  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Brake Fluid Recall!

For Genesis owners in Canada, it seems the dealers are totally uniformed about this Recall/TSB. At my last service a few weeks ago, they did a Brake Fluid Flush and reinstalled DOT-3 fluid. It was only after that service that I read here about the recall. The car had to go back for some warranty issues this week and I mentioned the recall to the service advisor. He said he had heard about it for the Equus but not the Genesis (even though they have the same braking system). They did the change to DOT-4 anyway so I assume they called Hyundai Canada to confirm.

Car scheduled this Saturday for Oil change and coolant flush - they can't do the TSB on Saturday's because their master tech(s) are not in. Guess I'm going to have to make 2 trips to the dealer this year;)

Had oil changed last week and got the fluid changed as well.

What is the root cause of this TSB, and the reported in this site of brake failures? Will dealers say why the fluid change?

Droping the car off tonight for oil change and brake TSB along with a few other things tomorrow.

Dealer says they will do the brake fluid swap when they do the winter rubber swap-out in a couple of weeks.

From my understanding, they are saying that the DOT 3 fluid in the car right now has too low of a boiling point to be used in such a big vehicle so they are changing it to DOT 4 to increase the boiling point and reduce brake fade risk and potential law suits really.

Too low a boiling point causes bubbles in the fluid, resulting in a very nasty pedal-to-the-floor form of excitement which may cause bubbles to form in your blood as your blood boils.

Re: Brake Fluid TSB!

Took my 2012 Genesis 3.6 in for 7500 mile service today -- they replaced brake fluid per recall bulletin. Svc guy said it was about condensation forming in current fluid. Interestingly, my copy of the service done noted "VI Equus Brake Fluid Replacement."

It's covered by warranty. No charge. Just had it done today. Svc Advisor said it would have cost about $134.
I had it done last week, and after I got it back brakes are noticeable softer (requires more pedal pressure). Not sure what that is about.

I suspect that's about some air in the system. Type 4 fluid should be no more compressible than type 3.

Will that work itself out over time, or should I have them bleed the brake lines?

I'd certainly have them redo it. Think about it, fluid gets hot, air expands, brakes get even softer.

Air expands, brake fluid does not. Take it back and get it fixed.

Problem is that I don't trust the service department at that dealer who did the work for the following reasons (as documented in another thread):
  1. The "apparently" didn't bleed the brakes correctly, so what makes me think they can do it right next time.
  2. I had an oil change done at the same time as the DOT-4 TSB. I left the oil to be used (Mobil 1 0W-30) in the trunk of the car and verified that it was noted by the service writer on the work order. I also put two identically worded stickers on the oil filler cap that said to use oil supplied by owner in the trunk (written with felt tip pen clearly written, albeit in English). But when I went to pay for the oil change, I mentioned to cashier that I should not be charged for the oil (oil was listed on invoice as a separate line item and the total for the oil change was $58) since I supplied the oil. The cashier went into the service area for about 5 minutes, then came out and said they did used my 5-quart jug, but did not need my 1/2 quart bottle and were returning it to me in my trunk (V6 uses 5.5 quarts for change), and they removed the charge for oil on my invoice. When I got home I noticed dipstick level was very high, so I doubted their story and decided to change the oil myself using Mobil 1 (as I had done every time previous). Sure enough, when I drained the crankcase, I got 6.25 quarts out, so there is no way they only used my 5-quart Mobil 1, and obviously used their own conventional oil and kept my Mobil 1 5-quart jug which they pulled from the trunk when I complained about the invoice.
Bottom line is that I will never take my car back to Ed Voyles Hyundai in Marietta GA (just outside of Atlanta) again, since they are not honest and not competent.

I am thinking about taking it to another dealer and pay to have brake lines bleed, but it is not so bad as the brake pedal hitting the floor or anything like that. It is just that it now takes more pressure on the pedal than before the DOT-4 TSB was done. So not sure if this is a real problem of air in the lines, or just characteristic of changing the fluid and maybe adjusting the brakes.

May I suggest you call your local BBB and give them the facts...At some point
the poor workmanship at the dealer may well put someones life at risk!
I would also contact the CEO of the dealership and voice your issues..In addition to Invoicing them to have the work done correctly...
I had a very poor experience at Merced CA VW/Kia/Hyundai...Although it was a VW that they pretty much butchered from day ONE of ownership..They cared not for anything but themselves..Eventually thro' the help of the BBB, VWOA exchanged the vehicle..........
I now use Central Valley Volkswagen/Hyundai..
Excellent customer service, first rate engineers/technicians..They Care..

  1. As far as the oil change fiasco is concerned, it is not worth my time any more to mess with it. I prefer to do my own oil changes anyway, and will do so from now on.
  2. Ed Voyles Hyundai is where I purchased my 2009 Genesis, and close to where I some have to be near for work (but only occasionally), but there are two other dealers who are closer to where I live. Besides, I don't trust their techs to bleed the brake lines right the second time if they could not do it right the first time. I don't think it is a major problem right now, but not 100% sure. I might call one of their service advisers and see what they say.
  3. Ed Voyles Hyundai sent me a link to a site where I filled out an online survey about my service experience, and I explained everything. So it will be interesting to see if they respond to what I documented in the survey (I explained both the oil change and the DOT-4 TSB problems).
  4. The problems I had with Ed Voyles Hyundai service do not rise to the level of me getting a new car to replace my 2009 (obivously).

I got my fluid changed today. The pedal feels a tiny bit softer. It does seem smoother now .

Done yesterday. Exact same impreesion/feel
