  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Brought home the R-Spec!

c'mon boys !!!!! Be nice.

i was. invited him to my shop to say hey. funny how he hasn't reciprocated?? wonder why? maybe "hiding behind some screen name" in a secret location? lol.. cajones..right.

I did almost buy the 2011 4.6 but alas the ride wasn't right for me. Hence my intense curiosity in the 2012.

But when I do buy the car, if the ride is right for me, I won't be telling anybody about it here on this forum. Too bad there are Genesis owners who do Hyundai a disservice by creating an ugly impression on earnest seekers.

In my defense I have started a number of threads in the service of the community regarding how to negotiate and buy a Genesis.

can i get a "T" "R" "O" "L" "L"

yet you still hang around here?

T*U*N*E T*I*M*E Ta da. Tony packs boxes at Tune Time and is up to his neck in debt, pain, loneliness and angst with big hole within he can't fill. (Try google to look up the meanings of these polysyllabic words I use t-man box packer). Try and keep up dog I go fast and I pay cash for everything I have. Plus no debt. I got all day and I got the swag and sway. Saw your website and I know you're underfunded.

Nothing you will ever taste, touch, feel or own will bring you lasting peace and no matter how many people you abuse, you won't feel better about yourself.

Heavy huh? It's the truth. See I really am from Manhattan. Pulled myself up off the streets. Didn't grow up on Long Island and act like I'm from the Bronx like you, t-man.

You don't have to actually trade a vehicle in for the competitive rebate - you just need to provide proof of registration. I'm going to be keeping the pickup (a Ranger) for at least a little while - it's convenient to have around.

I'm not sure about whether or not I'm going to tint the windows - I think I was going to see how hot the seats got on a warm day and do a bit of research. When I picked it up on Monday, it was 111 degrees (no heat index or other bull$hit, actual 111) in Kansas City. Although it was warm in the car, it wasn't unbearable. I park in a garage for work and a garage at home (as soon as I get it decluttered, so right now I'm thinking I could get away with not tinting. We'll see - I'm open to suggestions for sure.

And as far as the price - I definitely recommend calling around to the small town dealers. Corwin Hyundai in Jeff City didn't have this posted on its website or anything - otherwise I think they would have had other offers. And lastly, my Circle Price was also for Think Tank.

Do you like the wheels? I didn't care for them in the marketing photos before the car came out. Do they look better in person to you? Never mind. I just saw you said you LOVE the wheels. Enjoy.

After much anticipation I drove an r-spec last week. It was a fine car with a lot to like but did not meet my expectations for a performance sedan.

My primary issues were: handling felt disconnected and not 'firm' enough for my tastes, at speed the transmission applies the power in such a manner that it makes the larger engine lifeless, navigation dial usage was clumsy, cooled seat on only drivers side only, poor sunroof that felt cheap (Sonata has nicer sunroof and screen), rims on the r-spec didn't appeal to me.

I drove the r-spec the better part of a day so I had ample opportunity test all aspects of the performance. I did like that at 70mph on flats its loafing along at just under 1800 rpm. It's really the corners/ramps and roundabouts where I have issues with the r-spec.

The car seems to be geared towards a luxury sedan more than a performance sedan which is not what I expected for something wearing an r-spec badge.

I am sure it's a perfect fit for a lot of folks but just not me. So if someone is looking for an r-spec, Butler Hyundai in Indianapolis has a black/black in stock.

I have to say that I don't get Hyundai's thinking with the R-spec badging. The natural thought is that it's meant to compete with other special badged cars like the Cadillac V, Mercedes AMG, and BMW M series, which of course it's not. It would've been much better to label it as an S or SE model, and reserve R-spec to mean something with real sporting pretensions.

What will they do when they come out with something that really is a sport package? Label it the R-spec-no-really-we-mean-it-this-time? :D

429 HP 5.1-5.2 0-60 running time is nothing to sneeze at. Especially min. $20K less than the base model competitiors in the sport category.
I wish Hyundai would've added the Brembos, paddle shifters and sporty front buckets (a second 19" wheel option) and priced R-Spec at $48995. Perhaps a work in progress awaiting the AWD.

I would respectfully disagree with a lot of what you mentioned above, CyclingClyde. First, as noted many times, the handling and feel is quite subjective and depends on the response you prefer. This is no 25k premium pricetag and we shouldn't expect it to handle like a 25k premium badge (despite the fact that R-Spec may imply more than it is).

I think your comment that the transmission wasn't responsive has little to do with the fact that the transmission can't be responsive or that the car doesn't have the power to be responsive. Although I don't personally know this to be true, I've see quite a few comments about the ability of the transmission to adapt to the style of the driver behind the wheel (and whether or not this is true, I've fully convinced myself that it is in 300 miles of driving). So - in response, I think the engine and the response of the car is quite responsive.

Regarding your concerns with the sunroof - I guess without more details on what felt cheap about it I can't respond. It fits snugly, is made of the same material as the headliner and feels every bit as well made to me. However, this may be due to my inexperience with other luxury models so I'm quite willing to defer to your opinion.

And lastly - I still love the wheels :)

Trotti - Having never driven my car yet (might arrive next week!) I cannot speak with any experience on the rspec yet. That said, I agree with you enough to have purchased one sight unseen. (For the record, I did drive a 2012). R-spec may have been an unfortunate choice in names but it does not invalidate the awesome features, power and luxury of this car for this price. Clearly not an M5 but equally clear that it does not cost 90K. On paper it looks to have 80-90% of the fun of an M5 for 50% of the cost.

Speaking of wheels - what is your (Trotti et al) opinion of a reasonable asking price for stock R-spec 19" wheel/tire package? They will have less than 10 miles on them.

Cheers,
Newman

Pulling out et al. - impressive.

Not sure what you could get for them - someone may have an interest in have a summer/winter set, but that would be far more expensive than just switching out the rubber for winter/summer each year.

eBay is the true arbiter of the value of all things.

I like you trotti. You have a beautiful car and probably the greatest value the car market has seen in decades. Good job!

Appreciate the feedback. Ebay was my thought as well - just need to determine reasonable reserve. I can always keep them myself for the same reason but in SoCal there is not much need for all-seasons.

newman! (I see Seinfeild's fat postman) so I live in Las Vegas and rarely travel through any snow or even very cold climates and I think I should only buy summer tires yet every car I've ever bought has come with all season tires. Leaving aside that riding sensation is subjective what is your experince with a summer tire ride. Is it much firmer than all season? Is there a sense that the vehicle has more traction? I can say that when I changed the tires of my 2010 from the Dunlaps to Michelin all seasons the ride was more comfortable but the new tires didn't corner as well...where the Dunlaps felt sharp the Michelins were mushy.

I tried to test drive an R-Spec last night but the car was in the showroom and they had no intention of moving it out. Additionally, they were offering it at $53k with a ~$5k adder for nitro, full tank, pin striping and market adjustment - are you kidding me! So I had no intention of starting negotiations here.

They appeared to have an attitude that the car will sell so no need to bother with me. I told them to call me when I can drive it. I was really shocked at how little attention they gave me. The salesman quickly realized that I knew my stuff so perhaps they realized there was no way to get a crazy price on this car, who knows.

In the meantime I may test a BMW M1 (not quite the same) and a Lexus.

I am quite concerned about the potential roughness of the R-Spec vs the others as noted in some reviews. I currently drive a highly modded '05 GTO set up with a track suspension and 650 hp. It is a blast to drive in FL and it will be my second car but I don't want to get another car that is overly rough.

Any thoughts on R-Spec ride vs the others is appreciated.

Unfortunately, there are still a bunch of dealers that just don't get it. Gouging customers never works in the long run.

On the other hand, they have typically been in business for a long time and they know it can work great in the short run. :( There are always a small number of "gotta have it" types for any car where demand outstrips supply.

They did this same crap (pinstripes, nitrogen, wheel well guards) on the lone 3.8 '12 Genny at my local dealer, and I told them if they do that to the R-Spec they've lost my business.

I'm not a big fan of the R-Spec wheels either, but I'm not buying another Genesis until next gen, so it's all subjective.

As for the ride discussions... *sigh* Personally I love the way my Genesis rides, but if I'm honest, it doesn't ride well over rough roads. As those generally aren't part of my driving experience, I have no complaints. I suspect that the R-Spec is probably the same.

no need to assume anything about the ride of the R-spec. Aquineas the car exist! You can simply test drive it. Having never driven an R-spec I could only guess about it's ride. I was in the markiet for a 3.8 so I test drove it. I was so pleased at the change from the previous year that I bought it. There is alot of "back and forth" here about the quality and character of the Genesis' ride however in this respect (wether the ride is significantly different) there is no need to guess.
