Brake Pedal Problem

I took my Genesis in for an oil & filter change this morning. I also asked them to check a possible problem with the brakes or brake pedal mechanism.

When I step on the brake pedal, as it nears the point where it would normally stop I hear a "pop" noise and feel it with my foot. This happens while stopping or even when sitting still when I depress the pedal.

The service tech took the car out for a drive and then checked the brake system for air in the lines. The service advisor (SA) reported back to me that they couldn't find a problem and that all was normal. I then said, if everything is normal then you wouldn't mind if a tested the brake pedal on another '15 Ultimate on the lot to see if it does it, too. We chatted a bit and I persuaded the SA to let the tech and me try it on another Genesis.

The tech pulled up in the new Genesis and asked me to sit in the passenger seat. I said I didn't need to do that, that I could tell if it was the same if he just stepped on the brake while I listened right there. I didn't hear it, so he took it for a drive around the block. I told him the Genesis we were driving wasn't doing it. He then let me drive it so I could see if it was "popping". It wasn't.

We then took my Genesis out for a drive again and before we even exited the service lane, it popped when I stepped on the brake and he heard it. I drove a few more feet and did it and it popped again. Then I pressed the brake pedal while we were just sitting there and it again popped. I then let him drive it and it popped every time he stepped on the brake.

I left the car with them and got a loaner. I got a call around 2:30 this afternoon that they will be replacing the whole brake pedal assembly and hope to have the part in by tomorrow, but it could be Friday.

Now I'm driving around in a new bare bones Sonata, for which they apologized, as they didn't have any Genesis loaners. I really missed my HUD, blind spot mirrors/warnings, and NAV with traffic display on the way home. It doesn't have power seats either.

I wasn't too surprised that the ST didn't initially find a problem as it was easy to explain to the SA and not everything I said got relayed to the ST. Once I directly explained to the ST what I was experiencing it became much easier for him to experience the issue.

The whole experience was actually positive as the service department did respond to my request and no one seemed stressed or insulted that I asked to check another car for the issue. Now, we'll see how it goes from here.

I got a call about 10:30 this morning saying the car was ready for me to pick it up. Looks like it didn't take as long as they thought to get the part.

The only explanation that I got concerning the brake pedal was that the tech tried lubricating and re-torquing all the nuts and bolts, but that didn't work, so they replaced the brake pedal assembly with a new on and all seems OK now.

They also bled the brake lines to make sure there weren't any problems there.

Brakes feel a lot better now, but I still keep expecting to feel and hear the "pop" noise. I wonder how long it will take for me to quit doing that.

The SA gave me the phone number for Hyundai US customer care if I wanted to discuss the replacement tires with them. I'm going to wait until I get the actual recall letter to see what it says and then see what I can do to get replacement that meet or have better specs than the Hankooks do. In my opinion people that took the V-rated Michelin Primacy MXM4s kind of caved as they were getting "Michelin" tires.

I had put the MXM4s on my MKZ. They were better than the Michelin Energy Saver A/S that were OEM, but not by much.
