  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Apple Car Play

A salesman told me carplay could be downloaded from the bluelink App Store in the future. I would take it with a grain of salt though.

Hopefully the same for Android auto. I'm not willing to switch to iPhone simply for that feature. I wonder what other apps will be available in the bluelink app store and will they require a subscription to download?

It appears from most reports, current 2015 and prior vehicles will not be able to use CarPlay. It is unclear if an upgrade is available once it ships on later year 2015 models.

If it does end up officially on a '15 MY genesis and they don't retrofit then that is a terrible move on Hyundai's part. They would be punishing their early adopters and would have several upset owners on here I'm sure. I'm still going to hold out hope that carplay and android auto end up being apps that become available for download in the car later this year. #wishfulthinking

I hate to tell you this, but early adopters are pioneers. Pioneers are the one with arrows in them. The upside is you get to be the first one on the block with a brand new model. The downside is you find the things the engineers may have missed or could not get done in time and hopefully others benefit over the following years.

As far as CarPlay, it is unfortunately not just the availability of an app - it is apparently hardware or firmware that would need to be retrofitted in early 2015 models of both the Sonata and Genesis. The "app" will simply communicate with a CarPlay or Android enabled headset, which these cars shipping now evidently do not have.

This is nothing new, it happens all the time, especially with tech stuff. BMW did this with the 2011 models when they offered "BMW Apps" which allowed enabled iPhone apps to use the cars unit. It did not ship until later in the MY2011 cars and if you missed it, you missed it. I believe there was a for fee retrofit later and some third party hacks, but unless you knew it was coming, you did not get it. Same thing with Mercedes E class color displays - it happened late in the 2011 run.

I understand that's how a lot of companies do business but that doesn't make it a good move in my opinion. If you still want the pioneer sales then say what you are working on that will appear in later in the same model year. Anything slated for the next model year is obviously out of the question. And make a promise to your loyal customers to make the upgrades. It seems that these two features simply weren't ready for prime time prior to launch so their availability got delayed. Why should the consumer pay for their failed project management?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

No company is going to announce a car shipping and then lay out their product development plan. Look up Osborne Computers. When you buy a car model you buy that car and the features it has listed. There is no guarantee of upgradability for new features and the only way to stay ahead is to research as much as you can. CarPlay was announced as coming later in the model year before this car shipped, so if it was a priority, one could have waited. Some things cannot easily be upgraded and the cost to do so can also add to the price.

Once again I get that there are several examples of companies that would not do that but just as they announced there would be downloadable apps, they could announce late arriving products that they absolutely intend on bringing to the car that model year. At least I can decide wait or buy now if you have that flexibility in your buying timeline. I, for instance, did not as I had a lease to turn in by 6/28 so I had to buy something before then. look through the genesis app features on Google play and notice how many are listed as "late arrival" and then tell me again how car companies dont do that...

Well said. Nice Osborne reference too.

I was told by Hyundai tech staff at NY Auto Show that new 2015 Genesis and Sonatas would not be upgradable. they also said they expect a mid year refresh with Carplay available in it.

The initial shipments of the 2015 Sonata will not support carplay, but according to this article, Hyundai will be offering a dealer installed upgrade. Hope the same thing will apply to the genesis. I e-mailed consumeraffairs@hmausa.com and asked them if the 2015 genesis can be upgraded to support carplay and I'll post any response I get.

http://www.consumersdigest.com/news/2015-sonata-debuts-without-phone-control-programs

"Hyundai Motor’s redesigned Sonata initially will be sold without Apple’s CarPlay or Google’s Android Auto phone-control software installed, a spokesperson says, but Hyundai plans to permit buyers to have the programs added at the dealership once the software is available for installation.

Michael O’Brien, who is Hyundai’s vice president of product planning and corporate planning, told Consumers Digest and other members of Midwest Automotive Media Association that the software will be available at some point during the 2015 model year, but not in the 2015 Sonata models that just rolled into dealerships. Although O’Brien said Hyundai intended to allow buyers to return to the dealership after purchase to have CarPlay and Android Auto added, he said the company hasn’t decided whether it will charge for the programs.

CarPlay and Android Auto display your smartphone’s functions and mobile applications on a vehicle’s console screen so you can keep your eyes on the road to operate phone functions and apps while you drive."

Don't know about Sonata, but I wouldn't hold my breath for getting Genesis updated w/CarPlay or Android Auto. I'm more interested w/the latter and the fact that non-Ultimate/Ultimate gennies are running even different OSes (Android and Meego) makes it pretty clear that Hyundai will have hard time updating both.

Which one is the ultimates running?

I own a 2015 genesis sedan 3.8 liter RWD with the Ultimate package. My dealer (Oxnard, Ca) said that they had information that in about 3 months Hyundai would do a firmware update to add Apple Car Play to the infotainment unit. I'm a little skeptical, but the dealer/owner felt it will come around the time when the next iPhone is released. We'll see!

I do not think dealer sales people are the best source for third party vendor information on unreleased products. CarPlay is compatible with the current iOS 7.1. and an upgrade to CarPay is rumored to allow wireless connections instead of requiring the lightning cable. A possible new phone from Apple likely has no effect on CarPlay in non-carplay compatible cars.

The dealer information makes sense. Apple is very protective of releasing new products, Hardware or software. Hence no car has Carplay at this point that has been release to the public. IMHO they will release carplay in September when new IPhone is release. The car manufactures will release them soon after.
