anyone drive genesis coupe on racetrack or auto cross

any one track or autocross the genesis, any model ?

the Track model with 8 speed auto seems to be a very well equipped for

driving on the track. ie; suspension-brakes-limited slip-larger springs and sway

bars and bolt for increased camber.
 
I took my 2013 2.0T base model to a Driver's Edge Performance Driving school event, Saturday and Sunday last Feb at Motor Sport Ranch in Cresson Texas - 3.1 mile track 16 turns.

The car kept up real well in the green (novice) division. Plenty of power and agility with the mostly off the street daily drivers. At higher levels you start getting more mods adn dedicated track cars. The Corvettes, Audi's, and Cadillacs, of course had a lot more speed and acceleration, but i didn't really get passed that much. Never got passed by any of the Lotuses in the group.

The problem is the 8 speed auto. I started spilling transmission fluid on my 6th and by far fastest run (runs are about 23 minutes solid track time, 4 per day). So I had to leave the track. There was transmission fluid all over the bottom of my car, but not a leak. It was venting, i don't know if i boiled it, frothed it, or just was sloshing it out the vents. The car always drove fine and has since, but I realized it is not a track car with the auto tran. Last month I traded it in and got a 3.8 track with the 6 speed. I have read other reports of this same issue with the auto on the track. As a daily driver the 2.0T auto is sweet as could be, but on the track it just doesn't work.
 
This activity can void all warranty.

Yea, I'll let that stop me from autoX. I'm sure there's something noted in Magnuson-Moss act in regards to proving damage, though it doesn't effect me really since I've long since voided mine.
 
did you check with dealer and find out how much oil came out ? how much did he put in to replace it ? were you running in full automatic mod ? or manual sport/padle shift mode ?--I would think full automatic mode would cause trans to heat up faster because it is shifting more. I have driven in five different Florida driving clubs over the last 12 years and have never seen a dealer writing tag numbers to watch for warranty claims. Dealers make a lot of money doing warranty work so I can t see why they would do this. thank you all for responses.

I did not go to teh dealer to have the level checked. I should have but going to a dealer is such a pain. I was incensed that the car did not have a dipstick, what idiotic thinking is behind that - yes I know it is becoming standard practice - part of the trend to force more cars into the dealership for service and repairs. However, the car continued to drive flawlessly, so I doubt I lost more than half a quart. I used the paddle shifters in manual mode the entire time I was on the track. The same thing happened to my 2006 Honda Odysssey just driving the speed limit through the hill country with a full load, the transmission fluid boiled and I lost most of it, so this was definitely less severe in the Genesis under much more intense conditions.

As to some of the other comments. I asked Hyundai Corp directly if taking the car to the track would void the warranty. They said that it would be up to the dealership to determine if the damage was directly related to the hard driving on the track or not, so the indication is that the warranty will not be boided per se', but track induced damage woudl not necessarily be covered. However, now with the track version, as long as I am not racing competitively I think Hyundai would have a difficult time winning a case of warrranty denial with a mediator seeing that the car is sold as a track version of the car with no specific disclaimers. Nissan, I've heard, includes dicalimers with their GTR about what voids the warranty, so there is a precedent for this in track designated cars. However, I won't be advertizing any track days in this car, if I ever go ;-).

The slushie tranny is not good for much but gas mileage. If you want to race the Coupe, get a manual, preferably a 3.8, or budget a lot for continuous tweaks to the 2.0 Turbo which will not have a warranty any longer once you try to match the stock 3.8. The R-Spec/Track cars with manuals are incredible.
 
thanks for response-the manual would be better-I agree. the 8 speed auto started up shifting on its own after several laps probably because of heat. oil temp also went up about 3/8 s inch on oil temp gauge after 3 or 4 laps. in auto mode or manual mode it was difficult to keep it in low enough gear to keep engine reving high enough for max power and speed. its like the car was trying to protect itself after it got hot. disappointing experience.

Is your Coupe a GT or a Track? The GT doesn't have any of the track-tuned suspension parts or the Torsen diff, yet it has all the weight of the additional luxury parts, so that would explain a lot of your results. The Base, Premium and GT give the R-Specs and Track models a bad name, performance-wise. If yours is a Track, though, then it might be a servicing issue with your tranny - and either way, definitely make sure you get it serviced up. There might be a shift kit or converter available, so look around.

But, let's put it this way - the R-Spec "racing" models (both the 2.0T & 3.8) are ONLY available with manual transmissions for a reason ;) The difference is game-changing compared to the auto. I can literally burn 2nd and chirp 3rd, depending on various factors (like cruising instead of racing, and my tires reaching the end of their life). But, if the tires are newer or warmed up, I can hook at launch and the grip and power engagement are amazing through the gears.
 
mine is the Track with auto 8 speed-drove it at Sebring-only change to total stock was Motul 900 brake fluid-brembos were very good but would upgrade the pads to either Hawk HP plus or HT 10 s.

have driven a mazda mazdaspeed 2004 factory turbo for the last 10 years so I understand aftermarket upgrades.

wanted to try the automatic because my wife wanted to drive more and doesn t like shifting-I may still have to look into trading genesis for a 6 speed. I just bought the car and it only has 2400 miles on it-I broke it in slowly-had them check trans fluid and change to fresh oil before going to track. I pushed it but not that hard-after 5 or 6 laps oil temp gauge went up about 3/8 s inch and stayed and trans in manual mode started up shifting and not letting me run more the 5 k or so rpms.
asked the tech about potential overheating and he said my model has cooling fins on the underside of trans and should not heat up. I saw the cooling fins when the car was on the rack-they are very minor but they are there.
not that I want to do upgrades but do you have more info on upgrades or the service issues for the trans you mentioned ? thanks for your input !
 
Mine is the 6-speed manual, so Google is your friend on that, as well as the popular Coupe forum on another website. I'm sure there's something you can do, and whatever it is, someone has tried it, but that auto transmission is a well-known problem.

Yet, it sounds like the engine was overheating!, which could have had little to do with the transmission. Fresh oil may have saved you from blowing it on the spot. I've never ever seen my engine temp move much at all once warmed up - and I live in the hot-n-humid South, mind you - even in traffic with the air on during a 100+ afternoon with 80% or more humidity, the needle has never moved beyond half-way. I've never had a car with such stable engine cooling. Yours is only a bit heavier than mine (luxury features) with the auto instead of the manual, so if your temp needle moved enough to notice it, you have an overheating problem. Make sure your cooling system is perfect before running it anywhere near that hard again.

Of course, all of this assumes you didn't just floor it at redline the whole time, overwork the tranny, and slam on the brakes too much ;)
 
Hope you have something in writing from Hyundai. Just someone telling you it will or it won't void it isn't worth the paper it is written on.
