of the great deal. Essentially, I bought the Genesis at invoice after all is said and done, and received the items above for free due to their error in trying to sign me quickly.

Here's the best-the day after I traded my Avalon, the person that the dealership had hooked at the abusive 29% interest rate backed out and now they have a car that is worth $5000.00 with 115,000 miles on it-that they agreed to pay off for $7950.00. I paid them in full for the Genesis, so there is no way they can come back to me for additional $-I'm done.

My Genesis is a fantastic car and I am thrilled-sorry this is so long but thought you guys would enjoy the story. Be persistent and drive your deal to get what you want so you feel good about your purchase of this great car. In this economy, unless you are desperate-the market adjustment is B.S. In response to an earlier post-I would definitely contact Hyundai corporate-especially about abusive or poor treatment. They are really sensitive to the Genesis launch and will hammer those that aren't supporting it-I'm sure of this. I'll post pictures soon. Good luck and happy hunting guys.

I don't know who has been telling the dealers that there is a limit of 10-or13-or 14 Genesis per year. Totally not the case. The dealer that I purchased from has 13 now with another 6 on order. The dealers who want them simply scoop up what the other dealers in their region don't take when Hyundai offers them. The General Manager of my dealership (he manages 8 total) told me this and I see the cars here on the ground so I believe it. Hope this helps...

Great post, Deeezldoc! It appears you pulled all the right strings and got a great, great deal on your Genesis!

Wow Deezledoc, great stuff. You could start a sub-topic on how to negotiate to buy a Genesis!

I just told my sales rep what I was willing to pay, and I thought it was fair but I was willing to wait to get the car I wanted with the colors and options I liked.

The sales rep went back and forth to the sales manager 3 times and kept putting silly numbers in front of me but I said if they wanted to play that game I could leave and call every dealer in a 200 mile radius it was up to them. I spent my time checking out all the cars in the showroom. After 10 minutes of that game they finally said "OK" and took my deposit. The managers came over, shook my hand and thanked me for the business.

Don't you hate the game? Car sales plays on emotions, you always have to be ready to walk.

Sounds like one of the dealers me and buddy visited while I was shopping for the Grand Prix.

A homerun. I think that's how you stick it to the bad dealers. I think these are the ways to throw off their rip-off plan and put a strike on them. Good work, people should use this tactic and rid of all the scams that some of the Hyundai dealers seems to be using, just to get more money out of the potential customer's pocket.

Great work, and congrats on getting your new car. Hopefully those dealers who put a premium over the MSRP soon learns that it will never work and withdraws their nonsense soon. Luckily, most of the dealers in my area(Northern NJ) does not seem to do that, so not all dealers are ripping off its customers, which is a good sign.

I agree. There are good dealers out there. I was initially put off by our local dealership. It was only at the urging of fellow posters to this site that I took the time to talk with other dealers in the surrounding area.

Last Saturday I called 11 dealers to see who would honor the Hyundai lease program on the Genesis. 8 of the 11 said they did; however, only 1 had a Genesis with Tech Package. We agreed to the terms that afternoon over the phone (they are 80 miles away) and the delivered the car on Monday to my office. In other words, they didn't try to upcharge me in any area - it was smooth, easy and simple and would buy another car from them again if the opportunity arose. FYI, it was Kerry Hyundai in Florence, KY.

I gave our local dealer an opportunity to match and they declined.

So, please don't give up on the Genesis because of one dealer as there are good ones out there. I love the car and am glad I took the advice of people on this site to give other dealers a chance.

Thanks,

Carcapco / David

PS. I ordered the Wings from an ebayer in Korea - so I'm hoping that the wings come in will match the holes on the trunk. Will advise
