Buy a 2011 4.6 discounted or wait for a 2012?

I decided to buy the 11 4.6 for 36,240.00 plus 649.00 dealer prep in Orlando. It was too good to pas up
I think that was good choice. The roads in FL are sufficient smooth as to not worry about the suspension improvements in 2012 (and changing tires will help a lot on the 2011), and if you are buying (instead of leasing) the ZF transmission is a real plus IMO over the 1st year Hyundai 8-speed transmission for 2012 models. Same goes for the Aisin transmission used on 2011 V6 Genesis sedans (Aisin is 50% owned by Toyota and their RWD transmissions have been used in Lexus and other cars).

Finally heard back from one of the two dealers that I had submitted my lease request for (both dealers owned by the same party). Never heard back from the second dealer considering that we were just there one week ago today. Email response from the responding dealer stated that the numbers which I had provided looked good to the sales manager so come on in. After doing so and having them take my wife's Lexus IS300 off for an appraisal (never did get a figure for what they would have offered there) I was given a 3 yr/12K mile lease quote of $480+/mo. when I had made it clear that we were offering $431 and would be paying the taxes up front with the acquisition fee, etc.. I was told "we would be losing money on this deal". What I found interesting was that I had provided them a post from this site noting how they had sold the exact same vehicle in November of last year for the cap cost figure that I used, in addition to the current MF/residual rates which matched up with what they reportedly were using (they showed me the printout from Hyundai). Bottom line, no deal. For the life of me I can't figure out what the problem was. Unfortunately I received word while there that my dad was near death at the nursing home (still alive as of this moment) so that just made the day that much better. For whatever reason I guess it just wasn't meant to be and due to the experience I guess I'll let the wife look elsewhere. What a shame. We really do like the car but I'm not going to be ridiculous in what I give them.

Considering that I can walk in and with no negotiation get a V6 for $399/mo. I can't see what was wrong with the $431 offer.

sorry to hear that on both fronts.

What a timely thread (for me, at least). I'm one of the original Genesis owners, having bought an '09 V6 almost three years ago to the day (8/2/08), one of the first Genesis' that arrived in the US.

With just 55K miles on an extended 100K factory warranty, my plan was to drive this car into the ground (or at least until it was past 100K and starting to worry me), but my brother-in-law that's the GM of the dealership I bought from just e-mailed me with an offer that I'm struggling to resist. To wit:

Trade in my car and pay $13.5K + tax/lic for a demo '11 V8 Tech (black/cashmere) with 3400 miles on it. He'll prorate my extended warranty and tack it onto the new one. He'll even lend me the dough at 0.9%, although I'm a cash kind of guy at heart.

While I've been very content with my '09 V6, I must admit I would have bought a V8 if they had been available in the summer of '08, but I was desperate to get rid of an '02 530i that was burning oil like a Kuwaiti rig in '91. I've never been one of the original owners that was bummed out by the suspension (other than a few weird freeway stretches that prompt an unusual undulating wave that goes away as soon as the roadway improves), so I'm not particularly concerned about suspension improvements, etc., but I fully expect to benefit from whatever improvements that HMA has initiated three years after introducing this car to the US.

What this thread tells me is that there are no significant reasons not to consider this swap. Anyone inclined to talk me out of it given the financial parameters or other model year-related considerations?

BTW, good to see such a spirited list of threads underway here. As one of the original forum members, I haven't checked in very often lately, but it's good to see so much passion still in play for one of the best valued cars I've ever encountered. Unless someone here weighs in with something I've failed to consider, I think I'm about to own my second Genesis (and a V8 at last...might have to upgrade my Valentine detector!).

you can probably sell your car for about 26K. so I think you are paying about 40K for a 2011 demo with 3K miles on it.
take the car to carmax and see how much they will appraise it for.
If you are willing to go through the trouble of selling your old genesis yourself, you may be able to buy a 2012 V8 for the same price.

i would advise against the trade, mostly because i distrust demo cars. 3000 miles of abuse may cause problems later.
i recommend getting a new 2011 V8 or 2012 V8.

I am sorry to hear about your father. Let me share something with you.
My father passed last May. While he was in the hospital I was torn between purchasing the Lincoln MKZ or the Genesis. One day I looked out of his hospital bed room window and down below on the parking lot was a Hyundai Genesis, the more I saw it the more I liked it. Everyday I would gaze out the window and look at that Genesis as the owner must have worked at the hospital as the car was parked and left at the same time each day. When my father passed after spending a week in the hospital, I returned home and purchased the Genesis so this car is special to me in more ways than one.

I understand your sentiment and I'm thinking about just that. I'm partial to cars with an odometer reading of zero just because I tend to drive cars 'til they're old and I like to know where every mile came from. On the other hand, the dealer is family and he tends to control where his demos go (it's a largely rural area that sells way more Sonatas than Genesis). Worst-case, there's always the 100K warranty to level the playing field, I'm thinkin'.

But all that said, I'm looking for contrarian viewpoints, so keep 'em coming.

To drvinhle, is $39.5K an unreasonable amount to pay for a demo with 3.4K on it (notwithstanding the uncertainty about how arduous some of those miles were)? It's not a rhetorical question...I'm just out-of-touch re: Genesis pricing these days...

first of all, I wouldn't worry if it were a demo, 3K miles is nothing. The dealer still sells this as a new car, so you have a full 5 years/56K miles in case something is wrong. if something breaks 5 years from now, it's not going to be because of the abuse during the first 3000 miles.
39K for a demo is too much in my opinion. if you look around, a new 2011 can be had for around 38K, even a 2012 at that. I wouldn't pay more than $36000 for this demo.
I got mine as a dealer demo as well for $32000 in northern california. it had 7K miles on it. it basically was a new car. for the money I saved, I bought an extended 10yr warranty for $1300, but I ended up canceling it because, I liked the Genesis so much that I am already thinking about getting a new one in 3 years.

fitzmall:
2011 V8, new $37.8K
2012 V8, new $39K+

also, I was curious so I brought my 2 month old '11 V8 to carmax for an appraisal with 9K miles on it.
they were willing to buy it for $33K (paid $32K so I had a really good deal, don't use how much I paid to compare against yours, but I think $36K is reasonable, $39K is too much, may as well buy new)

I could've bought a 2011 4.6 for 37,500 in 11/10. So I'd expect you could pick one up for even less now.

i agree that the price should be lower, but i disagree about those demo miles.
at least in my area, most test drives are around 5 miles, which means the engine is still cold. during this time, people usually floor the throttle, often redlining the engine, then they have to brake pretty hard. all this puts a lot of stress on the drivetrain and brakes. the car basically spent 3000 miles doing this over and over, and i really don't think this is good for the car.

demos with this many miles on it are usually executive demos. meaning the car is driven by the dealer's managers as a perk/advertising purposes. Sure they may not baby it as their own, but I don't think they abuse it either. they usually don't just pick a car and use it for test drive purposes only. from my experience test driving cars, I pick the one that I like and ask to test drive it.

That turned out to be the case. All 3340 miles were put on by my brother-in-law (the dealership's GM), who drives like an old lady (in fact, I think he's "trained" the transmission to be sleepy...this car will realize how many ponies are under the hood after I tromp down on the accelerator for a few thousand miles!).

I've only put 40 miles on it so far, but the difference between the V6 and the V8 is more significant than I expected. I'm also gonna appreciate the cashmere interior over the black one I gave up. Other than that, there's just a few new features to read up on (adaptive cruise control, auto brake). I was pleased to see that new models will download one's cell phone directory, something that the original buyers lamented back in the early days.

Vroom, vroom...see ya!

my personal experience buying demos was as follows. 1st one was a 2004 envoy XUV (with the retractable roof that turned it into a pickup/avalanche of sorts. got that one with 3300mi on it. was almost new except for a cigarette burn mark i found while cleaning the rear carpet area two weeks after purchase (was under the mat but still??) that was a lease so i didn't care. Truck performed flawlessly for 36months. 2nd one was a 2009 Tahoe LTZ white with black interior. that truck was just straight abused. it had wear on the interior like a 5 year old car. got that one with 5k on it. needless to say, because it wasn't a lease that one lasted all of 6 months before it was 86'd lol.. I will not buy anymore demos, since i found the websites that show the holdback/adv fees, i know what i am willing to pay, no need to pickup a demo ;)

just my $.02

I, too, would be reluctant/unwilling to buy a car that had been driven by unknown people. Happily, that's not an issue with the demo I just bought, as I know exactly who put on every mile and he is uber-conservative. He rarely even hits the speed limit (!) and never accelerates unreasonably. The demo status of my new car is a non-issue.

i think you will be fine with that car.
btw, how much did you pay for it?
i'm thinking about getting a 2011 also.

I ended up paying $11K plus the trade-in of my '09 V6 with 55K miles on it. An extended warranty to 120K miles is part of the deal. Even though I hate car payments, they offered a 0.9% HMA loan, so I took it and may let it ride (damn cheap money).

I've only put ~200 miles on it so far, but I'm very happy. The V8 is a joy, the new features are fun, I prefer the cashmere interior to black, and the suspension does seem more stable than the '09. My only complaint is I'm back to the frickin' Dunlops, but my first set wore out so soon that I'll likely put on something better before too long. And to my surprise, I couldn't find any rear wing badges at Korean Auto Imports. What gives with THAT?

Hey guys...

Getting real bummed out here waiting for the 2012 v8's to arrive here in Seattle. Im ready to trade and move up, but it seems that HMA is slow in delivering here to the PNW. I know they will get here... :)

I was told an R Spec is on the way but the dealer is not talking.. ugh

Teasip-find another dealer. I paid 38k for a 2010 new in 2010. Your dealer is just trying to make too much money on the lease.
