  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Beware dark chrome issues

My 2020 Sport has this issue around the windows as well. When I mentioned it to my dealer, they claim it was due a protective film being left on too long and baking in the sun - gotta love South Florida. I was given the canned response of "We have a compound to restore it, but if it doesn't work we can order replacements." They were kind enough to offer a full detail for the trouble at least!

I have had the compound treatment done to my G70. It works until you get close to the paint where I guess they dare not go... so the oxidation or whatever you want to call it exists as a thin line at the bottom the trim. The dealer said basically they will do this procedure every time I bring the car in, until they get tired enough to order new trim. The front grill and trim which is also smoked, does not have this problem.

Chrome on the front bumper? Not sure my G70 has that? There is a front grill that has the dark chrome around the grill periphery If that is what your talking about? If not elaborate more where on the bumper your at? I only use my quick detailer sprayed on a micro towel to clean my tinted chrome areas and so far have not had and staining or issues. I think whatever coating is on top of the trim pieces is a POS and very fragile.

should have elaborated a little bit! It’s the dark chrome accents around I guess you would can the air ducts under the front lights.. possibly a technical name for those.

Yea I didn’t pay much attention when picking up the car but the window trim is way lighter than the rest of the dark chrome around the car. So I assume they were cleaned multiple times and it dulled the color. That’s what I’m confused about as the window trim has wear spot like it was buffed down to base chrome but the front air vents air peeling away. Anyone had the peeling issues?? Attached is pictures of the peeling on both sides.

Mine had turned to this gummy, sticky mess. I just took it completely off. Thinking about removing all of the dark chrome as I'm starting to get spotting on the grill.

My dealership said the compound used to buff the chrome “etching” marks is called 3M Perfect-It Rubbing Compound. Maybe someone can second this as I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere. The car will be delivered back to me (I bought it out of town so they came in and picked it up) next week so well see how it looks. Curious being a cutting compound how that effects the look if any. (Btw they claim the issue is hard water related, possibly due to washing the car after it sat in the sun. Who knows..)

I can tell you right now how it will look, it will look chrome. Not dark chrome that we paid for, but shiny chrome. No one should accept this. This issue is widespread, and needs to be addressed by Genesis, either by a better dark chrome finish, or black trim pieces. I hate shiny chrome!

the dealer said that the window chrome isn’t dark chrome? I don’t see why they would mis match dark and regular. I’m curious if they just want out of replacing. Can someone confirm the window trim is dark chrome like the rest of the car?? Mine was already lighter when I picked it up..

Mine all matches. Door handle, window trim, front grill trim, trim below rear bumper, all have the same tint/dark like finish. Not shiny chrome. I think whomever makes these parts for Genesis over-coats normal chrome finish with a tint of sorts. Certain water that spots, stains or etches easily can create spots on this finish. You use an abrasive cleaner the tint can get removed leaving only shiny chrome. My theory anyway.

That's a load of crap! It should all match, and it should all be dark chrome.

Does Genesis call it dark Chrome or smoked chrome?

Called Genesis directly today in regards to my issue. They were exceptional in working with me. They established a claim and contacted the dealership I’m working with directly. So if I get my car back and it’s not correct there’s an open ticket to call them and they will fix the issue. For my trouble the young lady said to watch my email for a nice surprise! All things are yet to be seen but so far so good. If your having trouble go the extra mile and contact Genesis directly. Every time Iv called they have been more then open to working with me.

Over in the G80 section, folks are experiencing premature peeling of the dark film which is overlayed on to the chrome trim for the sport models. I hope we dont experience the same thing, but it looks to be the same design. Something to keep an eye on. I was hoping that the dark chrome was the base color of the material, but its apparently just a tint coat applied over the base chrome.
I'm having the same issue on my new G70 Sport. I thought that it looked oxidized or had a protective film. But apparently not! I've got a valet appointment coming up so this info will be helpful.

I had the same issue with my 2020 G70 with the sport package.. I got it in August. I noticed all the window trim seemed to be stained or tarnished in some way. The dealer tried to buff it out with some kind of compound but it did absolutely nothing, So they ordered all new window trim. It took two months for the parts to come in but they replaced all the tarnished trim with new trim and now it looks great. I was told that it took so long because the parts had to come from Korea and all parts shipments were taking longer do to the global pandemic.

I am having the same issue with my 2019 G70 3.3t Sport. I have had it for 15 and 1/2 months, the unique issue with mine is that I had the car lifetime ceramic coated with Ceramic Pro 3 days after I purchased it. I noticed a few times while washing it, by hand always that the dark chrome around the windows was looking like it had been out in the sun for about 10 years. It was due for its aftercare 1 year ceramic coat follow up and I was talking with the detailer telling him that the ceramic coating may be failing. He was like nope, that is an issue with the chrome. Reached out to the dealer as I needed to have the sun roof noise fixed, and they stated the same. We have a compound and will try to rub it out, if not we will order replacement parts. Not happy this is happening, also feel that the dealer should pay to have the ceramic coating placed back on the new parts.

I will keep you posted if the rub out works or if new parts were needed and how the dealer resolved this for me.

I have an early build, here is what the dark chrome issues can look like on the window trim. I'll be asking for these to be replaced next oil change service. I have this on all four of the window trim only, nowhere else.
I have the same issue with my 19'. Dealer says it's water spots and needs buffing. I call Bullshit! Just spent 1/2 hour buffing one section and looks like I'm peeling a coating up.

The dealer, or Genesis, doesn't owe you ceramic coating, they owe you new trim. It's unreasonable to think otherwise.

Any buffing will the dark coating. The only fix is replacement.
