  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

A few weeks ago I inadvertently left my rear door ajar overnight and my battery was too low the next morning to start engine. I called Bluelink to come over and jumpstart me and the car has been fine since. I spoke to one of my friends yesterday and he recommended I replace the battery since once it was down too low to start the car it would never be the same. Any opinions??? I know if you discharge a starting battery frequently you can damage the plates but once for a few hours?

Thx

Get some new friends - the advice is pure nonsense.

Also, a new battery - for my genny - is something like $400.

P.s. you don't say what kind of batt. you have - but even for the old lead/acid batt's, it is certainly not desirable to completely discharge them - you get a deep cycle battery for that. But, nobody would throw a battery away for a one-time discharge - unless, of course, you got other problems - like maybe the battery was shot in the first place and this is the real reason your car wouldn't start.

If you are driving a 2015, the battery is still under free replacement warranty if it has further problems.

Repeated deep discharge kills these AGM batteries. I would highly recommend you check your owner's manual which should have very specific instructions on the best way to bring the battery back up to peak.

In most cases a very slow charge is recommended, but it varies. One deep discharge just aged your battery, but it certainly did not kill it.

Your friend is wrong; kn5owa is correct.

I love this forum.

Driving a 2015 Gen 3.8 HTRAC Signature. Thank you all for advice.
I'll forgive my friend this time.

One deep cycle is not as bad as the heat and vibration.

There are batteries designed for deep cycle, mainly for marine (electric trolling motor), golf cart and solar cell power storage. I wouldn't sweat it.

Happened to my 09 Genesis but I left the trunk open. My question is this. I have a 2003 Ford Excursion 6.0. I have had truck since new. This 12+ year old beast has a neat feature that shuts everything off (ie dome lights leaving a door ajar running lights) after a certain amount of time with no action. My 09 Gen didn't have it and I would guess the 15 Gen does not either. I had to replace battery in 09 but it was original 7 year old battery and I just thin it was time.

The Genesis shuts things down if the door is open for too long. I had this issue when I added mt auto sunshade and auto heat/cool seats. I did put the car on a trickle charger, just in case.

Glad to hear the auto-shutdown works for everything on the Genesis. I thouhgt I read that it did in the owner's manual.

You saved me from looking it up again.

Handy feature.

BTW, my comment on following up on the battery still holds. I just brought an old AGM gel battery back from the near-dead this after it was removed from a wrecked Mazda MX-5 and discharged over time. Little SOB's are built right. It actually lost charge after the last manual cycle I put it through and then regained the "lost charge" and more. It is back to normal levels. Gonna make a monster UPS.

Page 3-114 - When the ignition is shut off - the lights will go off.

Like everything else in the manual - the explanation is complex and full of conditions (and hard to find) - but the basic idea is set forth there.

Just like my Sonata

I thought there was a time-out feature in these cars. Aren't the lights supposed to go out after 20 minutes if the car is left unattended and not running?
See my post above - you're basically right - there are timeouts - and like everything else on the Genny - it's complex. But, everything will be off after 5 mins. at most.

Again - note P. 3-114 of the manual -- I have a word searchable pdf copy of the manual on my computer for looking up this sort of thing.

Ok, then why did his battery die? Shouldn't the system shut down and not leave his light on overnight?

The man said he left the rear door open - maybe the shutdown routine didn't compensate for an open rear door - i.e., a loophole in the system, maybe.

I left doors open and the lights shut off. it was not a rear door, but a front door

I just bought a new 2015 Genesis a few months ago. My car has just a little over 2,000 on it. A week ago I went to start my car and it would not start. It was clicking like it wanted to, but no luck. I had to call roadside assistance. They came out and said the battery was registering at 0. They jumped it and told me to drive it myself to the dealership. I did and by the time I got there the battery was charged. They put the car on a machine and tried to find out why it happened. No luck, so they sent me home. For 5 days I had no problem. It started right up. On the 6th day, the same thing happened, only this time it would not even turn over. In fact, it even locked itself. (My husband said he did not lock it himself.) Roadside assistance was called one more time and this time they had to tow it. When it got to the dealership, it was again on 0 battery. They had to jump it in order to even unlock it. Again it goes on the machine to see what is wrong and again no problem shows up. They have had it now for 4 days and still have not figured out the problem. The battery is charged and they can not duplicate the problem. They are telling me they have called someone to help them with the problem, yet they still have the car with no answers. Anyone had a similar situation?

What you are describing sounds like an intermittent internal short in the battery. The symptom is that the battery went from near 0 charge to full charge in a single local drive, if I understood your description. A battery cannot charge that quickly, ever. It seems odd that that would happen. I have not seen a short like that in decades; heat changes usually make the problem occur. Good luck with it.

👆👍 my 2012 when new had the same problem. It had been sitting around most of the time on the lot. Being moved in the lot and shut off. After I purchased the car, soon the battery came up dead. Then charged and showed a fake reading of good when put under load. Happened again.. Dealer put a new battery in no questions asked. Never had any problems since. I bet once they replace the battery with brand new out of the box, may solve the problem.

On a side note. Past couple days when in garage, not inside the 2015, FOB inside house, the Bluetooth on my iPhone attached to the 2015 while the 2015 was "off". Never saw that before. If correct, that means the Bluetooth for some reason is active when car is off. That will cause a drain in the battery.

I had a similar issue with a battery in my Honda years ago. Replaced the battery and no more issues. I recommend they install a new battery then you monitor it from then on and if the issue arises again, they will know it is something between the battery and the ignition.

I just had the EXACT same thing happen last Friday! Car was parked overnight in my garage. Nothing left on, no open doors, etc. Got in the next morning and everything COMPLETELY dead. No lit dash, nothing, zero. Connected my "smart" battery charger directly to the battery and it would charge for about 90 seconds, and then stop, with the message "internal short in battery" on the display. So, I jump-started her with my van, and took her for a 30 mile drive. Pulled back in the garage and turned the car off. Started right back up no problem. I was scratching my head as to how it could charge back that much on such a short drive from being completely dead. That evening I put the battery on a 1amp motorcycle trickle charger and left it on for 10 hours. No problems since, but it makes me worry about if/when it happens again. It was awfully convenient to happen in my garage on a weekend the first time. And I'd hate for it to happen to my wife when she's out on her own. Not sure what to do going forward. Can't prove anything to the dealer as it's working perfectly for now.... any thoughts? Takes away that confident feeling in your vehicle!

Maybe this is one of the little side benefits of having agm batteries.

Also, the charging instructions in the manual are truly weird - maybe this why.
