Beware dark chrome issues

I too had issues on mine as soon as I picked up my 2022 LE. I've had the car for three months and its doing it again. I just chrome deleted everything. I think it looks way better black gloss, plus it matches the other piano black gloss trim.

Question for you: what paint issues did you have? Care to elaborate?

Thx!

My LE is Verbier White. When I took delivery of it I noticed tiny chips in the paint, mostly along the passenger side. Very tiny, about the size a dull pencil would leave. But I pointed them out and my dealer said they would take care of it. They gave me a loaner, and they brought my car back a few days later. Except only a few of the spots were taken care of, mostly along the roof on the passenger side. It was raining, but I could see all the ones they missed. There were numerous others that were not fixed. So off it goes again. I was disappointed, but at least my dealer was going to make it right.

A few more days go by and they bring my car back. Well, they fixed most of the spots....except EVERY spot they "fixed" was glossy!! Doesn't look well next to all that matte paint! So I'm pretty sad now that my paint is ruined. On top of the fact that it was supposedly looked over from head to toe and there were still small chips. So this has me seriously questioning if there is an issue with the paint. I can understand debris chipping the paint, but it shouldn't chip from me looking too hard at it!

Anyway, the dealer offered me two choices. They could bring it to their body shop an hour away, which has a lot of experience with matte paint. They will look at it, and fix it or respray the whole car if they determine the paint is bad. Or, they would transfer another LE from another dealer and swap mine out. No cost to me in either situation. Both options show me my dealer is very serious about making me happy. I appreciate that. Now I'm not sure which option to take. I have not heard of any other LE having paint issues, so if it is not a widespread issue then the swap makes sense to me. Either way, it has been stressful. I am afraid to drive it too much until I make a decision. But I bought this car to DRIVE IT.

That is my experience so far. Hopefully, this gets resolved and I can get back to driving her...

Thanks for the detailed reply.

I'm sorry you've had a rough experience thus far. If it gives you a little comfort, mine has also been very rocky from the start.

My first issue was my red leather seats. Really bad creasing on the bottom and the bolsters, and only with 29 miles on the car. They've ordered me two replacements, but have yet to be installed. That was my first issue.

Then came the smoked chrome hazing/flaking. So, after having the car for a few weeks I took it back in to have that looked at/repaired. They gave me a loaner. They had my car for 3 weeks total that time. Went to finally pick my car up, and noticed immediately that there were several scratches to my satin paint (I know they say it's matte, but it's really just satin) from where they removed the door trim, etc. I knew this was going to be an issue as soon as I saw it. Once you scratch satin/matte paint, the entire area must be repainted. And even then there is a very good chance it won't match. Furthermore, I then noticed several areas that looked glossy near the trim. They basically scratched the paint multiple times and then just blended/buffed the areas. Which are now glossy. We all know you can't buff satin/matte paint. These dummies thought you could I guess, or they thought I wouldn't notice. Unfortunately for them I notice everything. Every flaw, etc. It's a gift and a curse.

So, I now have a car that the dealership damaged and I'm kinds stuck. Bottom line, Genesis isn't equipped to handle a high maintenance paint such as satin/matte. This is where not having a dedicated dealership for Genesis really hurts. Instead you have Hyundai techs working on cars that are double in value. Just a really bad move on their part.

I'm stuck and I'm not sure what to do. That's why I wanted to hear what issues you were having. I thought they maybe had a solution to fix your paint that I could share with my local dealer. I'm now afraid to even bring my car back to the dealer to have any work done in the future. The techs there clearly don't care, nor does the local Tampa GM. He's been no help. I'm getting corporate involved now. The service manager has been very helpful, but he just quit two weeks ago. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Genesis didn't think longterm about the satin/matte paint issues. You can clearly see that with both of our issues.

If I were you, I'd absolutely have them get you a new car immediately. I've been to some local guys here in Tampa that paint $200k exotics, and they wouldn't touch my car. They said matching the paint would be impossible. I went to three different shops. They all immediately were Iike "nope!". Have them locate you a new car before it's too late.

How many miles do you have on yours?

I'll say this, this will be my last Genesis. If this happened at Audi, BMW or a Merc dealership, this would've been completely taken care of. After this lease, I'll go back to the Germans. Genesis isn't ready for the higher-end customer. Sad, but true. Leason learned.

Ugh. I hate to hear this. I am hoping for all of us that corporate makes this right for you. It would go a long way in earning people's trust if they stand by their brand. They really need their own dealerships, I agree. While the work on my car has been lacking, the staff have been really good to deal with so far. However, my experience seems to be the exception instead of the rule.

I have 340 miles on my car. I have noticed some creasing on my bottom seat as well. My bolsters seem fine...for now. I have been meaning to talk to the dealer about this, as this has been mentioned by others (just like the chrome trim!).

As for my paint, the color match was halfway decent but the gloss on it is unacceptable. I was already leaning toward the new car, so I am probably going to have them grab one before it is unavailable.

Best of luck with yours. I really hope you get taken care of.

Same to you!

I was told the red leather is much more susceptible to creasing due to the dye. Apparently many are having this issue.

Again, another quality issue. If Genesis wants to be taken seriously, they must fix and address these issues. It's ridiculous at this point.

Let me know what you end up doing. Snag another car soon if you can. I think these are mostly accounted for and sold out. Sounds like your dealer is taking much better care of you. Courtesy Genesis of Tampa is an absolute joke.

I bought my 2019 3.3T Dynamic a couple of months ago. Got a great deal on a "used" car with only 86 miles on it - $15k discount! A couple of days after getting it home, I pulled it out of the garage to do the first detail and noticed that all of the trim around the windows had this sticky coating. First thought was they had left the shipping protection film on the trim as the car sat for months in the hot south Texas sun. After close inspection, it looked like the dark coating had broken down into this sticky mess. I suspect that this may have been the reason for the deep discount. I used some Goop Gone and a microfiber cloth to remove the mess. All of the trim is now chrome. Given the discussion here, I may contact the dealer to see if the trim can be replaced. Although if everyone is having issues with the replacement, I may opt to leave them as is. I also have spots on the front grill and the "boomerangs". The dark tint was a nice idea, but it looks like the implementation needs a bit more thought!

Any significant issues with paint fading on the red exterior paint?

Oh man... My one week old car also has some weird stuff going on over the trims

At first I thought it was some water marks, but i can't remove it.

I sent an email to the guy who sold me to see how should I proceed to have it fixed

Quick update on mine. Had my first service in October and informed about it. They had it in stock and changed it without question. It was at Genesis Laval, in Quebec CA

I've been having the same issue with the dark chrome looking terrible around all the window trim (for some reason the mirror and grille trim is fine). 2022 Seville Silver w/ about 14k on the clock. I've been thinking about it for a while, and had a bit of an epiphany today. So I broke out the Colgate and got these results w/ about 2 hours worth of elbow grease. It's still dark chrome, it didn't strip the dark layer.

Wow! Looks great! I just eliminated any possibility of that happening and deleted all the chrome minus the door handles. But this will be helpful for a lot of owners.

I actually just bought 3M gloss black vinyl to wrap the trim, but I decided to try this one last thing - and it worked!

Did this remove the coating down to the base? It looks shiny now. Will this last long term?

Not as far as I can tell. It's still dark chrome, I was able to strip off what seems to be some form of strong oxidation. The reason I went with toothpaste is because it includes a gentle abrasive and works with water. And it smells minty fresh. ;)

Edit - I'm not sure if it'll last, I'll update this thread if it comes back.

I have a few scratches on the "black" chrome trim around front headlight. Has anyone used a product to address an issue as this? Having minor repair to bumper cover which has to removed and shop is trying to find the black chrome piece so that both repairs can be made. If can not find part, may proceed with repair of cover and try to touch up the headlight surround.

Did it scratch all the through to the chrome underneath? I'd think you'd probably have to get the whole thing replaced.

Yes it is more than superficial and I have requested that shop find the part but if will take months, would just proceed with bumper cover repair. Hoping he gets back to me soon.

That's a bummer. Waiting months seems to be a common theme for anything.

Also need to correct. Not around headlight. The molding just below and to side of grill and above lower part of bumper cover. May be part #86571

Found the part on several sites....

So, I used the toothpaste method and my dark chrome definitely got lighter. My experience is completely different from yours. Am I upset about it? Absolutely not. The dark chrome was really starting to look awful and I wanted to do something about it. I was fully aware there was a chance this could happen but it was a risk I was willing to take. The trim piece around the grill has always looked lighter so now it will match all the way around the car.

I used the Colgate toothpaste, microfiber towels, and a spray bottle with water. Once I saw that it was definitely going to be lighter, I went to Harbor Freight and got some soft buffering/polishing wheels. Didn't want to get aggressive with it at all. Plenty of masking tape was used to protect the paint considering I've got the Launch Edition. I was able to get both passengers doors done before the rain set in. I'll tackle the driver's side tomorrow.

I would post pictures but for some reason I keep getting a message that "The uploaded file is too large for the server to process." I don't get it. I'm not aware that I changed anything
